A confluence of factors has recently made Toronto an innovation generator: a critical mass of crackerjack researchers at glistening, expanded hospitals, ambitious universities and tech start-ups; deep pools of money to fund the necessary years of experimentation that lead to glorious success; and no shortage of bombastic brainiacs. The following pages contain the Toronto-born ideas that impressed us most this year. While some of these innovations have profound implications for our health and social order, others solve no-less-terrifying conundrums, such as finding parking, kicking the Facebook habit and satisfying impatient cravings for a fresh-baked cookie.
