BEST WATER
Bottled water is eco‑anathema these days—a waste of money and resources. So when we crave righteous bubbles, we head to Mildred’s Temple Kitchen, where house-made bottles of fizzy tap water travel a few metres to the table and cost a mere $2. 85 Hanna Ave., 416-588-5695.
BEST WINE
It’s been a banner year for Argentina’s malbec, among the world’s fruitiest reds. Chris McDonald, a chef who knows good wine (and good value), scoured Ontario for the last cases of Paris Goulart’s juicy 2006 Malbec Reserva from Mendoza, and found a stash in Sudbury. Run, don’t walk, to snap up the last of the $40 bottles at Cava. 1560 Yonge St., 416-979-9918.
BEST COCKTAIL
Jen Agg’s fascinating list at Black Hoof includes the irresistible Delilah: a sprightly concoction of muddled grapes, vodka and icewine that’s spritzed at the table with house-made vanilla ($12). 928 Dundas St. W., 416-551-8854.
BEST BEER
As sweet and bubbly as the blonde next door, Betelgeuse ($5.50), the new Trappist-style tripel ale from Mill Street Brewery, gets sommelier-style service at Bar Volo. 587 Yonge St., 416-928‑0008.
BEST CAFFEINE JOLT
Coffee nerds can keep their $15 cups of Esmeralda. We’ll take one of Mercury’s carefully crafted lattes ($3.95). Chocolatey, rich and smooth, their Black Cat beans make the best espresso in the city. 915 Queen St. E., 647-435-4779.
