Where to Eat Now

Best Burritos 2009

Perfect for a hearty lunch or sopping up a late-night pint or three, the humble wrap has conquered Toronto appetites. Here, the top five places to get in on the frenzy

1. El Rincon Mexicano satisfies burrito purists: these beauties are authentic, filled with pinto beans, rice and crumbly chorizo. Chili lovers craving a fiery fix should ask for the spicy version of the burrito mojado, which comes topped with a killer habañero sauce. $11.95.

2. As the bros behind Burrito Boyz have gone their separate ways, this ever popular basement-level clubland stop has a new name: Burrito Bandidos. The recipe hasn’t changed, though, so you’ll still have to line up for hot-off-the-grill flour tortillas stuffed with black bean purée, rice, salsa, guac, veg and tender shrimp. Small $7.50, large $8.80.

3. If size matters, check out El Palenque, where wraps as big as your bicep come with salad. The spicy chopped steak is muy delicioso. $12.95.

4. A blast of steam is the finishing touch at Mission Burrito, a Grange takeout joint that gets its name (and technique) from San Francisco’s Mission District. The hot air makes the tortilla supple, all the better to envelop sweet shredded pork. Small $5.85, large $6.85. 109 McCaul St. (at Dundas St. W.), 416-598-4300.

5. At La Mexicana, pork burritos are given the Mexico City treatment: squirted with lime and filled with grilled pineapple. The al pastor version, filled with shaved, rotisserie-roasted meat, is a sweet-and-sour delight. $8.
