Four Weddings Canada, episode 6: your wedding sucks

Mary, Shannon, Gayle and Julia (Image: Four Weddings Canada)

Four Weddings Canada Episode 6

This week, Four Weddings Canada showcases its first gay wedding. Naturally, given past reality TV show models, we’ve come to expect the gay contestant to be the sassiest. Not so for 38-year-old Gayle, who’s about as entertaining as a 12-hour wait in a hospital waiting room. Instead of sass, episode six gives us a battle for bitchdom, complete with some of the bluntest honesty we’ve heard to date and a bride we have to assume is an infant because she can’t understand how to eat a slice of kiwi with her bare hands (it’s just never been done before!). Find out who doesn’t like drag queens, who’s the worst person ever to her own mother and whose boobs look great in her dress in our Four Weddings Canada TV brief after the jump.

Top Chef Canada’s Lisa Ray gets engaged in Napa Valley (proving, once again, that wine + diamonds = romance)

Top Chef Canada host, actress and beautiful person Lisa Ray took to Twitter this week to announce her engagement to her consultant boyfriend (hey, if Twitter is good enough for Prince William, it’s good enough for the rest of us). The tweet reads: “ ‘Delicious update’: ENGAGED to the love of my life. Jason Dehni proposed in Napa” and is accompanied by a shot of Ray with her newly minted fiancé and a big ol’ rock. Does this mean the upcoming season of Top Chef Canada will be heavy on the canapés, buffets and wedding cake? She does have her nuptials to plan (yes, we know it was filmed in advance, but imagine if she could have dictated the challenges?). Read the entire story [Times of India] »

Four Weddings Canada, episode 5: who wants to marry a fifth grader?

Lisa, Gladys, Rayana and Taylor (Image: Four Weddings Canada)

Four Weddings Canada Episode 5

In this week’s episode of Four Weddings Canada, we quickly learn that, for some reason, people are still using “bling” as a reference to basically all things that reflect light. Seriously, stop it. We also meet 27-year-old bride Taylor, a woman whose intellect rivals a picky-eating, coddled eight-year-old child—she’s prissy, bratty, culturally insensitive and stupid (so, she’s good on paper, presumably?). And that’s just one of the brides. Find out who’s a real Debbie Downer, who thinks black is a “sad colour” and who refers to herself as a “people’s princess” after the jump.

Four Weddings Canada, episode 4: drunk husband-bride

Jill, Julia, Kim and Steph (Image: Four Weddings Canada)

Four Weddings CanadaEpisode 4

What’s a husband-bride? It’s a husband who stands in as a contestant after his wife has come down with a bit of food poisoning, an invention courtesy of Four Weddings Canada. The outcome is hilarious, and hilarity is something this week’s episode desperately needed. If the HB hadn’t been present, this edition would’ve been the most saccharine to date. Sorry, brides, but you all thought everything was lovely? Everything? And you know why you loved all of the dresses? Because you all basically had the same one. Get over yourselves. Find out why this week’s husband-bride, Matthew, was amazing and see who measured off the charts on our Bitch-O-Meter after the jump.

Four Weddings Canada, episode 3: cultural insensitivity edition

Huria, Samantha, Jessica and Rafela (Image: Four Weddings Canada)

Four Weddings CanadaEpisode 3

This week’s episode pairs stodgy classical wedding ceremonies from 29-year-old Rafela and 35-year-old Samantha (who the producers portray as an infant trapped in a grown woman’s body) with cultural unions, like 28-year-old Huria’s Afghani celebration and 27-year-old Jessica’s Jewish-Indian ceremony. Some of the brides are culturally insensitive, but the narrator breaks the tension with one of his now-classic sex jokes. Find out who is a stone-cold bitch and who is allegedly “getting stuffed” in our TV brief after the jump.

Sixteen fantastic picks from this year’s Wedding Co. Show (and yes, brides-to-be, macarons are still trendy)

Macarons! Cupcakes! Sugar! (Image: Simone Olivero)

This past weekend, The Carlu played host to an intimate (albeit overwhelming) boutique-style wedding extravaganza. The 11th annual Wedding Co. Show, curated by former wedding photographer Catherine Lash, filled room after room with frosted creations, lace-trimmed gowns, DJs, musicians, caterers, florists, photographers, videographers, invitation artists, jewelled and feathered accessories, bespoke menswear, venue ideas and even dry cleaners. Unlike many of the other bridal shows that infiltrate the city at this time of year, this one had a relatively modest list of 125 vendors, hand-selected by Lash, who believes they’re the best of the best in a sometimes oversaturated market. Creative displays (that we actually wanted to stop and look at), delicious samples (lots of them), an etiquette booth (we may have needed to know when to stop sampling) and a soaring tree installation by artist in residence Marjorie Campbell were all important in making this show welcoming and interactive. But it’s still a trade show focused on weddings, and much like the brides-to-be in attendance, we were overwhelmed with how much there was to see. Check out 16 of our favourite vendors, including some of the best-designed booths, after the jump.

Four Weddings Canada, episode 2: attack of the killer bee edition

Shannon, Renee, Princess Sabrina and Jen (Image: Four Weddings Canada)

Four Weddings Canada, Episode 2

We’ve grown accustomed to certain reality TV tropes: the people who “aren’t here to make friends,” the lonely folks who legitimately appear to be on the show to make friends, and the dullards who say stupid things or are generally so boring that the audience repeatedly yells, “Shut up, ______!” Unfortunately, in episode two of Four Weddings Canada, the brides aimed to be successful villains and super-friends, but we soon realized that not one of them was really up for the challenge. See our Brides Behaving Badly report cards (complete with Bitch-o-Meter) and find out who was named Head Bitch in Ceremony (H.B.I.C.) after the jump.

Four Weddings Canada, episode 1: Kraft Dinner edition

Chantal, Princess Kristen, Melissa and Jori (Image: Four Weddings Canada)

Four Weddings Canada, Episode 1

The new Slice reality show Four Weddings Canada follows four brides pulling out all the stops—and claws—to win a dream honeymoon vacation. Each bride will score weddings on the quality of the food, the venue and the dress, but we’re more interested in how awful these women are. Meet the inaugural cast: 24-year-old self-described “princess” Kristen, who plans to have (shocker!) a princess-themed wedding and hates mermaid-style gowns; 39-year-old Chantal, who is planning a soap opera–themed wedding and wears a mermaid-style gown, but hates cash bars; 21-year-old Jori, a country girl whose wedding has a cash bar and Kraft Dinner as a side; and Melissa, a 28-year-old aerobics enthusiast who is planning a traditional Latin ceremony and, turns out, hates Kraft Dinner. Check out who was naughty and who was nice (spoiler alert: no one) in our Brides Behaving Badly report card after the jump.

Adam Giambrone updates his marital status on Facebook

It’s official (Image: Tsar Kasim)

Former councillor and one-time mayoral aspirant Adam Giambrone recently married his long-time partner Sarah McQuarrie, according to, uh, Facebook. The Toronto Star reports that Giambrone changed his marital status on Facebook, provoking an outpouring of likes and comments. Apparently the wedding took place at One King West, although Giambrone, true to form, couldn’t help but post a link to a Torontoist story about transit cuts in the minutes leading up the big moment. At the time of publication, the like count on his post is 135.

Attention lazy wedding guests: The Gift Network—an online wedding registry service—has launched in Toronto

Gift registries for the internet generation, like these two crazy kids. (Image: Gene Chan)

Toronto-based website The Gift Network launched earlier this month, providing a free online gift registry that features partnerships with over 100 stores across the GTA. Soon-to-be-wedded folk who want to skip the process of entering a few stores and scanning a few gravy boats can now avoid human contact altogether—that is, until the big night. The Gift Network offers products from boutique stores like Golda’s Kitchen, The Cookbook Store, Bohm Furniture, BlackBird Vintage Finds, Metropolis Living, Umbra Concept Store and Grassroots Environmental Products, and it also allows users to post links to registries from stores that are not offered by the website, which means maybe we’ll take one HBC multistripe point blanket for our collection after all. We’re intrigued by the idea of a catchall registry that allows brides- and grooms-to-be to register for a lot of what they need all in one place, but much like those wedge booties you bought online that you’ve never worn, the one downside to this whole project is that newlyweds might get things they never needed in the first place—online shopping is still hit or miss, and if you don’t hold it, touch it or scan it, it might mean a series of decorative collectibles that looked decent on a screen, but not in your home.

Toronto’s second ever Gay Wedding Show to take place on October 16

First dance (Image: David Goehring)

The State of New York approved same-sex marriage earlier this summer and Ontario passed a similar law back in 2003, yet we haven’t seen a wedding show that caters primarily to homosexual couples in Toronto. OutTV’s Shaun Proulx has noticed this void and will be emceeing this city’s first second Gay Wedding Show on October 16 at the Delta Chelsea Inn. It’s a cause particularly close to Proulx’s heart, as he experienced discrimination while planning his own wedding—the owner of Proulx’s would-be wedding venue cancelled his booking after learning it was for a same-sex marriage.

Weddings Week 2011: Toronto’s top wedding photographer shares his secrets for success

Shooting in his signature photojournalistic style, Johnny Lam is booked solid every weekend during high season. His best advice to couples: pick the right person for the job, and then back off

(Image: Vanessa Heins)

Best thing about the job: The most rewarding moment is when I show the couples the final product, and I get to see the expression on their faces when they relive the details of the day.

And the worst: Weddings move at an insanely fast pace, with lighting changes and moves from indoor to outdoor, location to location. A great photographer needs to be prepared for anything. I shot one wedding during a downpour so heavy that I had to run to Shoppers Drug Mart to buy new socks, and one in a barn where the power went out.

What every couple should know: My best advice is to look for not just a great photographer, but the right photographer for you. The bride and groom need to familiarize themselves with the range of styles out there and identify what they want: glamorous, traditional, artsy, journalistic. After that, it’s important to communicate your expectations. If there are certain pictures you absolutely must have, make sure the photographer knows that beforehand—we’re not mind readers.
