McEwan to open new Italian restaurant, still eyeing the downtown Travelodge for new supermarket location

The hugely successful McEwan supermarket at Shops at Don Mills is keeping Mark McEwan north of Bloor as he plans to open his fourth restaurant next May. Fabbrica, the Italian term for “fabricate,” will be what McEwan calls “a true to form, Grandma’s cooking, down on your knees” Italian restaurant serving roasted fish, Neapolitan pizza (made in wood-burning ovens) and pasta that’s made in-house. “We’ll also have a salami cellar,” McEwan says. “We’re not reinventing the wheel here, we’re just making good food.” The reason to stay uptown, he adds, is that “there’s a huge market up here, and I believe the market is under-serviced. There’s a calling for quality restaurants,” noting the abundance of chain restaurants in the area.

Just Opened: Joey Don Mills

Chris Mills: chef of all trades (Photo by Karon Liu)

Chris Mills: chef of all trades (Photo by Karon Liu)

At first we were hesitant to write about yet another big box “casual fine dining” establishment with dark wood decor, bleach-blond servers in form-fitting black uniforms and, of course, a menu that strives to be more ethnically diverse than a Benetton ad. But when we heard that the menu at Joey Don Mills was designed by Chris Mills, the 40-year-old chef who once placed fifth in the Bocuse d’Or and competed on the original Iron Chef, we dropped in at the first location, at the Shops at Don Mills, just to see what was up.

Just Opened: Murale launches its first Toronto location at the Shops at Don Mills

Murale1

Shoppers Drug Mart's luxe cosmetics and skincare retailer, Murale, is designed to tempt beauty junkies

Score another one for the Shops at Don Mills. The city’s first Murale store, Shoppers Drug Mart Corporation’s answer to Sephora, opened its doors at the centre last week, inviting members of the media for a tour and to try out some of the products. And as anyone who’s stepped inside Shoppers for toothpaste and ended up with a basket full of stuff knows, these people know how draw out dormant shopaholics.

Fire at new Glow restaurant causes two-week closure

Rose Reisman woke early last Thursday to talk about blueberry recipes on Canada AM. But when the restaurateur behind Glow Fresh Grill and Wine Bar checked her e-mail at around 4:30, there was a message from her restaurant manager; “Glow on fire” was the subject line.

“It was total disbelief,” said Reisman. “I literally felt sick to my stomach.” The three-week-old restaurant at the Shops at Don Mills became a charred mess after someone leaned a designer chair against a patio heater the night before. The large patio doors kept the fire from spreading into the dining room, but it was filled with enough smoke to warrant a heavy-duty cleaning.

Anthropologie now open in Yorkville

Downtowners have been waiting anxiously for Toronto’s second Anthropologie to open, and so it did, very quietly, last Friday (the grand opening is set for July 31). Located at 80 Yorkville Avenue, the two-floor store is 7,000 square feet of womenswear, accessories and home decor. We suggest heading over quickly, before the crowds descend.

In the meantime, check out our slide show of goodies from Toronto’s first Anthropologie store at the Shops at Don Mills here.

Supermarket heap: Gourmet grocers colonize the city

Grab and go: high-end groceries and prepared foods (like these at Market Longo) are suddenly everywhere (Photo by Davida Aronovitch)

There has been a sudden influx of gourmet grocers and grab-and-go eateries in Toronto. Many have been—or will be—created by the city’s elite restaurateurs and chefs in an effort to attract foodies who want to slash dining budgets without resorting to KD. Earlier this week, we reported that Oliver and Bonacini will offer a take-away service in the Bell Lightbox and that suburban staple Longo’s recently expanded its downtown holdings with a second Market Longo near Bay and Dundas. Sobeys opened another Urban Fresh store amid the condo forest surrounding Fort York, and top chef Mark McEwan is planning a downtown version of his eponymous grocery store at the Shops at Don Mills.

Chef Mark McEwan (North 44°, Bymark) gave us an exclusive tour of his eponymous grocery store at the Shops at Don Mills, just as the shelves were being stocked and excited employees were scanning products into the store database. The 20,000-square-foot space is predominantly occupied by counters serving charcuterie, baked goods, seafood and cheese, as well as shelves of house-made (there’s a large kitchen upstairs) sauces, pickled vegetables, soups and prepared meals made from McEwan’s restaurant recipes. There will also be a counter selling chocolates stocked by the Belgian chocolatier Galler, which McEwan discovered while vacationing in Florida a year and a half ago. The store will also be selling the chef’s new line of kitchenware.

Mark McEwan’s opens his grocery store this week (no, seriously)—and plans a second downtown location

Northern star: Mark McEwan will open his gourmet mega-store at The Shops at Don Mills this Thursday

Northern star: Mark McEwan will open his gourmet mega-store at The Shops at Don Mills this Thursday

After months of anticipation, Shops at Don Mills will finally get its gourmet grocer this Thursday, says Mark McEwan. We caught up with The Food Network star over the weekend as he was assembling seared tuna at Toronto Taste 2009 under the gaze of a camera crew. McEwan was supposed to open this Wednesday but computer problems lead to a 24-hour delay. Of course, the store was originally slated to open last January, so what’s one more day?

Inside Toronto’s first Anthropologie store

The opening of Anthropologie’s first Canadian outpost at the Shops at Don Mills was one of the most anticipated retail launches of the spring. The popular U.S. chain had established a devoted Canadian following on-line, and those familiar with its line of women’s clothing, accessories and housewares have been flocking to the new store in droves. “Don’t come on a Saturday,” manager Nancy Chang advises. “It’s crazy.” On this Thursday morning, the shop is already abuzz with uptown moms and daughters. (Downtowners will get theirs in July when a Yorkville location opens.) With almost 7,000 square feet packed with goodies, shopping can be overwhelming, so we asked Chang to show us some of her favourite items.
