Target announces planned site locations for its 2013 Canadian arrival

It turns out there’s a lot of info about the Target on our backs—slotted for 2013—that wasn’t available until recently. First, the Hudson’s Bay Company is subletting their Zellers stores for slow, long-term renovations, meaning one day, some (but not all) Zellers locations will vanish, and in their place will be Target stores at the following spots: Woodbine Centre, Cloverdale Mall, Shoppers World Danforth, Centerpoint Mall, Bridlewood Mall and East York Town Centre (in addition to several unconfirmed shops throughout the GTA).

In January, Target paid $1.8 billion for the lease rights to 220 Zellers locations, and it intends to commit $10 million toward renovations for each site. That’s a lot of money to become Canada’s go-to place for cheap, well, everything. But with outed racist John Galliano taking over as designer for top-selling Wal-Mart brand George, and Target teaming up with big brands like Rodarte and Missoni, we figure we can almost guarantee where the fashion loyalties will lie.

Holts nabs NYC exclusive: Opening Ceremony x Rodarte

In the recent Bay versus Holt Renfrew Scrabble match of big-time gets, the Bay nabbed Topshop (which, gauging by excitement level, was like dropping down a letter Z on a triple word score), and Holts has countered with an exclusive pairing of Rodarte, the fashion darlings known for their revealing, open-knit designs, and Opening Ceremony, the N.Y.C. mecca for the Lower East Side set. Starting March 28, a selection of women’s clothing (sorry, fellas) and accessories will be on offer on the third floor. Rodarte is also known for their designs featured in Black Swan, but since there’s been so little media coverage of the film (starring someone named Natalie Portman), we’re sure no one knows what we’re talking about.

Jay Manuel to debut Attitude collection for Sears Canada

(Image: Sears Canada Inc.)

Jay Manuel, esteemed member of Tyra Banks’ entourage turned Canada’s Next Top Model host, has joined forces with Sears Canada as the creative director for Attitude Jay Manuel, a Sears private label whose fall/winter 2011 collection will debut at LG Fashion Week on March 30. According to a press release, the collection combines a sophisticated early 1960s silhouette with luxurious textures from the 1970s (although the fabric that comes to mind when we think ’70s is polyester, so let’s hope Jay’s got something else up his sleeve).

Goodbye Zellers, hello Target! The U.S. chain is finally coming to Canada, $1.8 billion later

Rumours have been circulating forever now that Target is joining the ranks of U.S. retailers setting up in Canada, alongside J. Crew, Kohl’s, J.C. Penney and Crate and Barrel. Well, today those rumours were confirmed—and Toronto Life’s prediction from early 2010 was right. Target—or Tar-jay, in sarcastic French—will open in the Great White North by 2013, replacing the HBC-owned chain Zellers.

The glamorous tree-print scarf from Black Swan

Forget Santa flicks. The dramatic, sexy and unsettling Black Swan was our favourite film of the holiday season, thanks in no small part to the brilliant costume design by Rodarte. You can get a little piece of the Black Swan wardrobe for yourself at Accessity in Yorkville. Mila Kunis’ character sported the grey version of this super-soft tree-print cashmere scarf by Tilo in the movie; it’s available in an array of colours for $190.

Toronto the boring? Fashion at TIFF duller than at Venice film fest

It’s a tale of two festival cities: on the left, we have Natalie Portman attending the TIFF premiere of Black Swan last night, and on the right, the actor attends the same premiere two weeks ago in Venice. Can you spot the difference?

From Natalie Portman’s lesbian-ballet drama to Ben Affleck’s comeback, five TIFF films with major buzz

All right, now that we’re past the “OMG! Don Draper is coming to Toronto to find a new Betty!” stage after TIFF announced its lineup yesterday morning, let’s go through the five films the critics are keeping their eyes on.*

1. The Town
The stars: Jon Hamm, Ben Affleck, Blake Lively, Jeremy Renner, Rebecca Hall.
Plot: A career criminal (Affleck) falls in love with a bank manager, while an FBI agent (Hamm) is hot on his trail.
Buzz factor: The movie, which Affleck also directed and co-wrote, is based on Chuck Hogan’s Hammett Prize–winning crime novel Prince of Thieves, which Stephen King called one of the 10 best novels of 2004. Some critics are calling the film Affleck’s best shot at a comeback.

Toronto men get lift from high heels

A heeled men's boot from John Fluevog (Image: Carlo Mendoza)

High heels for men are no longer solely within the realm of drag queens. Today the Star declares them the must-have accessory for the fashion-forward modern man. Besides, with the fellas trying everything from compression underwear to mantyhose, it was only a matter of time before they would be spotted in stilettos.

Androgynous, edgy and sometimes masculine women’s footwear by Balenciaga, Rodarte and Alexander Wang is most popular among fashionistos. Montreal fashion editor Cary Tauben attended Jeremy Laing’s New York presentation in a pair of heels from Topshop and has considered buying a pair of thigh-high Rodarte boots. (The only time he lowers himself to wear flats is on airplanes.)

Canadian figure skater Patrick Chan makes modelling debut

Patrick Chan for Harry Rosen (Photo courtesy of Harry Rosen)

Last year, figure skating became the stuff of reality television dreams, and now figure skaters have become the stuff of fashion inspiration. The men of skating are proving to be a fashion-forward bunch, scoring modelling gigs, taking on PETA and acting as muses to designers.

The leader of the pack is Johnny Weir, the dramatic American singles skater, who’s created controversy with a staunchly pro-fur stance, saying he wouldn’t stop wearing fur until he saw “a chinchilla wearing me.” Weir also played model in the New York Times Magazine recently, wearing a revealing crocheted costume made specifically for him by Rodarte, the avant-garde label known more for quadruple-digit prices than quadruple lutzes. Designer Vera Wang, a former figure skater herself, has created outfits for her new muse, U.S. skater Evan Lysacek, in Vancouver for both his short and long programs.

Target is coming to Canada

First was the news that Topshop is considering opening in The Bay, and now Target is contemplating a move north of the border. After a year of dismal sales stateside, Tar-jay, beloved for its cheap fashions and collaborations with credible labels like Rodarte, is considering whether expanding into the Canadian market would improve its outlook. Unfortunately, it will probably be at least three years until the retailer makes the move.

The New Yorker on Rodarte: the emperor has no clothes

rodartetarget

A look from Rodarte's Target collection (Photo from Target)

Rodarte is probably one of the most talked about fashion lines coming out of the States right now. In only five years and with no formal training, sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy have nabbed over $200,000 in industry prizes, won the endorsement of Vogue editor Anna Wintour and designed a sought-after diffusion line for Target. In this week’s issue of The New Yorker, writer Amanda Fortini documents the ascent of the avant-garde designers but isn’t as awed by the sisters Mulleavy as the rest of the fashion world.

Fortini describes Kate as “zaftig” (our favourite new euphemism for “fat”) and takes note of part-eaten boxes of mini-cheesecakes lying around the studio. She also classifies Kate’s sweater as “the sort a frumpy older lady might wear.” But sharper criticisms are aimed at the Target line.
