Spotlight: Sarah Gadon is a model of restraint in David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method

Sarah Gadon

Cinderella stories are among Hollywood’s most clichéd and hollow myths. Yet they keep happening, both onscreen and off. Sarah Gadon should know: in less than a year, the 24-year-old Toronto actor has gone from guest stints on such shows as Being Erica and Murdoch Mysteries to starring in major movies alongside the likes of Michael Fassbender and Robert Pattinson.

Metric announces it will score David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis, and Emily Haines is excited about rat currency

Emily Haines likes rat currency, and her band Metric will score David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis (Image: Nikki Varkevisser)

Emily Haines, frontwoman for the band Metric, announced that the group will be scoring David Cronenberg’s new film Cosmopolis, which was shot in Toronto this past summer. Unless you were living under a rock, you know what Cosmopolis is, since the production resulted in multiple Robert Pattinson sightings around town (and we’re certain people enjoyed the Twilight films, so it was big news), and it features TIFF breakout star and fashionista Sarah Gadon. According to Exclaim! magazine, the band sent an email to fans announcing its collaboration with Howard Shore, the composer responsible for music in The Lord of the Rings and The Aviator, to name a few (Metric has worked with Shore before, recording a song for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse soundtrack). The band took to their website to express excitement over this latest project: “We will be working with our favorite film composer, Howard Shore, on the score for a new David Cronenberg movie starring Robert Pattinson, minus the vampires! It’s an adaptation of the book Cosmopolis by Don DeLillo, and the themes are right in tune with the overall mood of the world at the moment. In Cosmopolis, the rat has become a unit of currency!” We’re not sure what the last part means (we’ll have to see the film when it’s released in 2012), but we’re on board with another Shore-Metric-Pattinson collaboration, without bloodsucking demons and glittery skin.

Venice vs. TIFF fashion showdown, Sarah Gadon edition

Venice vs. Toronto

Toronto’s own Sarah Gadon is certainly one to watch—she’s recently starred in The Moth Diaries and David Cronenberg’s TIFF hit A Dangerous Method, as well as having shot Cosmopolis, another Cronenberg flick, in the city with Robert Pattinson earlier this summer. Gadon is also one of the lucky up-and-coming actresses to walk red carpets at both the Venice Film Festival and TIFF this year, but we’ve got to hand it to her for stepping up the glamour at her hometown festival. Gadon attended the September 2 premiere of A Dangerous Method in Venice wearing a simple deep blue dress with a peep cutout and dramatic red lips. While we think Gadon looks beautiful (and a bit like Portia de Rossi) in Venice, we have to say that Gadon really oozed glamour at the Toronto premiere of A Dangerous Method in a full-length Jason Wu gown. She’s definitely bringing the red carpet vibe back to TIFF, and we love her for it.

Mark Wahlberg purchases an exclusive penthouse property in the city that saved his life

(Image: S Pakhrin)

TIFF is still a few months away, but the celebrity sightings are already starting. In the last week alone, Robert Pattinson made an appearance at Goodnight, Martha Stewart dined at O&B Canteen and Rihanna proclaimed her love for the T-dot on Twitter. Then, yesterday, the Toronto Star reported that Mark Wahlberg, the man who would’ve been on one of the two L.A.-bound Boston jets crashed by the 9/11 hijackers were it not for a last-minute trip to Toronto, just bought a $12-million condo in Yorkville. Sure, he didn’t spend a record $28 million on his new digs—but who needs an unnamed international man of mystery when you can have Marky Mark?

Vampire Sighting: Robert Pattinson spotted filming at Ossington hot spot The Lakeview

Robert Pattinson stops service at The Lakeview (Image: Matt MacGillivray and Twilight)

Director David Cronenberg is making good use of Toronto hot spots while shooting Cosmopolis in our city for the next two months—this week, Robert Pattinson graced popular Ossington and Dundas restaurant The Lakeview for several days of filming, which meant security was tight on the downtown set as bystanders looked on, unable to order their smoked meat sandwiches and peameal bacon–adorned poutine. The use of a downtown locale means Toronto fans are all aflutter over RPattz’s whereabouts, posting his filming schedule days in advance and tweeting pictures of the set. One fan even posted this video on YouTube, appropriately labelled “Robert Pattinson walking in Toronto.” Groundbreaking stuff, really.

The Dundas and Ossington set came complete with several N.Y.C. taxis (the film itself is set in New York, where production will move later in the summer) and the famous white limo that graces the cover of DeLillo’s novel. We wonder where Cronenberg will send the cast next—perhaps The Drake, which was featured in Bruce McDonald’s This Movie is Broken or Bloor Street’s Sonic Boom and Lee’s Palace, which were easily recognizable in Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World? Either way, we’re sure we’ll know days in advance where Cosmopolis is shooting next, thanks to the magic of the Interweb Twihard fandemonium.

Vampire Sighting: Robert Pattinson at King Street East and Victoria Street

Robert Pattinson spotted (Image: Google Maps and screengrab from Just Jared)

Toronto may not be known as Hollywood North—that’s our westerly counterpart, Vancouver—but we’ve got our fair share of movies being shot in the city this summer. One of them is Cosmopolis, an adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel of the same name, by local director David Cronenberg. The film stars the best-looking vampire around, Robert Pattinson, who has been spotted on set at King Street East and Victoria Street sporting a suit and tie, with slicked-back hair.

Sarah Gadon to play Robert Pattinson’s wife in Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis

Move over, Kristen Stewart. Twilight’s Team Edward fans now have a new actress to obsessively hate. Toronto’s Sarah Gadon has been pegged to play Robert Pattinson’s estranged wife in David Cronenberg’s upcoming film Cosmopolis, which is shooting in Hogtown this summer. Gadon’s role was initially going to be played by Inception star Marion Cotillard, but the French actress had to back out after becoming pregnant. Enter Gadon, a regular on the Canadian small-screen circuit, with roles that range from the children’s program Ruby Gloom (see YTV appearance, left) to Life With Derek, The Border and Being Erica. More recently, Gadon played Emma Jung, wife of Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung, in another Cronenberg film, A Dangerous Method, currently in post-production. A tip to Gadon for staying in the good graces of Twihards: perhaps stay away from the supposedly smelly former vampire, and opt to hang out with fellow cast members Paul Giamatti and Juliette Binoche instead.

Michael Cera vs. Jesse Eisenberg: is this the end of the lovable geek?

The great geek-off

Ever since he stole our hearts as the Tommy Bahama–bedecked George Michael Bluth on Arrested Development, Brampton boy Michael Cera has been Hollywood’s go-to geek. Not since Lewis and Gilbert took their revenge has any actor done so much to make dorks look cool. He did it in Superbad, then he did it in Juno, then in Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, and so on. For a while, Cera ruled supreme over all things dweeb, but some recent developments in movieland—namely Jesse Eisenberg’s amazing performance as ruthless Facebook über-geek Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network—have us wondering whether Cera and the era of the lovable Poindexter is officially over.

To settle the debate, we ask that you vote for your preferred geek, but first, a few points to consider.

Buff Like Harley: How an unassuming kid from North York got his number on every speed dial in Hollywood

Lady Gaga, Halle Berry, Kanye West and Robert Downey Jr. would all be as flabby as the rest of us if it weren’t for celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak. How an unassuming kid from North York got his number on every speed dial in Hollywood

Harley Pasternak is desperately seeking a sleeveless T-shirt. The fitness guru has arrived without one at a photo shoot in the Distillery District. The shoot is for a campaign to promote his burgeoning product line on the Shopping Channel. One minion is sent to phone American Apparel and track down this much needed garment. In the meantime, Harley considers other wardrobe options. For casual, man-on-the-street shots, he selects a baby blue polo and jeans—baby blue, he’s advised by an assistant, will highlight his tan. A makeup artist applies foundation and some eyeliner; a photographer assesses lighting options. Bagels and beverages sit untouched while Pasternak noshes on the whole-grain muffin he brought with him. And then he’s on. Pasternak vamps under the bright lights like a bald Gisele Bündchen.

Tee hee: Toronto Star says Twilight stars James Pattinson

Sure, we all make mistakes, but when a paper runs a story about Twilight and says it stars James Pattinson, we are obliged to take a screen grab. It’s like a blogging rule or something. (Robert Pattinson, a.k.a. the most lusted-after teen heartthrob other than Justin Bieber, is the actor’s actual name.) Both the story, which is credited to Reuters, and the photo caption made the error. Ah, those disgruntled wire reporters.

My Edward Cullen Twilight make-over

twilight1

Norma Hill-Patton works on Style reporter Karon Liu

Even non-Twihards know that associating oneself with the Twilight series is a wise move, so when my editor found out that Norma Hill-Patton, the head makeup artist for New Moon, Catwoman and the last two X-Men movies, would be at the International Make-Up Artist Trade Show at the CNE yesterday, she sent me for an Edward Cullen make-over.
