Cheap Shots

If your finances don't make par, here are the three great courses under $70

Don Valley Golf Course
Now in its 51st year, Don Valley may be the best money the City of Toronto has ever spent (but you won’t have to spend much). The municipal layout, which plays host to more than 30,000 rounds each year, is beside the York Mills subway stop and runs underneath the 401. But veteran golfers ignore the background buzz and concentrate on the course, especially holes 12 to 14, a no-nonsense trio dotted with water and unforgiving trees.

Oliver’s Nest Golf Club
Located 90 minutes northeast of the downtown core, near Lindsay, Oliver’s Nest is a good getaway for cash-strapped city slickers (Monday and Tuesday rounds cost less than $50, including cart). And the scenery is as pleasing as the prices: designed by Graham Cooke, one of the country’s top golf architects, the course is bisected by Mariposa Brook; holes bend around water or thick cedar groves.

Settlers’ Ghost Golf Club
Opened in 2004, this Barrie-area course has a beautiful layout with views of rolling farmland and Blue Mountain, and the odd glimpse of Georgian Bay. Though it plays just 6,311 yards from the back tees, the holes feature dramatic changes in elevation and clever doglegs that challenge the big bombers.
