Yorkville

The city’s reigning pocket of posh is, like many of its denizens, in the midst of a serious facelift. Seven fashionable roads to financial ruin in Yorkville By Olivia Stren

1. Lindsay Perry Shoes
Those lamenting the city’s dearth of stylish shoes should check out Perry’s fetching collection. The Toronto designer (whose factories are in Italy’s Porto San Giorgio) sold her soles to Nordstrom and Anthropologie before opening shop in Hazelton Lanes. This spring: ballet flats in shades of red and black, gold-leaf organza wedges, Swarovski-adorned silk formal heels, as well as shoes and bags from London Sole, Lulu Guinness and Adrienne Vittadini. 55 Avenue Rd., 416-964-6000.

2. Spice Room
Chef Greg Couillard’s sexy 40-seater in Hazelton Lanes takes inspiration from the sensuous fire-licked flavours of Lamu, Zanzibar and Mombasa. His curries, lobster pakoras and spice-rubbed fish make continental cuisine seem like a painfully bland waste of calories. Decor is fittingly piquante, with walls washed in shades of gold, royal blue and saffron, and curtains the vibrant hues of African headdresses. 55 Avenue Rd., 416-935-0000.

3. Zola Shoes
Zola’s second location threatens to tip the scales on the my-mortgage-for-a-shoe debate. From Sigerson Morrison: cherry red patent wedges make Dorothy’s footwear seem lacklustre, and green patent ballerinas are as pretty as a pair of snow peas. Kitten heels from Pollini come in sunshine yellow, while the bejewelled and beaded Grecian-style flats from Miss Trish of Capri are goddess-chic. 45 Avenue Rd., 416-922-8688.

4. George C. Toronto
The latest issue from George and Lisa Corbo (formerly of Corbo and Corbo Studio) is the sort of luxe shop you’d find on Milan’s Via Montenapoleone. Almost everything is made in Italy, including croc, ostrich and snakeskin shoes from Rocco P., sandals from Etro and gold snakeskin handbags from Zagliani. While the attention is on mod, urban tailoring, not everything seems fit for a life of light-lunching and La Scala. Striped sundresses from Poleci, weightless as a Riviera breeze, are better suited to lazy days on the Med. 21 Hazelton Ave., 416-962‑1991.

5. White
The exclusive carrier of Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta, and Carole Tannenbaum’s vintage wedding jewels, this decadently appointed bridal shop offers a tasteful selection of everything beaded, embroidered and lace-trimmed. Jenny Packham’s slinky deco-style, silk-chiffon sheaths are stunners, while seersucker frocks are perfect for barefoot-in-Fiji-style nups. TIP: The third floor, dubbed the “bridesmaid loft,” can be rented for private shopping and champagne swigging. 19 Hazelton Ave., 416-849-9196.

6. Crepes a GoGo
Georges Brassens’ poetic strains play gently in the background as French-speaking regulars wash down crêpes with a taste of champagne. Owner Véronique Perez’s cozy, sun-filled crêperie (the place used to claim cramped quarters on Bedford Road) serves up a savoury selection of the French indulgence—each one lovingly prepared on the spot. 18 Yorkville Ave., 416-922-6765.

7. Finn
The fresh, whitewashed boutique—its moniker in tribute to owner Amalie Bruun’s heritage—is the neighbourhood’s cutest newcomer. (Hollywood darling Rachel Bilson recently popped in for a purchase.) Missoni home accoutrements (including poufs, pillows, and luscious towels destined to be unfurled on some private Sardinian beach) share shelf space with adorable frocks from Tocca, fluid dresses from L.A. designer Jesse Kamm (in soothing shades of cream and burlap), and ruby red handmade pillows embroidered with hearts and birds, from Toronto designer Pomona. 1 Yorkville Ave., 416-961-0101.
