Mark Wahlberg purchases an exclusive penthouse property in the city that saved his life

(Image: S Pakhrin)

TIFF is still a few months away, but the celebrity sightings are already starting. In the last week alone, Robert Pattinson made an appearance at Goodnight, Martha Stewart dined at O&B Canteen and Rihanna proclaimed her love for the T-dot on Twitter. Then, yesterday, the Toronto Star reported that Mark Wahlberg, the man who would’ve been on one of the two L.A.-bound Boston jets crashed by the 9/11 hijackers were it not for a last-minute trip to Toronto, just bought a $12-million condo in Yorkville. Sure, he didn’t spend a record $28 million on his new digs—but who needs an unnamed international man of mystery when you can have Marky Mark?

SPOTTED: Martha Stewart eats, Rihanna walks and Robert Pattinson drinks

Martha Stewart, Rihanna and Robert Pattinson have been spotted in Toronto

It figures that once the weather gets nice, Toronto is the go-to destination for the stars. If we had this kind of sun all year round, we bet Hogtown could really give Hollywood a run for its money. No, seriously, it seems the city was teeming with celebrities this past week. Check out a roundup of star sightings after the jump.

Our four favourite Canadian moments from the Grammys last night

Arcade Fire win the award of the night as a baffled Barbara Streisand tries to learn the difference between "band" and "album" (Image: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Entertainment)

Last night’s Grammy Awards were both a triumph and kick in the cojones for Canadian music. The Arcade Fire shocked just about everyone by beating out Lady Gaga for the Album of the Year, but Drake and Justin Bieber (who scored six nominations between them) were shut out of all the trophy action. Oh well, at least the Biebs made a (questionable) splash in his white-on-white tuxedo.

Here, our favourite Canadian Grammy moments.

King State of Mind: When did the once-cool King West strip descend into a mess of stretch Hummers, drunken bachelorettes and last-call brawls?

Scenes from a never-ending party

2:45 a.m., Cobra

“Let’s get drunk and fuck! Let’s get drunk and fuck!”

I’m at Cobra, a King West club in a sprawling basement underneath a 19th-century warehouse. In this neighbourhood, the best parties are either deep underground or high above in a rooftop bar. Cobra is decorated like a gothic funhouse, with a wall of glowing skulls and lots of black. The get-drunk-and-fuck directive bleats from a techno remix as coloured lights, inducing a kind of electric synesthesia, pulsate on the basement ceiling. To my left, two girls make out and topple over, knocking down their bottle service glassware. Guys eagerly watch from the sidelines, plotting how to make their move. My teeth chatter from the vibrating bass. I down a shot that’s half Sour Puss and half vodka, proffered by a human Barbie doll bartender.

Justin Bieber continues Internet domination over Lady Gaga, Eminem

When it comes to who makes headlines these days, it turns out hormonal teenage girls with a penchant for dreamy side-swept bangs hold a lot of clout. As such, this post is about Justin Bieber. The 16-year-old heartthrob nabbed four of the top 10 spots on YouTube’s list of most watched music videos in the world this year.

Spectacular! The Michael Jackson circus is coming to town

It was only a matter of time before our favourite recently deceased spectacle got together with our favourite French-Canadian spectacle and said, hey, let’s make an even more spectacular spectacle! No, it’s not a Patrick Swayze–Céline Dion YouTube mash-up; it’s the Cirque du Soleil Michael Jackson Immortal World Tour, touching down in Toronto next October 21.

The $57-million show will feature more than 60 artists in a “celebration of dance and spectacle.” Cirque says it will reinvent its signature style for this show, merging it with “rock ‘n’ roll/pop spectacle and touring it.” Spectacle, spectacle, spectacle.

Battle of the Blades, Season 2, Episode 3: the good, the bad and the snuggly

We are tempted to begin this blog post “Dear Candace Cameron Bure” after the former Full House star and current wife of BOTB front-runner Val Bure tweeted last week’s “The Good, the Bad and the Snuggly” instalment. But enough about our ’80s television obsessions and on to the CanCon at hand.

We return to our regular “who should stay, who should go and who should get it on” assessment, but first, a couple of questions:
1. Did anyone understand the idea behind Val and Katia’s bizarre cup and straw props? (Candace, if you’re reading, feel free to explain.)
2. What was up with Johnny Weir’s toucan hairdo? (The American Olympian was in the audience and will perform on tonight’s results show.)
3. Why all the hideous pleather? Val’s shirt! Theo’s bodysuit! Even judge Sandra Bezic got in on the action, wearing a dress that Rihanna would have trouble pulling off.

Drake and Rihanna: a timeline

What a coincidence: once again, Rihanna has a new album to promote, and once again the tabloids are buzzing about a possible romance between her and Toronto hip-hop superstar Drake. The pair recently recorded a duet that will appear on Rihanna’s upcoming album. Plus, she’s showing up at his concerts and making sure that the paparazzi are there every step of the way. To which we say, Come on, Drake—didn’t you learn your lesson the last time? Here, a brief history of their rocky relationship.

The New York Times loves Drake as much as we do, and maybe more

(Image: Lunchbox LP)

With Drake’s debut album due out next week, the New York Times decided to pay its respects—and by respects, we mean grovel at Drake’s feet for three pages. With woeful descriptions of his past heartbreaks (ahem, Rihanna), emotionally tuned lyrics (we wish someone would tell us our sushi rolls are hotter than wasabi) and defiance of gangster rap conventions, writer Jon Caramanica attempts to elevate the celeb to a new kind of PG hip-hop royalty:

Luxury goods consumers are selfish, DSquared2 designing opening ceremony costumes, Bloomingdale’s in Dubai

The same-sex marriage tee that Urban Outfitters took off shelves

• Beautiful things happen when fashion and athletics collide, and we’re not talking about Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen’s baby. Designers Dean and Dan Caten of DSquared2 have designed, in honour of the Olympics, a $350 maple leaf–logo fleece hoodie to be sold at Holt Renfrew. The twins are also designing the costumes for the Olympics opening and closing ceremonies, which means plenty of sexy lumberjacks and brooding hockey players. [WWD]

A study from Harvard Business School says luxury goods consumers are more likely to make inconsiderate, selfish decisions that harm others. The findings are detailed in an HBS paper called “The Devil Wears Prada? Effects of Exposure to Luxury Goods on Cognition and Decision Making.” It seems money can’t buy love or a conscience. [Harvard Business School]

DSquared2′s Dean and Dan school Ryerson’s fashion students

The Brothers Squared (Photo courtesy of Ryerson University)

While few of Toronto’s fashion students gathered at Ryerson University’s AMC lecture theatres on Friday are likely to achieve the fame DSquared2 designers Dean and Dan Caten have, the twins’ made-in-Canada success story is certainly an inspiration to our budding fashion talents. Interviewed in a lecture hall by Jeanne Beker, the vivacious brothers and their trendy clothing and accessories brand have been much talked-about since receiving the thrust of approval from Madonna, whom they outfitted for the Drowned World Tour in 2001 (and about the last time Madonna wore anything enviable) spoke about the path to fame from Willowdale, Ontario, where they were raised in a family of nine children. The high-end designers have also used pop sexpots Christina Aguilera and Rihanna in their shows.
