Chris Nuttall-Smith takes on La Société, Charles Khabouth’s sexy, buzzy French bistro

La Société

Four million dollars buys a lot of restaurant, even on Bloor Street, at the heart of the city’s richest retail mile. Charles Khabouth, the nightclub impresario behind La Société, the new, two-storey, 380-seat, more or less slavish recreation of a belle époque Paris bistro, brought in 29 tile workers, many of them from Montreal, to complete the spectacularly elaborate black, white and gold mosaic floors in the restaurant’s main bar and dining room. He and Alessandro Munge, of the Munge Leung design firm, commissioned a stained-glass ceiling for the bistro’s main space (which they’ve backlit, inexcusably, with sallow fluorescent lights), purchased their zinc bar top from France, outfitted the banquettes in brass and burgundy leather, and panelled the room in enough mahogany to deforest the best-endowed of banana republics. The rent, meantime, likely adds $2 million annually to Khabouth’s overhead. He’ll need to sell a lot of steak frites to cover that, but the man isn’t afraid to go big.

Introducing: Café Belong, Brad Long’s new restaurant at the Brick Works

Brad Long’s new restaurant at the Brick Works is called Café Belong—get it? (Image: Gizelle Lau)

After almost half a year of delays, Brad Longs Café Belong finally opened at the Evergreen Brick Works on Saturday morning, to throngs of farmers’ market shoppers. Long is well established in the Toronto food scene, as a co-owner of Veritas and a previous executive chef for Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment and the CN Tower’s 360 restaurant (he’s of course also familiar from Food Network Canada’s Restaurant Makeover). “We were looking for someone who would be able to create and cater to a community fostering local food,” Brick Works programming director Arlene Stein told us. “Brad was a perfect fit.”

Introducing: 416 Snack Bar, Queen West’s newest spot for cosmopolitan late-night grub

(Image: Jon Sufrin)

With the recent arrival of such hot spots as The Hideout, Tattoo Rock Parlour and Barchef, the Queen and Bathurst area has seen a boom in late-night hangout options (with the notable exception of the  Bip Bop Big Bop’s closure). But a few steps north on Bathurst used to mean immediate entry into a nightlife dead zone. At least, that was before Adrian Ravinsky and David Stewart opened 416 Snack Bar on Monday, bringing with them a cosmopolitan menu of palm-sized grub options.

Looking back at TIFF 2010: Nick Di Donato on how to throw a film festival party

Rick Campanelli hangs out at ET Canada's parking garage party

Nick Di Donato, president and CEO of Liberty Entertainment Group, is sitting in his newest Yorkville restaurant, Ciao, where just days ago Bill Gates broke bread with John Legend. Four storeys above is the parking lot that was transformed for four days into Entertainment Tonight Canada’s Festival Central, where a fab four-party weekend took place, all under Di Donato’s direction. The man behind the Rosewater Supper Club, Tattoo Rock Parlour, Spice Route and C Lounge—just to scratch the surface of his empire—and veteran of 15 TIFFs reflects on film festival parties past and present.

Spotted: Josh Brolin, Paul Haggis and Javier Bardem at Av and Dav

Click on the map to see all TIFF celebrity sightings

On our way home last night, we decided, on a lark, to check out the Toro After Dark space at Pears on Avenue Road. No official events were scheduled, but we thought it the perfect low-key come-down after the insanity of Slash’s appearance at Tattoo Rock Parlour. Imagine our surprise, then, to find Josh Brolin being escorted into the space with Paul Haggis. Smart phones lit up the room and tweets about the unlikely celeb sighting flooded the Internet. Little did the crowd know that the best was yet to come.

Slash parties at Tattoo Rock Parlour with a troupe of bodyguards

Doesn't he get sick of the hat? (Image: Fraser Abe)

When we heard that Slash, the epic rock icon from Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver was “hosting” (read: sitting in a private booth and drinking) a night at Tattoo Rock Parlour, we jumped on the chance to get a glimpse of the man who gave the world “November Rain.” Rumoured to arrive at midnight, he didn’t show until around 1 a.m. (natch, he’s a rock star) and we were a bit unnerved by the hour of waiting with throngs of kids too young to even remember GN’R, dancing madly to each successive song and delivering louder and louder group “wooos.”

From the Archives: a look back on TIFF’s most memorable moments

Oh, Snap
This month, the Toronto International Film Festival celebrates its 35th year with a glossy new home in the Bell Lightbox. Much has changed since the inaugural year, when Hollywood studios turned up their noses at the fledging fest. Then again, much hasn’t. It’s still two weeks of celebrities and fans behaving badly. Here, a look back on TIFF’s most memorable moments, from the coke-fuelled ’70s to the paparazzi-riddled oughties.

Toronto mom claims Canada’s ultimate MILF prize

Alison Brown (Image: Lisa Brown Gallery)

Toronto artist Alison Brown took home the Miss Cougar Canada Crown on Friday at a pageant held at Tattoo Rock Parlour. Brown, who is the curator of the Lisa Brown Gallery, wins a week’s vacation at the Hedonism II Resort and Spa in Jamaica, and a chance to compete for international hot mama fame at the International Cougar Cruise in December. A giggly Brown told the Canadian Press via CTV that although she was very direct in asking the male attendees at the pageant to hand her their contest coins—the woman with the most wins the title—she’s not on the prowl at the moment. “I’ve dated some younger guys but it’s not like I’m out there lecherously looking for young boys…I’ve got two teenage sons. I’ve got to be careful,” she said.

Rock bands cancel campaign gig when they find out it’s for Mammoliti

Giorgio Mammoliti (Image: toronto.ca)

Mayoral candidate Giorgio Mammoliti’s camp is scrambling to find a new lineup for next Wednesday’s Rock the Vote night at Tattoo Rock Parlour. Headliner The Darcys pulled out after learning they’d be playing in support of his campaign, writing on their blog that they were initially told the event was a benefit for Sheridan College:

We do not know Mammoliti personally, but we know that his politics have opposed Bill 167, which extends spousal benefits to same-sex couples. Though we do not endorse a specific candidate in the mayoral race, we cannot support Mammoliti. We are sorry for the confusion but hope you can sympathize with our predicament.

For Ciao Wine Bar, its newest high-octane hub, the Liberty Entertainment Group has shaken up the formula that has served them well at Rosewater, Spice Route and Tattoo Rock Parlour: one part dinner, two parts party is being replaced with two parts dinner, one part party. “We’re diversifying our portfolio,” says CEO Nick Di Donato, who tapped his Neapolitan roots to give Ciao an authentic Italian feel (he added a pinch of South Beach for good measure).

Whip It good: Drew Barrymore and Ellen Page at Tattoo Rock Parlour

Rock 'n' roller debry: performers prepare for the Whip It after party (Photo by Jen McNeely)

Rock ’n’ roller derby: performers prepare for the Whip It after-party (Photo by Jen McNeely)

Roller derby chicks whirled around a TTC streetcar outside Tattoo Rock Parlour on Queen West on Sunday, giving the red carpet crowd a terrific tease for the arrival of director Drew Barrymore and homegrown sweetheart Ellen Page to the Whip It after-party. Blaring classic rock tunes and serving up mac and cheese, this was a Hollywood party with a dirty, down-home feel. We stood in line to get a Whip It tattoo branded on our arm and chatted up some of the real-deal derby girls before sneaking into the VIP section to hang with—well, adjacent to—Drew, Ellen, Jason Reitman and Justin Long.

Drew Barrymore ditches her Whip It after-party for Sweaty Betty’s

Drew Barrymore behind the bar at Sweaty Betty's

Still a wild child, Drew Barrymore ditched her own party for Whip It (see the red carpet photos here) at Tattoo Rock Parlour for Ossington’s Sweaty Betty’s. We knew that she had been before so pre-TIFF, we chatted with owner Pol-Cristo Williams. “If Drew came back, I wouldn’t be surprised,” he told us. “She had a great time.” It was this quote we remembered when we watched Barrymore, Ellen Page and Justin Long shuffle down the graffiti back alley of Tattoo and pile in an SUV. With no verification, we decided to chance it.
