A Beautiful Find

Stylist to the stars Peter Papapetrou—of Slice’s Renovate My Wardrobe— divulges his Boxing Day guerrilla tactics By Courtney Shea

How do you deal with Boxing Day mayhem?
I always plot out my route. Go a few days beforehand to assess and locate what you’re after. And, of course, start early. After two o’clock, it’s just crazy—it’s not even worth it. Parking is also ridiculous. Take the subway there and leave in a cab.

What are the mandatory stops in Bloor-Yorkville?
Holt’s is definitely a must-hit—it’s a one-stop shop. H&M, Zara, Club Monaco and Lacoste are also really good.

Any insider tips?
A good relationship with the staff at the store is a big bonus.

Do you have a philosophy when it comes to bargain hunting?
If you say, “I’ve got a thousand bucks to blow on Boxing Day,” you need to think about buying classics instead of trendy or one-time-wear pieces. Shoes and bags are always a good bet. Denim is also smart; just be sure to try the jeans on beforehand, so you can just grab ’em and get out.

What’s the Holy Grail item this year?
There’s a pair of Roger Vivier shoes, with a big rose on each toe, at Holt’s. They’re regularly $1,795. I know a few girls who already have their eyes on them.

Do you have any qualms about buying “last season”?
If you’re a smart shopper and have a good eye, no one will know the difference. A sweater dress, with a beautiful cut, is timeless.

Final words of wisdom?
Just because it’s on sale doesn’t mean that it’s right. People are like, “I got this for two bucks.” Good for you—but it still looks like crap.
