Camros Organic Eatery

An oasis amidst the madness of Yonge and Bloor offers a fresh and flexible menu of Persian dishes By Catherine Hayday


The place: Camros Organic Eatery is a Persian vegetarian retreat almost incongruously nestled in the bustle of Yonge and Bloor. The freshness-boosting restaurant recently expanded from 12 seats to 30 and has been designed to let in as much natural light as possible. With IKEA-style tables and chairs, it exudes the beech-finished minimalism of a yoga studio.

The crowd: Tucked away but always full, Camros attracts an odd mix of cubicle escapees from the Manulife Centre and the sort of high-end hippies who would voluntarily drink a shot of wheat grass.

The deal: Camros allows customers to construct two-, three- or four-item dishes from a set of daily selections. Prices for the combos vary somewhat depending on the seasonal cost of produce, but they stay between $7 and $13.

The dish: As advertised, Camros’s lunch is lightly spicy and completely wholesome. Kale in tahini sauce is a popular choice: the chef succeeds in making the trickiest of leafy greens not just palatable, but refreshing and crisp. Ghormeh sabzi, a traditional Persian stew of red kidney beans, gives a good hit of soft, savoury protein—a counterpoint to the crunchy beet and carrot slaw. The colourful rice balls (red, green or golden) are spheres of goodness: brown rice stuffed with raisins and prunes, or beets and lentils. All are flavourful, richly textured and filling.

The time: 33 minutes. Many people get their orders to go (in 100 per cent biodegradable takeout containers, of course).

The cost: $15.03 (including tax, tip, four-item combo and cashew juice).
