Zagat’s 2012 survey picks Toronto’s best restos and settles that pesky average tipping question

Scaramouche’s Keith Froggett (Image: Renée Suen)

Online restaurant review sites like Yelp and Urbanspoon may have cut into the crowd-sourced territory that Zagat once owned, but the yearly survey still has some clout—and the power to get diners in the door. The 2,266 food-loving Torontonians who voted in this year’s survey were crazy for Keith Froggett, giving fine dining restaurant Scaramouche top honours for food and also placing Scaramouche’s pasta bar in the top 10. But the winners weren’t all about linen tablecloths and tasting menus: The Burger’s Priest, with its epically greasy Vatican City burger, broke the top three for best food, while pan-Asian chain Spring Rolls was voted most popular restaurant (proving that democracy isn’t foolproof).

Patrick Chan (Image: Queen Yuna)

Toronto-based figure skater Patrick Chan is all about making Canadians feel warm and fuzzy. First he gave us heartwarming McDonald’s advertisements, and now he’s skating for a cause. The Canadian champion is set to perform at the Oshawa Skating Club’s Ice Show at the GM Centre on Saturday night, his last public appearance before the world championships, scheduled for April 24.

Toronto ranked 78th priciest city in the world for expats

Torontonians love to complain about every costly entity from real estate to Ticketmaster, but according to the most recent Mercer Cost of Living Survey, Hogtown is cheap compared to most big cities. Toronto was ranked 78th in the survey of over 214 cities across five continents. It measured expenses on over 200 items like housing, transport, food, clothing and entertainment. Urban centres in East Asia and Africa figured prominently on the list, with Luanda, Angola taking the top spot followed by Tokyo, Japan and N’Djamena, Chad. Toronto came in well behind two of its main North American counterparts New York (27) and Los Angeles (55) as well as Vancouver (75). Montreal trailed at 98 and Ottawa at 136.

Lindsay Lohan as Jesus, Abercrombie store scares Japanese shoppers, Tavi talks back

Lilo's Purple cover

Armani Exchange’s Share the Love Valentine’s Day campaign, which features steamy photos of same-sex couples, has angered the American Family Association, which expressed its displeasure on its Web site onemillionmoms.com. The organization, which aims to rid society of “filth,” calls the ads “poison” to children and urges other parents to “take a stand since A|X is one of the fashion leaders and this is becoming a popular trend.” We’re outraged—Armani Exchange is not a fashion leader. [The Cut]

• Controversial teen fashion blogger and Jeanne Beker stand-in Tavi Gevinson responded to the recent criticisms that have been levelled at her, her big hats and her parents. The gist? Bring it. “I’m going to New York on Saturday. I will be wearing some more hats. If you happen to be sitting behind me and you’d like to be able to see, just ask.” Let’s hope the Fashion Television cameras are rolling. [Style Rookie]

Sarah Palin invokes God while defending meat eating, Timothy’s World Coffee sold, the $1-million cow

• Sarah Palin takes aim at vegetarians in her highly anticipated memoir, Going Rogue. The moose-hunting former governor’s justification for being a meat eater: “If God had not intended for us to eat animals, how come He made them out of meat?” Perhaps Palin should present her infallible logic to Hillary Clinton over carnivorous scones when the two meet for coffee. • Paris no longer reigns supreme as the Michelin star capital of the world. With 11 three-star restaurants, Tokyo has inched ahead of the City of Light, which houses a meagre 10. Some observers say that comparing the two cities isn’t fair, as Tokyo is home to about 160,000 restaurants—about four times as many as Paris. [Bloomberg]
