We pick 21 of the city’s coolest (and coziest) sweaters, just in time for (a delayed) winter

’Tis the season for saying things like “’tis the season” and being so freezing cold that we’re required to wear an undershirt, some sort of waffle-weave thermal wear, a sweater, a jacket, a scarf, gloves, boots, two pairs of socks and a festive toque. With this is mind, we scoured the city looking for sweaters. We found one that makes us feel nostalgic (the youthful fox sweater from Topshop), one that announces “I’m an adult” (the Theory knit turtleneck from Holt Renfrew), another that’s perfect for a tiny tot (the angora sweater dress from Advice From a Caterpillar) and many more. Check out our 21 picks in a gallery after the jump »

THE SCENE: The Bay and Topshop host an intimate dinner at One in the Hazelton Hotel

TORONTO FASHION WEEK | SEE ALL This week marked the opening of Topshop and Topman at Yorkdale, which we’re certain is already yesterday’s news. Frankly, as hosts Bonnie Brooks and Sir Philip Green would agree (they both mentioned it in their speeches), this was a move on The Bay’s part that has been years in the making (and as such, we’ve been hearing about the acquisition for what feels like years as well). To celebrate, Sir Philip Green, Brooks and other Topshop dignitaries—like brand director for Topman David Shepherd, Topshop managing director Mary Homer, Topshop creative director Kate Phelan and Topman design and development director Gordon Richardson—hosted a dinner at One restaurant that brought together model Coco Rocha and fashion plates like Fashion’s Susie Sheffman and Bernadette Morra, Flare’s Liz Cabral, Sharp magazine’s Jeremy FreedNational Post society columnist Shinan Govani, Suzanne Boyd, MuchMusic’s Sarah Taylor, writer Sarah Nicole Prickett, the Globe and Mail’s Tiyana Grulovic, Men’s Fashion’s David Livingston and the Kills’ Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince. Topshop prepares for a big British celebration for the store’s official launch at Yorkdale on October 5

Topshop is opening the doors to its flagship location at Yorkdale with a big two-day British-style celebration that will feature two U.K. bands: an invite-only concert on October 4 by indie duo The Kills at the Hoxton (69 Bathurst St.) and a free public show on October 5 by pop-electro outfit Friendly Fires at Yorkdale’s Topman. On opening day, the store will offer beauty makeovers and a photo booth, and there will be lemonade and sweet treats for power shoppers to consume. There’s no word yet on whether friends of the brand—like Kate Moss and Sienna Miller—will be in attendance, but given that there’s an opportunity to peruse and purchase exclusive items (some pieces are one of a kind—once they’re gone, they’re gone) at the store on October 5, we think we’d prefer fewer people trying to rob us of the opportunity to buy clothes we may or may not need. After we check out the new digs, we’ll be heading over to the Friendly Fires concert to catch some of front man Ed Macfarlanes outrageous dance moves.

The Scene: Topshop launches, to what appears to be mostly hipsters, at The Bay on Queen Street

A novel concept: getting drunk and then shopping (Image: David Pike)

By now, most people know that The Bay is bringing Topshop to Toronto, and last night it held a fete and shopping event to celebrate the British brand’s arrival. DJ Lauren Burns Coady provided the music to an array of young women, including writers Sarah Nicole Prickett and Kiwi Mohamed and photographer Jaclyn Locke—at one point it became a bit difficult to discern one painfully hip young person from the next. The Topman brand didn’t have any presence at this party, but that didn’t stop model Jano Badovinac and artist Nick Fox from showing up to get their photos taken and, as one does at these sorts of things, drink. As some may have guessed, it was a very young crowd, which was likely an effort on The Bay’s part to separate the Room consumer from the younger, cooler Topshop enthusiast. We missed Suzanne Rogers. Check out the scene from last night’s party in a gallery after the jump.

VIDEO: Hudson’s Bay Company shows off its Topshop range, shoppers wear Ray-Bans

Some people think that a short journey to New York creates memories that couldn’t possibly be shared by Toronto locals (ugh); for a time, buying an overpriced silk-screen T-shirt from Topshop was one of those memories. Now, The Bay—the official seller of the Topshop and Topman brands in Toronto—has slowly begun to uncover their top picks for what will eventually be sold in stores, and most of what’s on offer looks pretty great (although the flip-flops could arguably be purchased from Old Navy for much less). We found this sun-soaked video from Topshop’s pop-up shop earlier this summer and, unsurprisingly, Topshop consumers (at least the ones who attended this event) appear to be young and eager to share New York minutes, wear Ray-Ban sunglasses (likely all the time) and stand around not buying anything for long periods of time.

The Weekender: Deli Duel 2, Toronto Sketch Com-ageddon and six other events on our to-do list

Strawberries, Diamond Rings and Zane Caplansky

1. ST. LAWRENCE MARKET STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL (FREE!)
It’s berry season in Ontario, and St. Lawrence Market is celebrating with its annual strawberry-focused fest. The morning’s events are split between how-to sessions (making strawberry-mint jam with Bumpercrop, say, or a cooking demo with celeb chefs Massimo Capra and Michael Bonacini) and taste tests (chocolate-covered strawberries, chocolate strawberry shortcake and strawberry lemonade). You really can’t go wrong. June 18. St. Lawrence Market, 92-95 Front St. E., stlawrencemarket.com.

2. NORTH BY NORTHEAST
In recent years, NXNE has really expanded its offerings to become something of a cultural event. (Hello, film fest and digital media conference.) But it’s also the same gigantic, new music-focused fest we’ve loved for the past 17 years—that would be the seven days and seven nights of shows and parties bit—with a lineup that includes Devo, The Pharcyde, Fucked Up, Diamond Rings, the Dum Dum Girls and Braids. To June 19. Five-day wristband $50; events at Yonge-Dundas Square free. Various locations, 416-863-6963, nxne.com.

Topshop and Topman officially have a home at The Bay at Yorkdale, and not one, but two pop-up shops

The Bay has announced that U.K. imports Topshop and Topman will arrive at Yorkdale this September. Topshop will be joining others like J. Crew (slated to open this summer), and Victoria’s Secret and Burberry, which also opened their first Canadian outposts at the out-of-downtown mall.

Downtowners needn’t despair though; The Bay has planned a pop-up shop next weekend from June 17 to 19 at Queen and Soho, and a capsule collection of Topshop favourites curated by Toronto’s Tommy Ton opening June 30 at the Queen Street Bay flagship. Who would have guessed Toronto’s hottest place to get fashion-forward duds would be where we watched our first R-rated movie and overstayed our welcome at the Rainforest Café?

Failure to launch: Topshop forgets Jonathan and Olivia

After The Bay announced that they’d be welcoming “the first” Topshop in Canada yesterday, Jackie O’Brien was understandably irritated. The co-owner of Jonathan and Olivia was understanding of the need for franchising, but perturbed by The Bay’s dissociating her from Toronto’s Topshop introduction. Today, O’Brien indirectly responds to her critics in a press release, stating, “Topshop approached us over 18 months ago to test the Canadian market, as they considered us to be the leading independent retailer.”

Introducing: John Allan’s men’s spa, yet another Hudson’s Bay Company acquisition

The place: Wednesday night’s opening of John Allan’s spa for men took place at The Bay’s flagship on Queen Street (just like so many things seem to these days). Occupying a corner of the third floor, the guys-only spot offers treatments for the shopping-weary fellow. The view doesn’t offer much serenity (it looks out over people who either can’t afford a membership or don’t want one), but we still think an accessible Toronto boys club is worth celebrating. Once The Bay gets its decent restaurant, we’ll never leave.

Topshop’s coming to Queen Street: in something of a coup, The Bay nabs the fast-fashion retailer

Photograph of existing Topshop location (Image: supplied by The Bay)

We’ve been wondering for months when Topshop would establish its first Canadian flagship store. Well, last night, our questions were answered, as The Bay’s president and CEO Bonnie Brooks announced that Topshop and Topman will be opening within the year at the department store’s Queen Street flagship, marking a second attempt for the U.K. fast-fashion purveyor to break into the Toronto market.

Just Opened: Topshop makes its Toronto debut at Jonathan and Olivia

The Topshop area is tucked in the back of Jonathan and Olivia

The place: Fast-fashion chain Topshop enjoys a cult-like following in Britain and the U.S. thanks to its collaborations with celebs (Kate Moss) and designers (Mark Fast). So when the company announced that it would be opening an 800-square-foot mini-shop inside Ossington boutique Jonathan and Olivia, the city’s fashion pack was all a-Twitter. It’s a strategy Topshop used when it first opened in New York, taking over a floor of the Opening Ceremony store to prime the market before committing to a stand-alone location.

Finally, Topshop confirms plans for first Toronto store

See? Topshop can be hipster (Image: Topshop.com)

Over at Now magazine, Andrew Sardone has solved the mystery of Topshop’s first Toronto location. It’s not going to be at The Bay, as we previously heard, but on Ossington Avenue inside the boutique Jonathan and Olivia. Sardone reports, “O’Brien is blowing out J&O’s back wall to create an 800-square-foot Topshop boutique that will open to shoppers on Saturday, June 19 at 9 a.m.” Jonathan and Olivia is known for carrying such pricey but youthful designer labels as Alexander Wang and Rag and Bone, so it’ll be interesting to see how this cheapo, fast-fashion brand fits into the store.
