In the eyes of the law, a bike is a vehicle like any other. The cops can nab you for all manner of two-wheeled transgressions, from making an illegal turn to riding the wrong way down a one-way street. Though there’s nothing new about these rules, police tend to go on blitzes at the beginning of every cycling season. It’s likely that you were one of the 2,076 cyclists nabbed during the recent Safe Cycling Week. The most common fines are for riding on the sidewalk ($85), running a red ($180) and failing to have a signalling device, like a bell ($80). Strangely enough, wearing a helmet is not required for riders over the age of 18, but if your 10-year-old gets caught sans protective headgear, be prepared to pay up to $95.
