TIFF PHOTO GALLERY: Maggie Gyllenhaal talks about the female experience at the press conference for Hysteria

The press conference for Hysteria, which chronicles the invention of the vibrator, elicited giggles, guffaws, awkward pauses and perhaps even a gleeful sense of empowerment for many of the women in the room. Director Tanya Wexler sounded raspy, and she noted the irony in the fact that the director of a film about female empowerment had lost her voice. “What were you doing down there?” was a common inquiry of actors Hugh Dancy and Jonathan Pryce, who play the doctors who must pleasure women to relieve them of their “hysteria.” Dancy’s curt answer: “Acting.” Pryce revealed that he got a stress injury in his hand and lost the skin on a finger from all of the rubbing, and that he wasn’t touching an actual woman but rather a “modesty sandbag.” Dancy also revealed he visited a sex museum in Shanghai in preparation for the role. “You really had to take their word [that the artifact was a sex toy]. You look at it and think, that’s just a rock.”

TIFF PHOTO GALLERY: James Gandolfini, Saoirse Ronan and Alexis Bledel on the red carpet for the gala presentation of Violet and Daisy

When James Gandolfini walks the red carpet, he does so like Tony Soprano: he gets in, gets the job done and gets out (but he still makes his presence felt—when an older woman asked for a photo, he responded, “Get in here, Momma!”). Also making their presence felt as they walked the red carpet for Violet and Daisy were a pair of young starlets—Saoirse Ronan and Alexis Bledel—who play teenage assassins in the film. The duo complemented each other splendidly—Ronan in a seafoam knee-length pleated dress and Bledel in a black and gold number strangely reminiscent of a ’70s Star Trek uniform (we still think it worked).

TIFF PHOTO GALLERY: Maggie Gyllenhaal and Hugh Dancy on the red carpet for the gala presentation of Hysteria

Considering Hysteria is a film about vibrators, the premiere’s red carpet last night at Roy Thompson Hall was a surprisingly modest affair. Director Tanya Wexler appeared uncomfortable in front of the cameras and was rushed inside without signing any autographs (although she did wave to fans, yelling, “Hi Canada!” and “Sorry” as her PR people ushered her out of the spotlight). Hugh Dancy, whose immaculate beard has been getting rave reviews, arrived with a smile. Jonathan Pryce gave one of the most dignified and professional red carpet performances we’ve seen so far at the festival, gazing directly into each camera and laughing it off when a cheeky photographer accidentally called him “Vincent.” Then, of course, there was Maggie Gyllenhaal, elegantly dressed head to toe in white. She did have to be prompted to remove a long black blazer, but in her defense it was freezing. Under the shining spotlights of CityTV’s cameras, subtle streaks of grey were visible in her up-do. Gyllenhaal lets her greys show! She’s the real deal, and we love her for it. See our photo gallery, after the jump.

TIFF PHOTO GALLERY: Nicolas Cage has the assembled media eating out of his hand at the press conference for Joel Schumacher’s Trespass

When Nicolas Cage is in the room, it’s impossible to look anywhere else (really). From the moment he sat down, answering questions about Joel Schumacher’s Trespass with a degree of intensity and thoughtfulness that we’re sure surprised many, all eyes were fixed on the actor. He delivered lines from the film in character, did his best impression of Werner Herzog and playfully shared the story the film is predicated upon: “I woke up and there was a naked man wearing my leather jacket and eating a Fudgsicle at the foot of my bed. It sounds funny, but it wasn’t.”

On night three of Festival Music House, it was indie rock madness with The Arkells and Hey Rosetta!

Parlovr getting into it at Festival Music House (Image: J.J. Thompson)

Last night wrapped up the final eve of Festival Music House at TIFF, and much like the two nights before it, the booze was flowing and the bands gave it their all. Festival Music House curators Arts&Crafts (the label that brought us Broken Social Scene, The Stills, Timber Timbre and Jason Collett to name a few) did a great job creating unique lineups with different themes each night, with Monday’s performances appealing to a more mainstream crowd, Tuesday’s country and folk influence and last night’s indie rock thread with The Darcys, Parlovr, Hey Rosetta!, The Rural Alberta Advantage and headliners The Arkells. Check out who showed up and rocked out, after the jump.

TIFF PHOTO GALLERY: Nicolas Cage walks the red carpet for Joel Schumacher’s Trespass

After charming the assembled press corps with tales of a naked man eating a Fudgsicle in his bed at the press conference for Trespass, Nicolas Cage charmed his screaming fans at the red carpet at Roy Thomson Hall for the new Joel Schumacher flick, signing autographs the entire length of the carpet from underneath an umbrella. Seriously, Cage is a charmer (and, frankly, we’re kind of surprised). Unfortunately, his co-star in the film, Nicole Kidman, wasn’t in attendance (she’s currently shooting another picture in the U.S.). But no matter, Cage and Schumacher managed to delight fans without her. See our photo gallery, after the jump.

Nicolas Cage is a sad wine drinker and Maggie Gyllenhaal wears sweatpants at the Soho Metropolitan Hotel last night

Nicolas Cage (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Outside of the Soho Metropolitan Hotel, fans gathered to catch a glimpse of Nicolas Cage at his Trespass after-party, and to be perfectly honest, most of the action was happening outside of the Euro beat–heavy clubland inside. We spotted Hysteria’s Maggie Gyllenhaal in “couture” sweatpants and glasses exiting an elevator, seeming eager to distance herself from the afternoons-in-Ibiza party that was happening in the hotel (she was staying there), but apart from these two star sightings, the biggest name we spotted was Massari. Check out the scene and find out what desperate measures some partygoers took to see Cage after the jump.

ET Canada’s sixth birthday party is the least TIFF-y of all TIFF parties

Natalie Brown (Image: Lia Parsley)

As the Hollywood set celebrated last night with parties for Butter, Interview magazine and InStyle, our homegrown Canadian talent came out for ET Canada’s sixth birthday bash at Spice Route. The cast of Rookie Blue and Lost Girl, everyone’s favourite contractor Mike Holmes, Call Me Fitz’s affable Tracy Dawson, Molly Parker, Natalie Brown, the Trailer Park Boys, Alexandra Holden (we know her best as anorexic beauty queen Mary Johanson from Drop Dead Gorgeous), ET Canada hosts and L.A. transplant Matte Babel all walked the red carpet—some better than others (namely, Natalie Brown and her impressive at-camera eye squints)—in honour of the entertainment news source’s special day. Check out the red carpet after the jump.

Interview magazine and Joe Fresh host a rooftop party for Like Crazy’s Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin

Anton Yelchin (Image: Sam Santos/Wireimage)

Interview magazine, Joe Fresh and Paramount Productions hosted an invite-only soiree last night at the Spoke Club rooftop, where the Joe Fresh–orange cocktails were flowing and everyone was loose, including Like Crazy cast members Felicity Jones and Anton Yelchin. It was a party without George Clooney and Ryan Gosling, or other faces we’ve grown tired of this week, yet it grew larger by the second and saw Jason Reitman and Jessica Chastain pass through—even Kimberley Newport-Mimran, fresh off a plane after a Pink Tartan show at New York Fashion Week, was seen laughing with husband Joe (or Mr. Fresh to his closest friends). Newport-Mimran gave us the scoop on her menswear line Black Tartan, which will be debuting in her Yorkville store very soon. That’s an actual fact— something there aren’t many of in the typical “Toronto is so much friendlier than New York” responses that journalists usually get from interviews during TIFF. Pics of the party guests and their thoughts about Toronto after the jump.

TIFF PHOTO GALLERY: Jennifer Garner and Olivia Wilde walk the red carpet for Butter

The gala presentation of Butter at Roy Thomson Hall last night was all about the ladies. Little Yara Shahidi kicked off the proceeds at the most packed and frenetic red carpet since Madge walked here on Monday, and she was downright adorable, giggling at the barrage of flashes and the demands of fans who claimed to have been lining the barricades since 5 a.m. Ashley Greene came next in a swish knee-length silver number, but was—dare we say it—outshone by Olivia Wilde, who was stunning in a floor-length white and gold gown (we’re not sure if it was intentional, but she did appear to be channelling Diane Krugers character in Troy). The only fellas worth mentioning at this affair were director Jim Field Smith and writer Jason Micallef. Sadly, Hugh Jackman couldn’t make it to the Big Smoke for this year’s festival, but Alicia Silverstone helped make up for it, although we figure it must be annoying to still be signing eight-by-10s of herself as Cher Horowitz from Clueless. Of course, Jennifer Garner also graced the red carpet, sporting two of this year’s most popular accessories: epically high heels and a baby bump. See our photo gallery, after the jump.

TIFF PHOTO GALLERY: Adam Brody, Greta Gerwig and Analeigh Tipton join Whit Stillman at the red carpet for Damsels in Distress

Adam Brody, Greta Gerwig, Analeigh Tipton and Carrie MacLemore on the red carpet for Whit Stillman’s new film (Image: Lia Grainger)

The wind whipping down Yonge Street yesterday afternoon wreaked havoc on the hemlines of the Damsels in Distress ladies, in the most delightful way. Carrie MacLemore was the first to arrive, her flouncy grey knee-length frock bouncing in the breeze, and seemed quite tickled to be walking the carpet for her feature film debut. Mumblecore queen Greta Gerwig strolled by in black and didn’t pose for a single solo shot (earning a few enemies in the photo pit) while a very slender Analeigh Tipton playfully blew kisses at the cameras in a long, sheer number. Adam Brody cut a dashing figure in a skinny black suit with a matching tie and curls, and the man of the hour, director Whit Stillman—this is his first film since The Last Days of Disco in 1998—played down the buzz by posing only briefly for a group photo. But if anything says a film is one to watch, it’s the arrival of Roger Ebert and his wife Chaz at the premiere. Ebert, who has undergone many serious surgeries for thyroid cancer over the past decade, seemed in good spirits, smiling for photographers, who for once didn’t yell for eye contact, but rather whispered hushed thank-yous to the legendary critic.

The Burroughes party brings Butter’s stars—hello, Jennifer Garner (with baby bump) and Olivia Wilde—not butterfaces

It was ladies’ night at the Burroughes VitaminWater party for Butter, where the film’s stars Jennifer Garner, Ashley Greene, Olivia Wilde and Alicia Silverstone all came out before their premiere at Roy Thompson Hall. The film is about a Midwest U.S. town’s annual butter carving contest (don’t knock it—Toronto is also known to carve butter at the Royal Winter Fair), so naturally there was a butter sculptor. The carver, in what we’re sure is regulation costume for such an event, wore the shortest skirt we’ve ever seen outside of the Brass Rail, complete with a very low-cut top, which of course served as a beacon for the suits in attendance.  Get a close up of Butter’s knockout stars in a gallery after the jump.

Kathy Griffin swears a lot and Kim Cattrall sells the clothes off her back at this year’s Cinema Against AIDS gala

Kim Cattrall at the Cinema Against AIDS gala (Image: courtesy of amfAR)

Last night, The Carlu played host to the third annual Cinema Against AIDS event in support of amfAR and Dignitas International. Though the star wattage wasn’t overly bright by TIFF standards, it didn’t stop a throng of gawkers from taking over the Yonge Street median to get a glimpse of celebs like 30 Rock guest star Cheyenne Jackson, Kim Cattrall, designer Kenneth Cole, the evening’s emcee Kathy Griffin and singer John Legend. We learned the phrase “swears like a sailor” is an understatement in the presence of Griffin, who dropped F-bombs at every opportunity (we stopped counting around number 30)—the self-styled D-list star blew our evening of curses with Susie Essman at the Astral party out of the water. Find out how Cattrall raised more money at this year’s Cinema Against AIDS gala after the jump.

Channing Tatum carries his wife up a flight of stairs and Justin Long gets fashion help from a hotel concierge

Channing Tatum and Scott Porter (Image: Alexandra Wyman)

The Ten Year dinner at the Grey Goose Soho House may have started at the early-bird time of 5:30 p.m., but it didn’t stop the film’s stars Channing Tatum, Kate Mara, Scott Porter and Justin Long from showing up. Tatum carried wife Jenna Dewan up the first flight of stairs—An Officer and a Gentleman style—because her fuchsia Zac Posen dress was too tight. Tatum didn’t dig into the spread of prosciutto, risotto (served in the biggest Parmesan wheel we’ve ever seen) and roast beef, or even take in any of the generously poured drinks—instead he drank from an enormous water bottle (hey, he’s got to keep in shape in case he ever makes another Step Up movie). Find out who else showed up to the party after the jump.
