A gas explosion prompts heated debate

August 10, 2008. 3:40 a.m. People who were there say the blast at Sunrise Propane near Keele and Wilson—which jolted terrified residents from their beds and melted parked cars in seconds—felt like a nuclear explosion. Now that the dust (never mind the asbestos) has settled, those involved have begun playing the blame game: Why was so much gas stored so close to a residential neighbourhood? Who was in charge of inspections? Could the city have done anything to prevent it? In the days following the disaster, residents banded together to demand answers from their politicians, and numerous class action lawsuits are already in the works. Meanwhile, with 17 other licensed propane facilities in the GTA, this is one fire that may prove tough to put out.
