Brick St. Bakery
If you’re tired of pre-made chicken salad, try the Coronation chicken sandwich ($7) at this Distillery District bakery; it combines fresh-roasted meat with chopped apple, almonds, apricot and curried mayo, served on organic house-baked bread. The grilled vegetable sandwich—with roasted portobellos, zucchini, red peppers, red onion and English stilton—will put a little colour in any vegetarian’s cheeks. And the braised spring lamb sammy ($7.50), made from big chunks of lamb, chili-spiked apricot dressing and tangy mayo, is irresistible.

California Sandwiches
With apologies to PETA, the veal and peppers sammy at California Sandwiches—a Little Italy institution—is hot, rich and divine. 244 Claremont St., 416-603-3317; plus seven other locations.

Carousel Bakery
Breakfast on a bun from Carousel Bakery (Saturday mornings only, $4.35) is one of Hogtown’s great comfort foods. Comprising two thick slices of peameal bacon, a fried egg and cheddar cheese on a pillow-soft bun, it’s a guilty pleasure.

The Fish Store & Sandwiches
In this sliver of a shop, sandwiches are made from ultra-fresh fish housed in an iced display case. Customers choose from wild salmon, halibut fillets, yellowfin, black cod, lobster, scallops and soft-shell crab. After you place your order, the fish is grilled, topped with a tangy vinaigrette and a sheaf of lettuce and served in a fresh roll from the neighbouring Golden Wheat bakery. Piscine perfection. $5.99–$11.90. 657 College St., 416-533-2822.

Rose Café
Considered Vietnam’s answer to the sub sandwich, the banh mi at Rose Café is better than anything you’d find at Mr. Sub. Served on a baguette, it combines dense pâté, barbecued pork, chopped cucumber, fresh carrot, leaf lettuce and cilantro sprigs. Though it’s clearly one of the city’s greatest sammies, it’s unclear how this east Chinatown café makes a profit; said delight costs only $1.50. 324 Broadview Ave., 416-406-9906.

How could you have a list of best sandwiches and not include King Sharwarma sandwiches with hot sauce?
