A week’s worth of dinners at cut-rate prices
MONDAY
Blue Plate Special
Our favourite dish from the Drake Hotel’s lineup of comfort food is the house-smoked ribs—ancho-marinated, finger-lickingly good racks—with sweet pea mac-and-cheese (smothered in cheddar, blue, parmesan and goat cheese). $16.95. 1150 Queen St. W., 416-531-5042.
TUESDAY
Tapas Tuesday
Diners now have the opportunity to try Amuse Bouche’s masterful fare—pan-seared rainbow trout with braised cabbage, or local elk with mushroom fricassee and truffle jus—for just $10. French and Niagara wines are just $5 a glass. 96 Tecumseth St., 416‑913-5830.
WEDNESDAY
Lobsterlicious
Scaramouche reprises last year’s wildly popular lobster-centric menu. Fresh Nova Scotia crustaceans star in such dishes as classic bisque and whole poached lobster served with bacon butter. At $60, it’s a terrific deal at one of the city’s best restaurants. 1 Benvenuto Pl., 416-961-8011.
THURSDAY
TV tray night
Instead of rubbery salisbury steak, Grace Upstairs chef Dustin Gallagher serves roasted turkey, ham or beef with such traditional accompaniments as smashed potatoes, green beans and apple crumble. Dinner is served on TV trays, and old-school sitcoms provide meat-and-potatoes-era entertainment. $20. 503 College St., 416-944-8884.
FRIDAY
Budget Gourmet
Tasting menu master Susur Lee’s prix-fixe at Madeline’s features uncharacteristically hearty bistro dishes. A typical meal starts with romano bean and duck confit soup, followed by black pepper pappardelle loaded with slow-braised beef and garlic mushrooms. For dessert: devil’s chocolate cake
with peach-almond panna cotta and apricot purée. $35. 601 King St. W.,
416-603-2205.
SATURDAY
Laissez-faire
In the quiet pre-dinner hours, Union owner-chef Teo Paul hosts relaxed, salon-style afternoons of raw oysters, charcuterie and champagne. Paul’s fashionable friends often stop by, making it a great opportunity to slurp seafood with restaurant cognoscenti. $10–$15. 72 Ossington Ave., 416-850‑0093.
SUNDAY
Pierogi Night in Canada
Once a week, the communal table at Oddfellows fills with locals gleefully gathered for an all-you-can-eat pierogi buffet ($15), such house-made fixings as applesauce and bacon, and $3 vodka shots. 936 Queen St. W., 416-534-5244.
