Best New Restaurants 2009 — The Honourable Mentions

11. Madeline’s

It’s the anti-Susur in visual terms: flocked wallpaper and Gothic taxidermy, saturated colour and filigree screens. The menu, too, is mostly Mediterranean small plates, some of them still needing better balance, most of them as delectable as the unbelievable Welsh rarebit toasts with summer truffle compote.

Madeline’s, 601 King St. W. (at Portland St.), 416-603-2205.
