Sunny Fong launches Vawkkin (like, akin to Vawk—get it?)

Vawkkin sketches (Image: Sunny Fong)

Sunny Fong, Project Runway Canada alum and designer of Vawk, is expanding his clothing line with a diffusion label called Vawkkin, proving it has been a big year for the Toronto designer: he just dressed Elisha Cuthbert, star of Happy Endings (though we prefer to remember her as the girl from Popular Mechanics for Kids), for the People’s Choice Awards, on top of showing another successful season at Toronto Fashion Week. Vawkkin will be a cheaper collection than Vawk, geared toward the “young professional fashion-forward female” in a palette of blacks and neutrals. It’s exciting to see a young Canadian designer with so much demand that he has to start a more affordable line, so we look forward to see what Vawkkin will look like. A preview of the fall/winter collection will happen sometime this spring. We’re just going to start an unsubstantiated rumour that Cuthbert will be walking in the show right now (we can’t promise anything).

POLL: Elisha Cuthbert wears Canadian to the People’s Choice Awards, but does she do it justice?

Last night was the People’s Choice Awards, and sadly, we were not tapped to be among the people choosing. We did however spot Elisha Cuthbert wearing something from Sunny Fong’s Vawk 2012 resort collection. In the laser-cut bodice and long maxi skirt, we think she looks quite lovely, if not ready for watching some Greco Roman–style wrestling. Has Elisha Cuthbert offended your senses, or did she inspire you to buy Canadian? Take our poll after the jump.

A lot of mesh panelling, sexy cut-out swimsuits and flowing full-bodied skirts at Vawk’s spring/summer 2012 runway

TORONTO FASHION WEEK | SEE ALL Sunny Fong brought his Vawk collection to Toronto Fashion Week after showing for many seasons at the AGO, closing yesterday’s festivities. This season’s theme, Insectica, had models sporting long, fluttery eyelashes and maxi dresses with prints that resembled monarch butterflies, and although outfits were dubbed “beetle dress” and “moth tank,” we didn’t see much else that related to the theme. Gold was everywhere—we spotted it on laser-cut leather details adorning black dresses and as an accent to greyish-blue mini dresses. We loved Fong’s full-bodied pleated skirts (one was so long that a model almost took a tumble on the catwalk), a white overcoat with gold buttons and tails and sexy one-piece bathing suits with cut-outs. Find out what went wrong and check out a fully gallery of Sunny Fong’s spring/summer 2012 collection after the jump.

Sunny Fong’s details wow the audience on night four of LG Fashion Week

A sunny Fong takes care of his models (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Just when we thought the celebs had left the building, we spotted Corner Gas’s Tara Spencer-Nairn sauntering in for Vawk by Sunny Fong on the Thursday evening of LG Fashion Week. Spencer-Nairn is a cheerleader for Canadian design, consistently showing up to shows like this one and becoming a makeshift socialite in the process (though can you truly be a socialite if you’re gainfully employed?). Fong is known for playing with texture; in previous seasons he’s used laser-cut details as well as petals cut and sewn by hand. This fall/winter set is no different. See the amazing details after the jump.

PHOTO GALLERY: see Vawk’s fall/winter 2011 collection

This model did not fall (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

In past seasons, Sunny Fong has opted to show his Vawk collection to a small group of editors and friends at the Art Gallery of Ontario, but last night he chose to tear the roof off Heritage Court. Fong showed an assortment of detail-heavy designs that made the crowd swoon, and we think it was worth the potential harm to a couple of models who nearly slipped on the runway (though they likely think differently). See the full rundown of the collection below.

Fashion Week Recap: our 10 favourite looks

Fashion week—the only time of year when it’s OK to judge a book by its cover—is over for another season. This season, we saw some impressive clothing from young designers (Amanda Lew Kee, Sunny Fong, Thomas and Chloé Comme Parris among them), a standout collection from Montreal’s Denis Gagnon, and ’70s-inspired looks from Pink Tartan. We lusted after Line’s knits and leathers, and considered wearing a black wedding dress at Romona Keveza. Holt Renfrew brought its favourite Canadian talent—including Toronto native Jeremy Laing—to the runway. We’ve compiled our favourite looks from these memorable fashion shows in this slide show. Amanda Lew Kee: a 21-year-old designer making her mark in Toronto fashion

(Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Amanda Lew Kee, recent university grad and first-time LG Fashion Week participant, showed her spring 2011 collection on Friday, the last day of shows. Riding the buzz of her Ryerson Mass Exodus show in April (in which fourth-year fashion students present their collections), the designer had the place swarmed. The presentation was designated a “petite marquee” (where they cover up the top rows of seating), but organizers had to add extra seats for guests clamouring to get a look.

Models wearing Lew Kee’s trademark ice blue lipstick (even FDCC doyenne Robin Kay donned it in solidarity) walked in zippered everything—the sleeves of jackets, the cap sleeves of dresses, and down the front of the minis. The gals who wear Lew Kee are young, like the designer, who’s 21. It takes guts (not to mention a great bod) to wear the revealingly high-slit sheer two-tone maxis or the navel-skimming jackets. We’ve seen newbie designers’ (Sunny Fong and Evan Biddell come to mind) collections grow stronger with each season, and with her first major show under her belt, we look forward to Lew Kee’s future offerings.

Once again, Sunny Fong casts diverse models for his Vawk show

(Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Vawk designer Sunny Fong debuted his spring-summer 2011 collection in one of our favourite venues: the AGO’s grand and airy Walker Court. The theme, Toro Safari, mixed elements of Spain and Africa, even down to the seating arrangements—Fong had everyone sitting in concentric circles, as in a bullfighting arena. African influences were evident in the giant saucer earrings models wore (which Fong crafted from leather, then appliquéd with silvery foil), the embossed crocodile print jackets and the slim safari pants. (Sure, a woman couldn’t traipse around the Sahara in these outfits, but she’d be the most fashionable at African Lion Safari.) The nude and cream colour palette was a bit, well, beige, but we liked the shock of the fuchsia-fringed mini in the middle of the show. As in seasons past, Fong hired models of different body types and ages, giving spectators a chance to see the clothes on women other than glamazon automatons.

More fur at fashion week from Sunny Fong

(Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

It seems that fur has become no big deal in Canadian fashion this season, with Jeremy Laing, Greta Constantine and Izma all using it fearlessly. Yesterday, Sunny Fong (who’ll be forever referred to as the Project Runway Canada season two winner) made full use of the North American Fur Association by adorning outfits with fur lapels, collars, cuffs and hems for his Vawk line. Though Fong’s inspiration for his Collision Fungi collection, “the beauty of decay and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow,” reminded us more of an OCAD artist statement, the designer took a big step from last season. We particularly liked the leather skirts and luxe coats trimmed with fur; the slim-fitting trousers with an extra flap of fabric to resemble riding pants; and leather skirts with padding at the hips. Both looks echo a spring trend of playing with hip proportions. Look for such fellow PRC alums as Evan Biddell and Lucian Matis later in the week.

Evan Biddell’s top-secret fashion week plans

Biddell used cellphones as accessories last season (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

One week before LG fashion week, Evan Biddell, winning designer of the premiere season of Project Runway Canada, and his business partner, photographer Joseph Fuda, will open Oz Studio Boutique on Ossington. Biddell has commissioned well-known stylist Peter Papapetrou to help display his wares and invited media and friends to attend the March 16 opening.

But Biddell’s collection is currently absent from the fashion week lineup, and the designer has said he won’t comment on whether Oz has affected his involvement until the store opens its doors. We got in touch with the Fashion Design Council of Canada, which organizes fashion week, who told us that Biddell would be participating, but the show may not be a traditional one. Reality television alumni Lucian Matis, Jessica Biffi and Brandon Dwyer have all been slotted in for the weekly catwalk shows in the meantime, though PRC alums Sunny Fong and Jason Meyers, who both showed last season, are also absent.

Sunny Fong’s Vawk collection opens fashion week at the AGO

A smattering of the city’s socialites, fashion editors and Project Runway contestants (is it just us, or has the PR crew taken over fashion week?) filed into the AGO yesterday afternoon for Sunny Fong’s Vawk show.

Titled Tattoo Hibiscus, the collection is Fong’s first post–reality TV offering and one of the most anticipated of fashion week. That’s because his PR collection last season was a standout against more experienced professionals, and the country’s fashion community has been eagerly awaiting his next move.

Though this was a small presentation of just 12 looks, the Walker Court setting was hardly humble. “Gorgeous AGO setting for the Vawk show,” tweeted Flare editor-in-chief Lisa Tant. “Wish all of fashion week was here. Bright, slick, impressive.” We were less impressed with the clothes.
