How the president of Steam Whistle Brewery—a must-see venue during this month’s Doors Open—would spend a single perfect day. Toronto on an unlimited budget By Amy Verner
I’d start with a workout in my garage gym—a.k.a. the Pumpatorium. Then I’d walk from my house near College and Crawford to Mars (432 College St., 416-322-7111), where I’d order eggs over easy with bacon and a large OJ ($14.50). I love how they put breakfast in front of you in less than five minutes. Next, I’d jump into a taxi ($50) and head up to the Toronto Camping Centre (1841 Hwy. 7, 905-738‑1421) to pick up a 40-foot RV with a slide-out living room ($249,500). There, I’d meet my driver—hired for the day (Concierge by Request, 416-922-1423, $950)—and we’d go pick up 15 of my high school buddies. Our first stop would be Boardsports (2010 Yonge St., 416-485‑9463) so everyone could get their own O’Neill Epic II wetsuit (16 suits, $3,200), and I’d make sure to pick up four pucks of Mr. Zogs Sex Wax cold water surf wax ($12). Lunch would be at Pho Hung (350 Spadina Ave., 416-593-4274). Owner Thoi Nguyen would make sure we got our fill of wings and delicious mango drinks. I’d even order a fried pigeon (lunch for 16, $150). The plan would be to take the guys for an afternoon of lake surfing at Hanlan’s Point on my boat, a 1974 motor yacht (fuel, $100) that’s docked at Marina Quay West (235 Queens Quay W., 416-203‑1212). I’d bring along a new Force 10 Sea Grill 425 marine barbecue (Genco Marine, 544 King St. W., 416-504-2891, $795), New York strip steaks from the Healthy Butcher (565 Queen St. W., 416-674-2642, $300) and five cases from my brewery (255 Bremner Blvd., 416-362-2337, $210). Lake surfing is a Canadianized version of real surfing; you get on a board and hold the rope for about 50 feet, and then you ride the wave until you lose momentum. We’d fire up the barbecue at sunset. Back at my house, I’d host a cocktail party for about 100 additional friends and family. We’d roast a whole pig (Healthy Butcher, $1,210) and I’d make some vegetable skewers (Pusateri’s, 57 Yorkville Ave., 416-785‑9100, $400). At 11 p.m., I’d take whoever is game to the Horseshoe Tavern (368 Queen St. W., 416-598‑4753),
where we’d listen to some Canadian indie bands. The last of us would have a hot tub at my place, finished off with some hand-rolled Nicaraguan cigars (Mombacho Cigars, 416-875‑6783, $288 for 16). They’re the most delicious things. After everyone leaves, I’d take a hot shower and be done—fast asleep by 4:30.

I always wanted to try surfing so I figure, what better place to start than South Africa? Totally entering the Blue Crush 2 contest. http://bluecrush2-southafricacontest.com...
