The Best of the Fringe
A primer on Toronto's biggest theatrical extravaganza By Erin Criger
Swiss Family Guy Robinson
The Fringe of Toronto Theatre Festival’s motto is “unjuried, unexpected, unforgettable.” You might also want to add “unbelievably overwhelming.” With 12 days of dramaturgical delight, and more than 1,000 performers, 136 plays and 26 venues, it’s impossible to see it all. Here’s what you won’t want to miss.
Every other Sunday at the Drake Hotel, Monkey Toast takes a Toronto celebrity interview or monologue (Gavin Crawford and Sean Cullen have participated), and spins it into improv gold. Those of us less Queen West West would do well to check them out at the Fringe. Nightly performances invite actors from five different Fringe companies to take part in the Toast-ers’ theatre sports.
When: July 5, 7, 8 and 10 to 15.
Where: Tranzac Club, 292 Brunswick Ave.
How much: free.
The Neutrino Video Project is all about the process. When the curtains rise, four small groups armed with video cameras disappear into the night. Don’t walk out, though—a patient audience is soon rewarded with a “theatrical film” improvised, shot and edited on the spot. Often hilarious, always fascinating.
When: July 5, 7, 9 to 11, 13 and 15.
Where: St. Vladimir’s Theatre, 620 Spadina Ave.
How much: $10.
Every wondered what the Swiss Family Robinson would sound like if voiced by Stewie, Brian and the rest of the Family Guy cast? Performer-writer Brian Froud does all the impressions (except Meg—she’s too hard) in Swiss Family Guy Robinson. Co-written by Canadian Comedy Award–winners the Shehori Brothers, and directed by Sabotage’s Mark Chavez.

Where: Royal St. George School, 120 Howland Ave.

When: July 5, 8 to 10, 12, 14 and 15.
Where: Helen Gardiner Theatre, 79A St. George St.

The prodigious Dave Deveau premiered a play at the 2003 Rhubarb! Festival’s Under 21 Series; produced a film, Belly, for the Queer Youth Video Project; played Pineapple in the movie Home Team; and is currently the dramaturge at Tarragon Theatre. To this year’s Fringe, he brings the ominous, tender and humorous an undershirt.
When: July 6, 7 and 11 to 15.
Where: Tarragon Extra Space, 30 Bridgmann Ave.
How much: $10.
The family-friendly KidsVenue hosts the Cow Over Moon Children’s Theatre production of Three Billy Goats Gruff. Three workaholic goats, a bridge, a bureaucratic troll…and original music by Death From Above 1979’s Sebastien Grainger!

Notorious for its innovative site-specific work, Victoria’s Theatre SKAM return to the Fringe with their latest production, The Lab. Not for the weak-bladdered or claustrophobic, the entire play takes place in a parked trailer, and features Matthew Payne as the sole denizen of a strange and secretive workplace.
When: July 5 to 9 and 11 to 16.
Where: Royal St. George School parking lot, 120 Howland Ave.
