Best New Restaurants 2009 — The Honourable Mentions

Toronto saw many great new restaurants open last year. In our April issue, we name the top 10, but some fabulous places didn’t make the cut. Below, the newcomers that soared, but fell short of our list By James Chatto

11. Madeline’s


It’s the anti-Susur in visual terms: flocked wallpaper and Gothic taxidermy, saturated colour and filigree screens. The menu, too, is mostly Mediterranean small plates, some of them still needing better balance, most of them as delectable as the unbelievable Welsh rarebit toasts with summer truffle compote.
