Michael Cera vs. Jesse Eisenberg: is this the end of the lovable geek?

The great geek-off

Ever since he stole our hearts as the Tommy Bahama–bedecked George Michael Bluth on Arrested Development, Brampton boy Michael Cera has been Hollywood’s go-to geek. Not since Lewis and Gilbert took their revenge has any actor done so much to make dorks look cool. He did it in Superbad, then he did it in Juno, then in Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, and so on. For a while, Cera ruled supreme over all things dweeb, but some recent developments in movieland—namely Jesse Eisenberg’s amazing performance as ruthless Facebook über-geek Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network—have us wondering whether Cera and the era of the lovable Poindexter is officially over.

To settle the debate, we ask that you vote for your preferred geek, but first, a few points to consider.

Buff Like Harley: How an unassuming kid from North York got his number on every speed dial in Hollywood

Lady Gaga, Halle Berry, Kanye West and Robert Downey Jr. would all be as flabby as the rest of us if it weren’t for celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak. How an unassuming kid from North York got his number on every speed dial in Hollywood

Harley Pasternak is desperately seeking a sleeveless T-shirt. The fitness guru has arrived without one at a photo shoot in the Distillery District. The shoot is for a campaign to promote his burgeoning product line on the Shopping Channel. One minion is sent to phone American Apparel and track down this much needed garment. In the meantime, Harley considers other wardrobe options. For casual, man-on-the-street shots, he selects a baby blue polo and jeans—baby blue, he’s advised by an assistant, will highlight his tan. A makeup artist applies foundation and some eyeliner; a photographer assesses lighting options. Bagels and beverages sit untouched while Pasternak noshes on the whole-grain muffin he brought with him. And then he’s on. Pasternak vamps under the bright lights like a bald Gisele Bündchen.

Tee hee: Toronto Star says Twilight stars James Pattinson

Sure, we all make mistakes, but when a paper runs a story about Twilight and says it stars James Pattinson, we are obliged to take a screen grab. It’s like a blogging rule or something. (Robert Pattinson, a.k.a. the most lusted-after teen heartthrob other than Justin Bieber, is the actor’s actual name.) Both the story, which is credited to Reuters, and the photo caption made the error. Ah, those disgruntled wire reporters.

My Edward Cullen Twilight make-over

Norma Hill-Patton works on Style reporter Karon Liu

Even non-Twihards know that associating oneself with the Twilight series is a wise move, so when my editor found out that Norma Hill-Patton, the head makeup artist for New Moon, Catwoman and the last two X-Men movies, would be at the International Make-Up Artist Trade Show at the CNE yesterday, she sent me for an Edward Cullen make-over.

Toronto Fashion Week

Philip Sparks went fishing and landed a big one

A look from Philip Sparks' spring 2010 collection (Photo by Jenna Marie Wakani)

Toronto Fashion Week doesn’t officially start until Monday, but last night one of the city’s fast-rising design talents, Philip Sparks, debuted his spring 2010 collection at the Burroughes Building on Queen Street West. The young menswear designer called upon Canadian cottaging days of yore to evoke laid-back moments on the dock. Some models (who looked like the man-children of Sparks and Robert Pattinson) carried a fishing pole or net; another was sent out in hip waders.

There were pieces that felt like more direct references to the past—high-waisted trousers, sweater sets—but Sparks’ brand of nostalgia is modern (a wool-Tencel tank and cardigan) and clever. He collaborated with the textile designer Kerry Croghan to create a witty “Gone Fishing” print—a toile-like pattern with scenes of camping, angling and canoeing. While 1950s CPR getaway ads were cited as inspiration, this wasn’t the overt Canadiana that we’re all getting sick of. Instead of beavers and maple leafs, we got a sophisticated, fresh and optimistic collection that will be hard to top next week.

See all of the looks from the collection after the jump.

The best chef in the world, butchers as sex symbols, Drake wants to open a T.O. restaurant

Vampire sighting: Kristen ??? was spotted in Vancouver

Vampire sighting: Kristen Stewart was spotted at a Vancouver sushi restaurant this week, dining with co-star Robert Pattinson (Photo by Laura Ramos)

• Rapper and Degrassi alum Drake says he wants to open a restaurant in Toronto, but he’s also planning another album and a few films, so the culinary dream might be a few years off. The “Best I Ever Had” singer is known to be a fan of Vivoli, so we wouldn’t be surprised if his potential menu included pizza and cocktails. [Rap Up]

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were seen celebrating at Miko Sushi in Vancouver last weekend. The pair is in town to film the third Twilight movie, Eclipse. We assume he left a generous tip this time; the servers at Il Cantinori in New York weren’t pleased when he left them a paltry 14 per cent. [New York Daily News]

Robert Pattinson cheaps out, forks outsell knives, measuring restaurant pretension

Tipple over tipping: Robert Pattison leaves a meagre 14 per cent (Photo by twilight foxdie)

Tipple over tipping: Robert Pattinson leaves a meagre 14 per cent (Photo by twilight foxdie)

Twilight star Robert Pattinson has outraged New York waiters by leaving a 14 per cent tip. The English actor munched on caprese salad while downing chianti and beer until well past midnight this week, and when he offered just $50 on his $350 bill, the aghast wait staff at Il Cantinori felt compelled to leak his penny-pinching to the media. Fans defended Pattinson’s faux pas as a simple cultural misunderstanding (tipping isn’t customary in Britain), but no one seems to have asked if the service was bad. [New York Daily News]

• The British are buying half as many knives as forks, according to a study by Debenham’s department store. Marketers have come to the conclusion that more meals than ever–like burgers, fries and salad–don’t require cutting. In bustling London, full of time-strapped urbanites wolfing down their dinner, the fork-to-knife gap is even wider (three forks sold per knife). [Independent]
