Good Stuff Cheap: six designer sample sales that make lining up seem entirely sane

(Images: Jeremy Laing by Thomas Kletecka/Collective Edit; high heel courtesy of Alexander McQueen; bow tie courtesy of Band of Outsiders; jeans courtesy of Nudie Jeans Co.; zip-up courtesy of Puma; kids’ boot courtesy of Geox; )

For Straight-from-SoHo Fashion
Crowds huddled in Ossington’s doorways are a familiar sight, but nothing compares to the sidewalk jams that form when Jonathan and Olivia owner Jackie O’Brien holds her biannual sales (starting on Boxing Day and again in June or July). Cool kids, designers, ad execs and artsy-leaning scions flock here for deconstructed hipster wear from Manhattan, Sweden and the U.K., by the likes of Alexander Wang, Rag and Bone, Band of Outsiders, Engineered Garments, and Wings and Horns. All up to 50 per cent off. E-mail info@jonathanandolivia.com to get on the list.

FOR Big European Labels
Toronto retail veteran Elsa Reia was hosting sample sales long before they were in vogue, which explains her all-star roster of designer brands: apparel, accessories and footwear from Alexander McQueen, Rick Owens, Dries Van Noten, Miu Miu, Martin Margiela, Lanvin, Isabel Marant and more. The blowout runs over two days in April and October. Expect a variety of sizes and inventory, from recent and past seasons, marked down by 70 per cent or more. E-mail info@reiastudio.com to sign up.

Gape at Celine Dion’s shoes, for a good cause

(Image: Roel Schroeven)

The Manulife Centre Ron White store is set to become a regular Bata Shoe Museum at 1 p.m. tomorrow with the unveiling of a display of signed and donated shoes from Celine Dion, David Foster, Paul Anka, Nikki Yanofsky and Charice (familiar to Gleeks as Sunshine Corazon). The event kicks off the Ron White Foundation’s 15th annual shoe drive, which has given more than 21,000 shoes and boots to the needy over the years. Also on display will be shoes from such past donors as Matt Damon, Robert Kennedy Jr., Mia Farrow and Michael Cera. To participate, bring a pair of lightly used winter shoes to any Ron White location or to the Avenues level of the Royal York.

Our everything-but-the-pocket-watch-primer on the season’s sartorial schoolboy

Shoes $215 at John Fluevog; socks $30 at Harry Rosen; trousers $89 at Club Monaco

The Third Law of Motion says every action has an equal and opposite reaction, and while we generally shy away from breaking fashion down into a science, the current collegiate craze—the one that has Toronto dandies rolling up their pants like a pack of post-pubescent Tom Sawyers—neatly demonstrates Newton’s point. Just a year ago, our most fashion-forward subsets were flannel-shirt deep in the urban woodsman aesthetic, celebrating all that is burly and butch. Now we have a city full of grown men reining in their facial hair (because baby’s bum is the new beard) and taking fashion cues from the halls of higher learning—that world of privilege, pomp and paisley.

Brace yourself: the $800 Ugg boot, courtesy of Jimmy Choo

Would you spend $795 on a pair of Uggs? Neither would we. But that’s the price of a pair of Jimmy Choo–designed suede boots on luxury shopping site Net-a-porter.com. (And that’s in U.S. dollars, friends.) They are fancied up with gold and silver studs, making them look like the end result of one of our best-forgotten Bedazzler projects. Hitting on two other trends, the Choo Uggs (Chuggs?) come in fringed versions ($695) and in leopard print ($595). Both are seriously unattractive. Whose idea was this?

Not available on Net-a-porter are the boots covered in gold stars, one in zebra stripe and a cable-knit pair. We can’t imagine that there are many 15-year-old girls who could convince their parents to shell out for a pair of these atrocities, but they are a cunning species. The line is limited edition, so with any luck we won’t have to look at many pairs on Toronto’s slush-filled streets this winter. Take a look at all the Chuggs in our slide show >>

Jeanne Beker’s favourite 100 stores in Toronto

Few would argue that Jeanne Beker isn’t the high priestess of fashion in Canada—the woman is a legend. We’re more familiar with watching Jeanne explore the runways of Paris than the streets of Toronto, so when Post City Magazines published Jeanne’s picks for the top 100 stores in Toronto, we set about dissecting it. We were able to suss out where her daughter’s bought their prom dresses (Betsey Johnson), the store that makes her drool (The Room), where she goes to find out what the cool kids are up to (Propaganda) and her neighbourhood standby (Gee Beauty). Check out the full list here.

Introducing: Frye’s pop-up shop

The place: The latest in the city’s string of pop-up shops is Frye, which has taken up residence inside Ron White’s swanky Bloor Street store. It has the biggest selection of the brand’s boots, shoes and bags in the country. Frye was founded in 1863 and is the oldest continuously operating shoe company in the United States. Its boots were worn by soldiers during the Civil War, and Teddy Roosevelt and now by Barack Obama.

Best of fall fashion: nine favourite must-haves

Three of the city’s most stylish personalities reveal what they’re buying this fall, plus six of our favourite autumn looks after the jump.

NICHOLAS MELLAMPHY
Creative director of The Room

Black Brown 1826’s cashmere jacket
$399, The Bay

“This cashmere jacket from Black Brown 1826 is going to be the centrepiece of my fall wardrobe—I live in denim and jackets. I’m getting it in both black and charcoal. I love the luxurious texture of the fabric and the super-slim cut.”

JULES POWER
Womenswear designer

18 Waits’ Johnny hat
$225, 18waits.com

“I’m completely in love with 18 Waits’ Johnny hat for fall. It was designed in collaboration with Biltmore, Canada’s oldest hat maker, and made in Guelph. It’s an amazing smoky grey colour and totally in keeping with the earthy gypsy style that’s inspiring me this season.”

COCO ROCHA
Model

Greta Constantine’s Doris dress

“I love the draping on Greta Constantine’s new Doris dress, a midnight blue gown that recalls Old Hollywood. It’s perfect for a red carpet event anywhere.”

Bootie call: this season’s must-have shoe is under $200

One of our favourite footwear looks for fall is an invisible wedge heel—it’s trendy but still understated. Added bonus: we get the height of a heel with the comfort of a flat. This shoe-bootie (shootie?) from L.A. designer Jeffrey Campbell is 100 per cent leather and well priced at $180. It will be available this Friday at one of our favourite shoe stores in the city, Chasse Gardée.

Chasse Gardée, 1084 Queen St. W., 416-901-9613.

Introducing: Dr. Martens opens store on Queen West

They're baaaack! (Image: Fraser Abe)

The place: The 1990s are back, big time. Biggie blasts on Chum FM, Sperrys and Red Wings are cool again, plaid dominates the city’s wardrobe—hell, even Ace of Base is back together. So we weren’t shocked to see that ’90s mainstay Dr. Martens is back in Toronto, too, with its first Canadian retail space at Queen and Spadina. The store is a yellow space reminiscent of the bright stitching synonymous with Docs. Oversized palm chairs are an inviting, if a little surreal, spot to try on the kicks, and for some reason, a piano sits at the register; guests are invited to play. We saved the rendition of Chopsticks for another day.

Aldo expands into the United States with 600 stores

Aldo clogs (Image: Aldo.com)

Montreal shoe company Aldo, that Canadian mall staple, is expanding into the States by teaming up with JC Penney to offer a line of discount footwear under the name Call It Spring. Aimed at 15- to 30-year-olds, the line will offer men’s and women’s shoes and bags from $30 to $70. The plan is to open 100 stores within existing JC Penney locations by next spring, with 500 more to follow by fall 2011. JC Penney is using the deal to attempt to differentiate itself from such department store rivals as Macy’s and Kohl’s. Cue the Canadian invasion.
