Viggo Mortensen parties with Danes at The Spoke Club

Viggo Mortenson

Viggo Mortenson

We hear Viggo Mortensen celebrated with the Danish cast and crew of the movie Applause until the wee hours of the morning last Sunday at The Spoke Club. When we called last week to ask about hours, we were told the Spoke was closed on Sundays. Too bad. We’d have loved to party with Mortensen and some great Danes. (Photo by James Helmer)

The Tastemakers’ Lounge: generous to the famous

Where’s a TIFF-goer to head for a semblance of home when they are miles before sleep? To the Tastemakers Lounge, of course. In its tenth year at the InterContinental, the gifting suite to the stars has gotten comfortable, feeling more like a super-yuppie condo than swag showroom.

Upon entrance to the airy, livable room, things soothed and wafted: neutral decor by Croma Design and PC Home, faintly spiced almonds mingling with inoffensive fragrances from D&G (most popular? L’Imperatrice; it translates to “The Star”). Box sets of AMC shows Mad Men and Breaking Bad went over big with the cast of DefendorWoody Harrelson and Kat Dennings—while bamboo tees by Guats went out on the backs of Colin Firth and Agora’s Oscar Isaac. Ally Sheedy got good hair from a Chiggy’s Touch stylist with Rowenta tools. Amanda Schull (danced most famously in Centre Stage, now more credibly in Mao’s Last Dancer) primped with Joe Fresh Beauty. And Ben Barnes, the wasted anti-hero of Dorian Gray, can now recover with the aid of his new PC Home personal water-filter bottle.

As for us, we just wanted to steal a silky pillow for our hollowed-out heads.

Queen Street poutine emporium becomes hub of drunken revellers, grease and Canadian talent

CarloRota

Carlo Rota

We hear that Poutini’s has been a Canadian celeb hotspot of sorts since TIFF started. Carlo Rota, of Little Mosque on the Prairie and 24, has visited, along with Spencer Rice, of Kenny vs. Spenny, and Chuck Inglish of The Cool Kids. Turns out no matter how famous you are, fries, gravy, and cheese make for a  delicious drunken combo. (Photo by slidercleo)

This is Boredom: on attending the eTalk TIFF Closing Party

We never would have guessed that the most difficult TIFF party to gain access to would also be our last. Friday evening, we headed over to This Is London for the eTalk TIFF Closing Party, hosted by Ben Mulroney and Tanya Kim, where we encountered more than a little resistance at the front door. When we told the guest list attendant we were from Toronto Life, she demanded proof. Our editor’s business cards (we had eight of them) were not enough. Thankfully, we had our BlackBerry with Internet access to prove that our name was indeed on the Website. This also wasn’t enough, and the intrepid young lady further asked for ID to confirm our name. At first we were irked by all this obfuscating nonsense, but not long afterward, we concluded that she was likely trying to save us from what awaited inside.
