Klaxon Howl shows its typical vests and denim, in addition to intense model walks and the most stylish male guests

TORONTO FASHION WEEK | SEE ALL After last season’s sailor-themed runway and two successful collaborations with The Bay (we’re still gushing over last fall’s duffle bag with heritage HBC stripes, spotted on Tommy Ton this week), we had really high expectations for Klaxon Howl’s spring collection. This week’s stark white runway felt naked without the anchors, barrels and other boat kitsch that had people talking last spring. The front row had some of designer Matt Robinson’s best customers (and some of our choice for most stylish men), Joe Amio, Martin James and moustached runway favourite Jano Badovinac, who once again walked in the show. Like seasons past, there was a series of vests, like a fitted grey wool vest with a subtle chain closure or the unbuttoned, distressed denim sleeveless jacket paired with a short-sleeve button-up—but the high-waisted denim and double-belted pleated shorts left us mystified, wondering who could ever pull those off. Check out our look at this week’s Klaxon Howl spring/summer 2012 show after the jump.

Todd Lynn packs the house at the Ritz-Carlton for the last runway of “the ShOws” series

Todd Lynn greets his packed house—the only packed house at “the ShOws” all week (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

TORONTO FASHION WEEK | SEE ALL Todd Lynn closed out “the ShOws” at the Ritz-Carlton on Friday with the busiest crowd we’d seen that week. Rumours swirled about Juliette Lewis (who sported his designs during TIFF) attending (we couldn’t spot her), but others, like Alexandra Weston, Tommy Ton and Jeremy Laing, were still seen in the front row. Lynn served up a collection with a blue and grey colour palette: satiny dresses, revealing knit sweaters (on men and women) and microsuede coats. We liked the metallic rods (which look like safety pins from afar) affixed to cropped jackets and low-cut blazers, but the enormous top paired with short pants was a look best left to the Lady Gagas of the world (let your freak flag fly). After the runway show, guests gathered to discuss their Friday evening plans, and the “HER” party at La Perla thrown by Frank Griggs (Laing’s husband and creator of the much lauded fashioncalendar.ca) seemed to be the place to be—designers Calla Haynes and Thomas Tait were spotted outside smoking and discussing their inevitable stopovers in New York City before returning to London, and we noticed an indoor scarf–wearing Jean-Pierre Braganza inside discoing the night away. It is hard to believe that Toronto Fashion Week hasn’t even started yet. Check out our complete Rogue Fashion Week coverage to see what you missed last week, and check out our full gallery of  Todd Lynn’s spring/summer 2012 collection after the jump.

Topshop and Topman officially have a home at The Bay at Yorkdale, and not one, but two pop-up shops

The Bay has announced that U.K. imports Topshop and Topman will arrive at Yorkdale this September. Topshop will be joining others like J. Crew (slated to open this summer), and Victoria’s Secret and Burberry, which also opened their first Canadian outposts at the out-of-downtown mall.

Downtowners needn’t despair though; The Bay has planned a pop-up shop next weekend from June 17 to 19 at Queen and Soho, and a capsule collection of Topshop favourites curated by Toronto’s Tommy Ton opening June 30 at the Queen Street Bay flagship. Who would have guessed Toronto’s hottest place to get fashion-forward duds would be where we watched our first R-rated movie and overstayed our welcome at the Rainforest Café?

The Scene: Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez hosted a hot party last night

Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez don’t sweat it at The Bay last night (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Last night in The Room at The Bay, this month’s fete celebrated Proenza Schouler designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez. The Room is almost the perfect environment for a party, with good lighting for photos and lots of room to explore, but like any good party, the best place to hang out is the kitchen, or in The Bay’s case, one very cramped corner, hovering around the title guests. This gave way to sweat-lodge heat that created what one partygoer described as a “distinct fashion B.O.,” but McCollough and Hernandez drank very chilled champagne anyway and toasted an appearance-well-done alongside Suzanne Rogers, Nicholas Mellamphy, Shinan Govani, Stacey Kimmel, Jeremy Laing, Tommy Ton, Kimberley Newport-Mimran, Stephen Wong, Kirk Pickersgill, Susie Sheffman and Liz Cabral. Check out our full scene gallery below.

The Scene: the best of Anna Dello Russo and Tommy Ton (and some hot guests, too)

Anna Dello Russo speaks authoritatively with a golden pomegranate on her head (Image: David Pike)

Everyone already assumed it would be difficult to compete with Anna Dello Russo at the The Bay’s private launch of When Tommy Met Anna, a exhibit of photos of Russo shot by Tommy Ton. Her many accessories include a signature gold cherry headband, a Jil Sander peplum and a seemingly endless supply of jewels. Many wondered what the guests would wear to impress Ton’s muse, and frankly, we were curious, too. The gathering brought out a vibrant orange Jil Sander maxi skirt with peplum worn by Stacey Kimel, and even Ainsley Kerr strutted into The Room wearing an interesting knit dress that seemed to accentuate her hips in an overstated fashion. See some amazing photos of the guests, Ton and Dello Russo in a gallery after the jump.

Anna Dello Russo likes Toronto, trashy clothes, Disney, sparkles and garbage

Tommy Ton laughs, but not at Anna Dello Russo’s archival Wayne Clarke feather bomb (Image: David Pike)

We weren’t sure what to expect when granted the opportunity to participate in a group interview of Anna Dello Russo and Tommy Ton at The Room. And we really didn’t know what to expect when the event was delayed an hour and we were asked to wait in complete silence (a video was being recorded). Was Dello Russo as much of a diva as one might expect from a woman whose glamorous and expensive wardrobe requires its own apartment? When we finally sat down with her and Ton, we discovered that underneath her abundant Wayne Clarke feather cape and the Erdem sheath dress, she was not what we expected—as a matter of fact, she was hilarious. After the jump, see a gallery of the photo exhibition, Dello Russo’s hour-seven outfit (she had many costume changes) and the adorable relationship that is When Tommy Met Anna.

Oh, Canada: Anna Dello Russo goes red and white—and green and yellow—for The Bay

The Bay’s Nicholas Mellamphy presents Anna Dello Russo with a unique gift, as Tommy Ton looks on (Image: The Bay)

She’s here! Anna Dello Russo, editor-at-large for Vogue Nippon (a.k.a. Vogue Japan), has landed in Toronto at last—to much fanfare—for a special appearance at The Bay on Queen with equally adored style snapper Tommy Ton. We’ve got to hand it to ADR, because the caps-lock queen hasn’t been in town long enough to climb the CN Tower, yet she’s already scooping up envy-inducing one-of-a-kinds, like an Erdem-designed Hudson’s Bay jacket, which we thought was strictly available at A List–only Colette in Paris (France, not Ontario). Her agenda: a meet-and-greet with her cult of followers at The Room on Thursday and an industry insider’s fete and photo exhibition later tonight. A trip to Holt Renfrew is not yet planned. See Dello Russo’s one-of-a-kind gift in a gallery below.

Meet Tommy Ton and Anna Dello Russo at The Bay

On the fringe of fashion: Anna Dello Russo and Tommy Ton

We mentioned that Tommy Ton and Anna Dello Russo would be hosting an exhibit at Queen West’s Hudson’s Bay flagship this month, but what we didn’t say is that the event has become a public affair. Organizers have announced an hour-long meet-and-greet for fans at The Bay on April 21 from 11 a.m to noon at The Room on the third floor. Ton and Dello Russo and lovers can get autographs or simply check out the exhibition of 81 photos, titled ”When Tommy Met Anna.” We’ll be at the party the night before. It’s basically the same thing: there are lines to talk to the duo, only Suzanne Rogers is there and we drink champagne instead of VitaminWater.

Holt Renfrew’s cavalcade of Canadian design at LG Fashion Week’s opening night

Step, pivot, step, step (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Bloor Street West may have lost its mayor, but fans of the hot pink bag arrived at LG Fashion Week’s opening ceremonies last night to support Holt Renfrew’s showcase of Canadian design. Robin Kay opened the festivities with her traditionally laboured speech, this time remarking on the heart and tenacity found within Toronto’s fashion quarters. “We have no excuse but to expose ourselves to the world,” Kay declared. (We were grateful that this did not prompt her to remove her clothing.) See our full photo and scene coverage below.

The Bay nabs Anna Dello Russo, Tommy Ton and the face of Material Girl, Kelly Osbourne

A sparkling example of fashion (Image: Kathrin-Thuy OTTO)

Just when we thought The Bay couldn’t get bigger or spend more money, this week it announced three major visitors: Anna Dello Russo and Tommy Ton on April 20, and Kelly Osbourne on April 27. Dello Russo and Ton will present a collection of images titled “When Tommy Met Anna,” a showcase of the photographer’s street-style snaps taken from past seasons. We can’t wait to celebrate Kelly Osbourne’s new role as the face of Madonna’s Material Girl label. Looks like Osbourne is adding posing and endorsement to the illustrious body of work she has accumulated since her failed Alphaville knock-off.

Designers versus bloggers: this edition’s showdown pits Nolan Bryant against Kirk Pickersgill

Left: Karolina Kurkova and Nolan Bryant in Berlin; right: Kirk Pickersgill (Images: Nolan Bryant and Felix Wong)

The professional fashion scene in Toronto is made up of many members: designers, editors, PR flaks and, much to everyone else’s chagrin, bloggers. Once the awkward stepchildren of the scene, they’ve now risen to front-row fixtures. In the run-up to the runway action this month at LG Fashion Week, we wanted to check in with some of the city’s best designers—from the up-and-comers to the respected old captains—as well as Toronto’s fashion bloggers to ask some burning questions: are there rivalries? Secret alliances? Are they working together or falling apart? Read on for inspiring pro-fashion spirit and grudge matches galore.

Jeanne Beker and Evan Biddell walk in Bustle show, but Robin Kay steals the spotlight

Robin Kay gave a strange speech before the Bustle show (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

By Thursday’s final Bustle show, the closer of LG Fashion Week, most of the celebutantes had left the Exhibition grounds on their way to fashion parties, like the Women X Women exhibit at Thrush Holmes Empire and Tommy Ton’s, featuring model Agyness Deyn, at Studio Gallery. But before the show began, Robin Kay stood behind a velvet rope on the runway and gave an incoherent speech, in which she announced that she had become the publisher of Flare and Elle and the host of Fashion Television. Then she sat down. April Fool?

Kay’s a hard act to follow, but Bustle—best known for putting on local celeb–filled spectacles—made a go of it. Last season, Rick Mercer and Shinan Govani walked the runway; this year, Bustle enlisted such fashion notables as Jeanne Beker, designer Evan Biddell, model Stacey McKenzie and hairstylist Jie Matar to participate. Beker held court on a couch, tweeting on her BlackBerry, while the others stomped down the catwalk. Biddell walked out to a roar of applause and grabbed his crotch for the cameras, but when Matar came out in sunglasses, perhaps unrecognizable, the cheers had died down.

Toronto society turns out for the Joe Fresh show and celeb model Crystal Renn

Model Crystal Renn (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Joe Fresh Style, as we all know, is the show to see and be seen at each season. And, since it conveniently follows the Pink Tartan show (conveniently designed by Mrs. Joe Fresh, Kimberley Newport-Mimran), most of fashionable Toronto society—Galen Jr. and Alexandra Weston, Lynda Reeves, Tommy Ton, Jian Ghomeshi, Tanya Kim, Trevor Born, Susur Lee and so on—turned up to have their photo taken by George Pimentel, their names bold-faced by Shinan Govani and to pledge allegiance to the Mimran fan club. A big-name model always opens Joe; this year, it was the very gorgeous, very trendy and very famous “plus-size” model Crystal Renn (quotation marks are necessary, since Renn was hardly any larger than the other models) and one of the faces of the ’90s grunge scene, Kirsten Owen. Oh, there were clothes, too (view them in our slide show below), but who goes to Joe for the clothes, anyway?

Thirteen-year-old makes Flare editor cry, H&M organic line is not organic, Jimmy Choo emulates Tommy Ton

• Are Tommy Ton and Jimmy Choo starring in the sequel to Single White Female? Ton thinks so. Earlier this morning, Toronto’s famed street-style snapper pointed an accusing finger at the luxury shoe company when he tweeted, “Is it me or does the Jimmy Choo 24:7 campaign look a lot like…ahem…you know what I mean :S.” Truth be told, it doesn’t take much inspection to see the striking similarities between the images Ton shoots for his blog, Jak and Jil, and Choo’s new campaign. [Fashionista]

• Fashion editors were appalled when 13-year-old blogger Tavi Gevinson sat front row at the Dior couture show, wearing a gargantuan bow atop her head. Flare editor Lisa Tant tweeted, “Sobbing to think that a 13-year-old gets a front-row seat to cover couture. No justice in this world.” Meanwhile, Jeanne Beker took to Twitter, calling Gevinson’s bow “outrageous.” Both women later said their comments were taken out of context. Apparently “outrageous” is a good thing in the fashion world, but burning bridges is not. [Mondoville]
