Beginning with his legendary shot of Winston Churchill in the House of Commons during World War II, the celebrated Canadian portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh captured the intimate, idiosyncratic sides of some of the 20th century’s greatest icons. Here, a look at what it took to get the most out of four famous subjects.

WINSTON CHURCHILL, 1941
The British prime minister, in Ottawa for a meeting, was led unawares into the Speaker’s Chamber, where Karsh snatched Winnie’s cigar from his mouth before shooting him, effectively immortalizing his defiant scowl.
