TIFF starts tomorrow, so for our last-minute update on what to expect, who to look for and where to go, we sat down with none other than Elaine Lui, a.k.a. Lainey of eTalk and Lainey Gossip.

Where Oprah goes, the congregation will follow—even to Sotto Sotto.

TIFF.TO: What does it mean that Oprah Winfrey is coming to Toronto for the world premiere of Precious?
LAINEY: For a long time I’ve referred to Oprah as ‘The Mighty O’ and use capitalized pronouns when referring to her because people act like she’s God. Sometimes, I feel like she acts like she’s God. So it’s almost like God is coming to Toronto…like we should have a temple or something in her honour.

With two weeks left until the opening gala of the Toronto International Film Festival, reporters gathered at the Hazelton Hotel to get a rundown on the buzziest films (Precious), parties (One X One), possible Oscar contenders (Mo’Nique, the woman from Soul Plane) and TIFF-inspired cocktails (Skyy vodka for all).

CTV film critic Richard Crouse said the Oprah-backed film Precious could mean a possible Oscar nomination for Mo’Nique, while co-star Mariah Carey can finally shake off the tarnished glitter from, well, Glitter. Closing film Young Victoria also got a thumbs-up and was predicted to be Emily Blunt’s big break. But the most intriguing film tidbit (and a brilliant marketing move to boot) was that everyone who went to the pre-screening of Heath Ledger’s last film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, had to sign a waiver that forbid them from talking about it.

Five reasons we’re thrilled Oprah is coming to TIFF

Fan yourself off, Oprah. It's hot in Toronto

Yesterday, we reported that Oprah Winfrey has confirmed her attendance at TIFF—she’ll be here in support of the world premiere of Precious. We can’t wait for every entertainment reporter (ourselves included) to jump on Oprah Watch ’09. But here are five other reasons we’re happy her Harpo-ness will grace Toronto this September.

1) She could Skype in her shows
The new season starts on September 14, smack in the middle of the festival, but since Oprah has been Skype-ing in her guests rather than flying them in from the other side of the country (Oprah loves Skype, we get it), we think she’ll be more than happy to do an entire show via webcam.

Thank you, recession: this year’s free TIFF events are surprisingly wonderful

Synonymous with velvet ropes, lavish parties and celebrities whose annual income rivals the GDP of Palau, the Toronto International Film Festival has never been a particularly thrifty affair—until now. TIFF is getting recession friendly in ’09 by offering expanded free programming at Yonge-Dundas Square (the kind that so irked Rex Reed last year), not to mention some A-list celebrity appearances. “It’s been a tough year for everyone, so everyone deserves a bit of a break,” says festival managing director Michele Maheux. And judging by the press release, it’s good to see they’re not phoning it in with the freebies: planned events include appearances by Neil Young, George A. Romero, Joan Baez, Sapphire and many more.
