The California Classic salad at Fresh is a one-bowl knock-out. The freshest tahini-dressed greens are topped with zesty pesto, hearty white beans, hearts of palm, avocado and toasted pecans. Grape tomatoes add an extra acid pop. $10.

Susur spawn Bart Murawiecki has turned the venerable drinking hole Inter Steer into a Roncesvalles hot spot with dishes like his thick, meaty chili—a familiar classic with a gourmet gloss. $7.

Of the dozens of soups at King’s Noodle House, Spadina’s classiest barbecue joint, the duck leg reigns supreme: an intense broth comes packed with steamed bok choy, firm noodles, scallions, and sweet, succulent meat. $6.50. 296 Spadina Ave. (at Dundas St. W.), 416-598-1817.

Abandon the popular buffet at Little India and order the eggplant bharta off the menu instead. It’s a rich curry of smoky eggplant layered with notes of cumin, coriander and sweet onion. The generous portion makes for great leftovers. $7.50. 255 Queen St. W. (at McCaul St.), 416-205-9836.

Sandwich Box, downtown’s go-to spot for DIY lunches, also offers fantastic pre-designed sandwiches. The best one comes with a stack of perfectly pink roast beef, caramelized onions, jalapeño havarti and garlic mayo on rosemary focaccia. $6.95. 67 Richmond St. W. (at Bay), 416-913-4444; plus two other GTA locations.
