The subject-to-change Toronto Fashion Week schedule has been revealed

Chloé Comme Parris, Denis Gagnon and Joe Fresh (Images: Jenna Marie Wakani)

TIFF has come and gone, which means no more red carpet fashion to agonize over until awards season. Thankfully, Toronto Fashion Week runs October 17 to 21 and has just announced its schedule, so we can plan which spring/summer collections we will lust after until the warm weather appears again.  Dad shirt aficionado Robert Graham is new to the roster this year, and Montreal fixture Marie Saint Pierre is sure to be worth the trip to David Pecault Square, but we can’t wait to find out what Chloé Comme Parris has up its sleeves—the duo have been buzzy for the past two seasons, and rumour has it, their spring/summer show is destined to top anything that preceded it (hype builders have to say that, but we’re intrigued). Jay Manuel returns for Sears Attitude, and perhaps there will be less purple faux fur this year, and of course there’s always the splashy shows—with people begging to stand and watch—like Joe Fresh, Pink Tartan and Denis Gagnon. Check out this season’s full schedule (subject to change) after the jump.

Rent a dress, send it back: how to be frugal without having to keep the tags on

These women used to eat peanut butter sandwiches for dinner. (Image: Rent Frock Repeat)

Dropping a couple of mortgage payments on a dress that may be worn only once was not always such a gauche sign of indulgence (insert buzz word: recession). Now, like a DVD at a failing Blockbuster Video, we can rent a dress for a fraction of the price at the newly launched online dress-rental service Rent Frock Repeat, and then, well, send it back when we’re bored of it .

Pink Tartan packs the house with party-goers at LG Fashion Week

That's right, I'm a Mimran (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

The Pink Tartan show is one of the week’s scene-iest, luring in crowds with the promise of seeing (and being seen with) Toronto notables. It often seems the clothes are an afterthought for these supporters of Canadian fashion, but who needs style when we’ve got Canadian celebrities? Last night didn’t disappoint—society mavens like Suzanne Boyd, Suzanne Cohon and The Bay bigwig Nicholas Mellamphy rubbed elbows with Shinan Govani, Adrian Mainella, Harper’s Bazaar editor at large Derek Blasberg and the New York Times’s Sandra Ballentine. See the complete collection, our review and yet another reason we saw front row (and photographer) scowls after the jump.

PHOTO GALLERY: see Pink Tartan’s fall/winter 2011 collection

“Couture-arian” -Kim Newport-Mimran (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Attention! March! Military is a ubiquitous trend for fall/winter, because it isn’t too difficult to look good in something that has been nicely tailored. Pick your size, put it on and, nine times out of 10, it looks pretty good. Kimberley Newport-Mimran clearly agrees: she showed a decidedly safe collection of camo and khaki separates last night at LG Fashion Week. See our full runway coverage below and be sure to check out our coverage of the scene.

Holt Renfrew’s cavalcade of Canadian design at LG Fashion Week’s opening night

Step, pivot, step, step (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Bloor Street West may have lost its mayor, but fans of the hot pink bag arrived at LG Fashion Week’s opening ceremonies last night to support Holt Renfrew’s showcase of Canadian design. Robin Kay opened the festivities with her traditionally laboured speech, this time remarking on the heart and tenacity found within Toronto’s fashion quarters. “We have no excuse but to expose ourselves to the world,” Kay declared. (We were grateful that this did not prompt her to remove her clothing.) See our full photo and scene coverage below.

Jeanne Beker’s clothing line announces expansion—in both waist sizes and availability

Last season's successful edit (Image: The Bay)

The size choices in the most stylish clothing lines are, shall we say, a bit thin. Even when brands include wider waists, very few items are produced, in fear of overstock. The phenomenon is a recurring concern for women who either teeter on or fall into plus sizes. Though most designers ignore this issue due to cost or apathy, the tireless Jeanne Beker has taken it on. Toronto’s famous fashion maven will grow her clothing line, Edit, so that it includes waist sizes from 14 to 22.

Toronto’s LG Fashion Week launched its official fall/winter 2011 calendar this week, and for the second season running, it will call Exhibition Place’s Heritage Court its home. Introducing: Seventy Seven, Pink Tartan’s first Toronto store

Previously the Paisley Shop, 77 Yorkville is now Pink Tartan's flagship store

The place: Pink Tartan has opened its first stand-alone store in one of the city’s oldest buildings, at Yorkville and Bellair. Built in 1837, the townhouse was once home to the Village of Yorkville’s sheriff (and a jail cell), but today, with fresh flowers, sand-coloured hardwood and wallpaper that looks like grey muslin, the two-floor space is less Alcatraz and more Alsace—the boutique feels like a sunny atelier somewhere in France.

Fashion Week Recap: our 10 favourite looks

Fashion week—the only time of year when it’s OK to judge a book by its cover—is over for another season. This season, we saw some impressive clothing from young designers (Amanda Lew Kee, Sunny Fong, Thomas and Chloé Comme Parris among them), a standout collection from Montreal’s Denis Gagnon, and ’70s-inspired looks from Pink Tartan. We lusted after Line’s knits and leathers, and considered wearing a black wedding dress at Romona Keveza. Holt Renfrew brought its favourite Canadian talent—including Toronto native Jeremy Laing—to the runway. We’ve compiled our favourite looks from these memorable fashion shows in this slide show. Do the Hustle! Pink Tartan’s bringing disco back

Is that Donna Summer we hear? (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Kimberley Newport-Mimran took her Pink Tartan line solo last night (it is usually held in conjunction with her husband’s Joe Fresh show), injecting bold colours (tangerine, chartreuse, royal blue) not seen in recent collections. It looked like Newport-Mimran was in a Studio 54 state of mind when she put pen to sketch pad. Elements from the ’70s were everywhere: hot pink jumpsuits, oversized blazers and gorgeous wide-legged tuxedo pants in shimmery black satin. Even the shoes, teeteringly high wooden platforms, screamed Farrah Fawcett glam. Sure, the slinky one-shoulder dresses, one in a candy-striper print, were a little Halston Heritage, but the collection was strong—the designer made green booty shorts and yellow straw hats look sophisticated. If Pink Tartan’s interpretation is what it means to have the ’70s back, we say bring on the disco naps.

Holt Renfrew showcase gives fashion week a major boost

(Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Last season, when one of the best fashion shows was staged not on the official LG runway but inside the Holt Renfrew café, tongues were a-wagging. The country’s top designers (Jeremy Laing, Denis Gagnon and Lida Baday among them) weren’t on the fashion week bill but did present a handful of looks for the intimate preview. So we assume it was a good day for fashion week organizers the FDCC when Holt Renfrew told them it was bringing its stable of Canadian talent to the official schedule and onto the runway. They even made the showcase the week’s opening event. Held last night, the tony department store’s With True Patriot Love presentation featured five looks from nine of the country’s most loved labels—all available at Holts, naturally.
