The Find: shoelaces (no, seriously, these ones are awesome)

There are a number of shoe options for men: fancy brogues, casual brogues, wingtips, chukka boots, godawful fur atrocities, creepers, oxfords, spectators, loafers and more. What there aren’t a lot of are shoelace options for our dressier shoes. We recently stumbled upon David Barclay’s Stolen Riches, a Toronto-based online shoelace manufacturer who seemingly grew tired of white laces getting dirty and black, brown and grey laces looking like, um, everyone else’s laces. Right now, his creations are only made for three to four and five to six pairs of eyelets, but there’s word of boot and sneaker laces coming down the pipeline. Just like at Pitti Uomo this year and Dunhill last year. We’re just happy to have a local dealer who can take care of our penchant for ostentatious colour. $14.50.

Max Adler, Josh Sussman, Catherine O’Hara and more donate their footwear for Ron White’s 16th annual shoe drive

Could it be these Celine Dion, er, boots? (Image: mcfly1er)

Ron White kicks off his 16th annual shoe drive in the Manulife Centre this Friday at 1 p.m. with an event that showcases celebrity-donated pairs, encouraging people to “follow in the footsteps of their favourite celebrity.” (We knew there had to be a pun like that somewhere.) This year’s charity partners include Dress for Success, Halton Women’s Place, New Circles, Ve’ahavta and Out of the Cold. Over the past 16 years, the shoe drive has collected more than 25,000 pairs of shoes and boots for those in need. Donors can bring in a pair of lightly used shoes and gawk at celeb kicks from Glee’s Max Adler and Josh Sussman, Modern Family’s Rico Rodriguez, Hawaii 5-0 and Lost’s Terry Quinn, Mad Men’s Robert Morse, David Arquette (the ex–Mr. Courtney Cox), Debi Mazar and Canadian funnywoman Catherine O’Hara. Alongside this year’s pairs, White will also display some past donations from the likes of Céline Dion, Matt Damon, Kevin Spacey, David Foster and Hilary Duff. What better way to assuage your holiday season guilt (we know we shouldn’t have yelled like that, Mom, but we’ll get married when we’re good and ready) than with an act of kindness?

Pairs will be collected at all Ron White locations across the city until February 5.

Pay no attention to what the advertisers tell you: there’s no gift “perfect for every woman in your life.” Still, we’re pretty sure discerning females will find a few things on this list to love. As the winter drags on, a Philip Lim muffler is sure to get a lot of use (and envious glares), and for women with a style all their own, we’ll show you where you can mix some custom fragrances. Finally, for that very special lady, we have a diamond necklace that won’t break the bank. Check out 18 gifts that are sure to make any gal smile in a gallery after the jump »

We can’t all be glamorous jet-setters and playboys, skipping across the globe to test the slopes of Whistler, Kitzbühel and Les Arcs all in a single week. But for the trips your loved ones can take, they can do it in style with a high-performance pair of electric blue Salomon skis, a quality Olympus E-P3 camera and a sharp—and pocket-friendly—travel toothbrush. We even found some great maps that never crease no matter how much you abuse them (seriously). Check out all 19 of our travel and playtime essentials in a gallery after the jump »

Sometimes it is hard to stick to a limit, because sometimes the gifts over $100 really are the perfect presents. We’ve found a touchably soft mink fur bear (don’t knock it till you’ve touched it) that will win the heart of any child or, really, human being, as well as a humidor for the lady or gentleman who subscribes to Cigar Aficionado, a pelt rug, an intoxicating men’s fragrance from Eau d’Italie and everything in between. Leave It to Bieber

Justin Bieber’s sneaker sells for $5,500 on eBay

Justin Bieber in his signature purple (Image: sheilapic76)

First hair, now footwear—Justin Bieber’s belongings seem to be quite a hit on the charity circuit these days. The Biebs recently donated a single Nike sneaker, in his signature purple, of course, to Stratford Northwestern Secondary School. The proceeds from the auction will help Bieber’s former school raise money for a broadcasting and communications studio (which couldn’t be more fitting). The size 7 1/2 sneaker features a few scuffs and some gravel and dirt, as well as a scrawled black autograph. In case anyone questioned the authenticity of the shoe, it comes complete with a letter attesting to its authenticity. The singular shoe sold on eBay for $5,500, a price that plummeted from $12, 400 on the last day. Apparently, some of the higher bids weren’t legitimate. Leave it to those over-enthusiastic beliebers.

Sailor-chic wedges to wear from the dock to dinner

Let’s face it: by the third week of January, the sales racks have some pretty slim pickings. Instead, go straight to the new spring stock, where you might just be able to get a better deal on full-price goods (with the Canadian dollar soaring and our purchasing power going through the roof, we’ve never seen designer price points so low). Take these navy blue lace-up wedges designed by Castañer. They’re versatile enough to go from the dock to dinner (with the right accessories), and available at Holt Renfrew for only $185.

For Straight-from-SoHo Fashion
Crowds huddled in Ossington’s doorways are a familiar sight, but nothing compares to the sidewalk jams that form when Jonathan and Olivia owner Jackie O’Brien holds her biannual sales (starting on Boxing Day and again in June or July). Cool kids, designers, ad execs and artsy-leaning scions flock here for deconstructed hipster wear from Manhattan, Sweden and the U.K., by the likes of Alexander Wang, Rag and Bone, Band of Outsiders, Engineered Garments, and Wings and Horns. All up to 50 per cent off. E-mail info@jonathanandolivia.com to get on the list.

FOR Big European Labels
Toronto retail veteran Elsa Reia was hosting sample sales long before they were in vogue, which explains her all-star roster of designer brands: apparel, accessories and footwear from Alexander McQueen, Rick Owens, Dries Van Noten, Miu Miu, Martin Margiela, Lanvin, Isabel Marant and more. The blowout runs over two days in April and October. Expect a variety of sizes and inventory, from recent and past seasons, marked down by 70 per cent or more. E-mail info@reiastudio.com to sign up.

Gape at Celine Dion’s shoes, for a good cause

(Image: Roel Schroeven)

The Manulife Centre Ron White store is set to become a regular Bata Shoe Museum at 1 p.m. tomorrow with the unveiling of a display of signed and donated shoes from Celine Dion, David Foster, Paul Anka, Nikki Yanofsky and Charice (familiar to Gleeks as Sunshine Corazon). The event kicks off the Ron White Foundation’s 15th annual shoe drive, which has given more than 21,000 shoes and boots to the needy over the years. Also on display will be shoes from such past donors as Matt Damon, Robert Kennedy Jr., Mia Farrow and Michael Cera. To participate, bring a pair of lightly used winter shoes to any Ron White location or to the Avenues level of the Royal York.
