Finally, Topshop confirms plans for first Toronto store

See? Topshop can be hipster (Image: Topshop.com)

Over at Now magazine, Andrew Sardone has solved the mystery of Topshop’s first Toronto location. It’s not going to be at The Bay, as we previously heard, but on Ossington Avenue inside the boutique Jonathan and Olivia. Sardone reports, “O’Brien is blowing out J&O’s back wall to create an 800-square-foot Topshop boutique that will open to shoppers on Saturday, June 19 at 9 a.m.” Jonathan and Olivia is known for carrying such pricey but youthful designer labels as Alexander Wang and Rag and Bone, so it’ll be interesting to see how this cheapo, fast-fashion brand fits into the store.

London calling: Canuck designers take centre stage during London fashion week

Canadians are getting a lot of attention from Londoners during the city’s fall-winter 2010 fashion week. The designers have politicians’ wives in a tizzy, American pop stars are paying personal visits, and the shows are the setting for controversy and catfights. Here, an introduction to three must-know Canucks—all with Toronto connections—who are dazzling Britain.

Erdem Moralioglu

Shtick: Feminine, frilly, graphic prints (more sophisticated than cutesy) perfect for tea parties and après five.
Toronto connection: Known in the industry by his first name only, the half-Turkish, half-English designer grew up in Montreal but spent time at Ryerson for fashion design. Months later, he dropped out and skipped town to study in London, where he won the Chevening Scholarship from the British Fashion Council and was later nominated for the BFC’s 2009 Collection of the Year award.
Path to success: Erdem stocks the shelves of luxe global retailers including Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Browns and The Room (at The Bay). He recently received a nod from the wife of Britain’s prime minister, Sarah Brown, when she wore an Erdem dress to give the opening speech for London fashion week.
Celebrity fans: Sarah Brown, Michelle Obama, Thandie Newton, Chloë Sevigny and Toronto-born model Tara Gill.

Target is coming to Canada

First was the news that Topshop is considering opening in The Bay, and now Target is contemplating a move north of the border. After a year of dismal sales stateside, Tar-jay, beloved for its cheap fashions and collaborations with credible labels like Rodarte, is considering whether expanding into the Canadian market would improve its outlook. Unfortunately, it will probably be at least three years until the retailer makes the move.

Canadian designer Mark Fast declines to give clothes to Lady Gaga, gives them to Topshop instead

Just before the holidays, we predicted that Canadian designer Mark Fast would be thrust into the spotlight in 2010. Three short weeks later, we were proven right. Back then, we wondered whether the designer’s attention-grabbing show during London fashion week (it included plus-sized models) was a fluke, but since his quick trip to Toronto in December, he’s been making headlines all over the world. It seems the humble Manitoban has a knack for handling the press. Last week, he refused to lend his clothes to armoured style icon Lady Gaga (even though he loves “Bad Romance”), saying his designs are not about “fast food fashion.” That’s a head scratcher of a statement, since he launched a lower-priced diffusion line called Faster the same week and since there is talk about him designing a line for the speediest of fashion retailers, Topshop (also rumoured to be opening in Toronto in the near future).

Hermès accused of hoarding alligator skins, Karl Lagerfeld creates SpongeBob doll, Tom Ford disses Jason Reitman

• Canadian model Coco Rocha announced last week that she’s launching her own fashion line. No details yet, but her sketches include high-waisted skinny jeans, ankle-skimming pants, and a shirt, skirt and cape. We’re not impressed with the initial designs, but if her line comes out anything like Kate Moss for Topshop (we hope, coming to The Bay), we won’t complain. [Oh So Coco]

SpongeBob SquarePants got a makeover courtesy of Karl Lagerfeld, who moulded the cartoon creature into a golden mini-Karl, complete with sunglasses, fingerless gloves, shirt and tie. The figurine fetched 1,000 euros at a World Wildlife Fund charity auction. Lagerfeld has already designed a teddy bear in his image, but fans shouldn’t wait for a Karl doll. The designer told W magazine, “Nothing scares me more than people with some doll collection. Frightening.” [WWD]

The Bay department stores might house Topshop boutiques

TheBay

It’s been a good year for The Bay: the once-beleaguered department chain has lured buzzy brands, including some, like Juicy Couture, aimed at a younger demographic; it won the bid to be the official Canadian Olympics clothier (a post previously held by Roots); and this fall it relaunched The Room, a stunning luxury womenswear section at its Yonge and Queen flagship. In today’s ROB Magazine, Marina Strauss talks with Jeff Sherman, the CEO of Hudson’s Bay Company and former COO of Polo Ralph Lauren, about the store’s transformation, including a possible partnership with British fast-fashion retailer Topshop. Here are the highlights:

The Olympics line has been selling like hotcakes.
The product is selling extraordinarily well. The standout, for sure, has been the red Olympic mittens. Canada and red are synonymous.
