25 awesome Toronto Boxing Day sales that will inspire you to don gay apparel (i.e. pants)

December 26 (or, in some parts, Boxing Day) is one of the worst days to leave the house, especially if the reason for leaving the house is shopping. People become vicious, elbowing single mothers for toasters or an eighth television (because who doesn’t need an eighth television?). But we’ve made some calls and have taken stock of some of the worthwhile deals in the city for men, women and children (and, of course, shops that cater to him and her, the whole family and homeowners) that will take us away from Best Buy, Future Shop or Walmart. Check out 25 safe bets for Boxing Day sales this year after the jump.

The richest diamond sale in Canadian history is apparently something of a bargain buy

When it comes to auctions, there’s almost nothing more titillating to bidders than a giant, multi-million-dollar, Kardashian-sized diamond (except perhaps for Justin Bieber’s Johnson). Yesterday, the newly revived Ritchie’s auction house offered such an item at the ROM. Normally, such bling-filled bidding happens in more glamorous locales like London or New York (or, you know, in Bond films), but thanks to the soft American and European economies, the seller—an anonymous, presumably cash-strapped Belgian hotelier—decided to offload the rock in the relatively strong Canadian market. We’re not sure how well that strategy worked, however, as the 50-karat jewel sold for less than a third of its $10-million value at a mere $2.7 million. On the one hand, we now wonder if Toronto is the Walmart of international jewellery sales; on the other, it’s also reportedly the richest diamond sale in Canadian history. Naturally, the anonymous buyer has only been described as “mysterious” and “international”—just like that nameless foreign condo buyer—but given the sale price, we feel the need to add “bargain hunter” to the list. Gilt.com is expanding, and now Canadians can join in on the online shopping fun

Gilt.com has announced that Canadians will now be able to take part in the popular website that holds flash sales for designer products. For the next 12 days, Canadian shoppers will also receive free shipping, which we figured would pique the interest of devoted online shoppers. Each day at 12 p.m., shoppers can go online and access 20 different flash sales of season apparel and accessories for men, women and children. Fashion won’t be the only market represented, as Gilt is offering home decor as well, but the emphasis is on being impulsive, because each sale only lasts roughly 26 hours. Gilt says nearly every item sells out in the first hour, so it seems like a good idea to buy early (and we’re sure, if they have it their way, buy often). It’s a popular website in the U.S., so we figure this is big news for people who want up to 60 per cent off on designer items they can’t typically afford. Frankly, we’re just happy it’s a flash sale and not a flash mob.

The Drake’s annual fall market promises chocolate and bacon cookies, handmade products and vintage records

People buying things (Image: The Drake)

The Drake holds a fall market every year with handmade goods from local artisans—think of it as a flea market or a church bazaar, but one that caters to the people who might frequent the Drake Underground or drink caesars for brunch over chicken and waffles. In place of the 100 per cent geriatric vendors you may find at a church craft sale, The Drake brings in students, local collectors and purveyors of soaps, mustards and bacon-filled baked goods (there will be chocolate and bacon cookies, in case your arteries still require some abuse after Thanksgiving). The annual event takes place Saturday, October 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include handmade books and kaleidoscopes from Charline Wang, natural mustards from Guy Rawlings, vintage and handmade textiles and ceramics made by Rachel Tremaine, illustrations, designs and fine art from Courtney Wotherspoon, handmade body care products from Scott Robinson, handmade clothing, collars and bow ties from Danielle Bartlett, jewellery from Edilou Woo and a substantial collection of records from Natalie Petozzi and Nomi Malik. We recommend starting with some mustard tasting, followed by a bacon and chocolate palate cleanser—maybe grab a couple of records for the road and create a fun Sex and the City movie montage or arrange for a sexy striptease with all of your new collars and bow ties (just like in the movies).

Designer Andy Thê-Anh liquidating, closing stores

A gown from Thê-Anh's fall collection at Toronto fashion week (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Sad news. Canadian fashion designer Andy Thê-Anh is liquidating his merchandise after financial backers pulled their support from his line. A sale of $2.8 million worth of clothing (to be sold at 70 to 80 per cent off) begins today by Maynards liquidators at his Montreal Cours Mont Royal shop. It will run for several months. “It was not the most elegant way to close,’’ Thê-Anh told the Montreal Gazette. “People are interested only in glamour. I create the glamorous image, but they don’t understand the hard work involved.” From the Gazette:

Another downtown shop, on Mountain St., closed this autumn. In all, about 20 employees are out of work, Thê-Anh said, including head office and boutique staff. A Yorkville shop in Toronto has also closed.

Wicked is seeing green (Image: Joan Marcus)

Is Wicked the city’s favourite musical? Judging by the box office sales, it just might be. All told, Wicked brought in $11,459,475 during its six weeks at the Canon. So rest assured that you weren’t the only one belting out “Defying Gravity” in the shower.

Toronto art auction makes $14 million in sales

Alex Colville's Man on Verandah sold for $1.29 million (Image: Heffel.com)

International lovers of Canadian art went a little paddle crazy last night, buying $14 million in fine art at Heffel’s fall auction in Toronto. The top seller was Man on Verandah, a tempura tempera painting by Nova Scotia artist Alex Colville that went for $1.29 million. It’s the most his work has ever fetched and is also the highest auction price ever recorded for a living Canadian artist (Colville is 90). An abstract knife painting by Jean-Paul Riopelle also broke the million-dollar mark, selling for $1,111,500, and 23 other pieces went for more than $100,000.
