Amal

Richie Mehta
(101’, Canada)
***

A mix of Guy de Maupassant, O. Henry, Vittorio De Sica and Hindu legend, Amal is about a humble auto rickshaw driver in bustling Delhi, and the complications that arise when he is given a surprise bequest from one of his customers, G.K. Jayaram (Naseeruddin Shah). As a fable, Amal’s elements are deliberately simple: Amal himself (Rupinder Nagra) is a shambling, obliging embodiment of the moral superiority that fiction so often bestows upon the poor; G.K.’s mercenary relatives are great villains (especially Vik Sahay as Vivek); and Amal’s pretty love interest, Pooja (Koel Purie), is a predictable mix of sweet and sassy. Don’t go looking to Amal for edgy, brainy dispatches from the developing world; its pleasures are mostly G rated, though abundant enough to make it winsome, entertaining viewing. (DB)
