Year in Review: our 12 favourite looks from Toronto Fashion Weeks 2011

Toronto Fashion Week, while “not New York,” “not Paris” and “not blah, blah, blah,” is still a busy time of year (it happens twice—that’s about one entire month), and our dogs were certainly barking. We looked over our comprehensive runway coverage from fall/winter 2011 and spring/summer 2012 and have pieced together 12 looks that stood out (to us) as the best of the bunch. Say hello to Joe Fresh (yes, seriously), Pink Tartan, Chloé Comme Parris, Calla, and more in our gallery after the jump.

25 awesome Toronto Boxing Day sales that will inspire you to don gay apparel (i.e. pants)

December 26 (or, in some parts, Boxing Day) is one of the worst days to leave the house, especially if the reason for leaving the house is shopping. People become vicious, elbowing single mothers for toasters or an eighth television (because who doesn’t need an eighth television?). But we’ve made some calls and have taken stock of some of the worthwhile deals in the city for men, women and children (and, of course, shops that cater to him and her, the whole family and homeowners) that will take us away from Best Buy, Future Shop or Walmart. Check out 25 safe bets for Boxing Day sales this year after the jump.

We pick 21 of the city’s coolest (and coziest) sweaters, just in time for (a delayed) winter

’Tis the season for saying things like “’tis the season” and being so freezing cold that we’re required to wear an undershirt, some sort of waffle-weave thermal wear, a sweater, a jacket, a scarf, gloves, boots, two pairs of socks and a festive toque. With this is mind, we scoured the city looking for sweaters. We found one that makes us feel nostalgic (the youthful fox sweater from Topshop), one that announces “I’m an adult” (the Theory knit turtleneck from Holt Renfrew), another that’s perfect for a tiny tot (the angora sweater dress from Advice From a Caterpillar) and many more. Check out our 21 picks in a gallery after the jump »

Pink Tartan crafts impeccable clothing for its very consistent spring/summer 2012 collection

TORONTO FASHION WEEK | SEE ALL

The Pink Tartan runway show is always one of the season’s hottest tickets; maybe it’s because the whole affair is a big pleaser for the upper crust (Kimberly Newport-Mimran and her husband Joe have many friends), maybe it’s the stargazing or heck, maybe it’s even the clothes. No matter the reason, there wasn’t an empty seat in the house, which is why we weren’t shocked to hear a cacophony of “Don’t you know who I am?” and “I’m already on the list” from pleading fans. Newport-Mimran’s show brought out names like model Stacey McKenzie (ever demure in a subtle zebra-print onesie with a hood), PR gal Suzanne Cohon, Newport-Mimran’s husband Joe Mimran (of course), philanthropist Catherine Nugent, Teen Vogue’s Gloria Baume, Marie Claire’s Abigail Kalicka and Glamour’s Rachael Wang. Even though people guarded their seats closely, we still spotted some bloggers swooping in at the last second to tweet photos of themselves from the front row, then look at said photos on Twitter—hey, a personal brand wasn’t built in a day. Check out our rundown of the scene, the show and the complete Pink Tartan spring/summer 2012 collection after the jump.

Joe Freezy (also known as Joe Fresh, also known as Joe Mimran) creates exciting menswear for spring/summer 2012

TORONTO FASHION WEEK | SEE ALL We, just like everyone we know, have balked at Joe Fresh for being a grocery store brand at a fashion week—why are people getting excited about $10 crew-neck T-shirts for men and cheap pencil skirts for women? Not to mention that not everything made goes into production, which is problematic when most of the time Joe Mimran is creating plenty of items that his audience wants (cheaply). Last night, Joe Mimran packed his runway with Canadian model powerhouses, including Heather Marks, Liisa Winkler, Kirsten Owen, Alana Zimmer and Yasmine Warsame; even rising-star model Frances Coombe walked in the show (but she’s been working all week and deserves it), proving once again that Joe has the best models (or at the very least the most exciting models). He showed a series of looks that made up a rather cohesive collection, including leathers, neoprene and daisy crochet knits for women, but what we were truly shocked by was the menswear—we’d buy almost all of it, and we’re left wondering: will it ever make it into stores? Our review of the scene, the show and a full gallery of the collection after the jump.

The Weekender: International Festival of Authors, Operanation and six more items on our to do list

1. LG FASHION WEEK
Some of the city’s more fashionable citizens have been accumulating this year behind Roy Thomson Hall to check out what’ll be big next spring from the likes of Pink Tartan, Bustle, Cynthia Rowley and the eminently wearable Joe Fresh. The most high-style week of the year (or one of two, at least) wraps up on Friday with shows by David Dixon and Denis Gagnon. To October 21. Various prices. David Pecaut Square (formerly Metro Square), King St. W. between John and Simcoe streets, lgfashionweek.ca.

2. INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF AUTHORS
Once again it’s storytime for grownups (and very precocious children) at Harbourfront. Big-name writers like Michael Ondaatje, Miriam Toews, Johanna Skibsrud and Douglas Coupland will be taking part in panels, book signings and, most importantly, readings at this 12-day literary fest. To October 30. $10-$35. Harbourfront Centre, 235 Queens Quay W., 416-973-4000, readings.org.

The subject-to-change Toronto Fashion Week schedule has been subject to change

Amanda Lew Kee, Jay Manuel and Chloé Comme Parris (Images: Jenna Marie Wakani)

TORONTO FASHION WEEK | SEE ALL Fashion trends change almost every minute, and so do fashion week schedules—as we promised, there have been plenty of changes that should be noted. Nothing scandalous to report, unfortunately (no one has pulled out yet, but give it time), but the gang is still here, just in a newly mashed-up order: sister team Chloé Comme Parris, Joe Fresh, Arthur Mendonça, Denis Gagnon, Pink Tartan, Vawk, Joeffer Caoc, everyone’s favourite Attitude by Jay Manuel and much, much more. The complete schedule (which could change again, but we’re hoping it won’t) after the jump.

The subject-to-change Toronto Fashion Week schedule has been revealed

Chloé Comme Parris, Denis Gagnon and Joe Fresh (Images: Jenna Marie Wakani)

TORONTO FASHION WEEK | SEE ALL TIFF has come and gone, which means no more red carpet fashion to agonize over until awards season. Thankfully, Toronto Fashion Week runs October 17 to 21 and has just announced its schedule, so we can plan which spring/summer collections we will lust after until the warm weather appears again.  Dad shirt aficionado Robert Graham is new to the roster this year, and Montreal fixture Marie Saint Pierre is sure to be worth the trip to David Pecault Square, but we can’t wait to find out what Chloé Comme Parris has up its sleeves—the duo have been buzzy for the past two seasons, and rumour has it, their spring/summer show is destined to top anything that preceded it (hype builders have to say that, but we’re intrigued). Jay Manuel returns for Sears Attitude, and perhaps there will be less purple faux fur this year, and of course there’s always the splashy shows—with people begging to stand and watch—like Joe Fresh, Pink Tartan and Denis Gagnon. Check out this season’s full schedule (subject to change) after the jump.

Rent a dress, send it back: how to be frugal without having to keep the tags on

These women used to eat peanut butter sandwiches for dinner. (Image: Rent Frock Repeat)

Dropping a couple of mortgage payments on a dress that may be worn only once was not always such a gauche sign of indulgence (insert buzz word: recession). Now, like a DVD at a failing Blockbuster Video, we can rent a dress for a fraction of the price at the newly launched online dress-rental service Rent Frock Repeat, and then, well, send it back when we’re bored of it .

Pink Tartan packs the house with party-goers at LG Fashion Week

That's right, I'm a Mimran (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

The Pink Tartan show is one of the week’s scene-iest, luring in crowds with the promise of seeing (and being seen with) Toronto notables. It often seems the clothes are an afterthought for these supporters of Canadian fashion, but who needs style when we’ve got Canadian celebrities? Last night didn’t disappoint—society mavens like Suzanne Boyd, Suzanne Cohon and The Bay bigwig Nicholas Mellamphy rubbed elbows with Shinan Govani, Adrian Mainella, Harper’s Bazaar editor at large Derek Blasberg and the New York Times’s Sandra Ballentine. See the complete collection, our review and yet another reason we saw front row (and photographer) scowls after the jump.

PHOTO GALLERY: see Pink Tartan’s fall/winter 2011 collection

“Couture-arian” -Kim Newport-Mimran (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Attention! March! Military is a ubiquitous trend for fall/winter, because it isn’t too difficult to look good in something that has been nicely tailored. Pick your size, put it on and, nine times out of 10, it looks pretty good. Kimberley Newport-Mimran clearly agrees: she showed a decidedly safe collection of camo and khaki separates last night at LG Fashion Week. Holt Renfrew’s cavalcade of Canadian design at LG Fashion Week’s opening night

Step, pivot, step, step (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Bloor Street West may have lost its mayor, but fans of the hot pink bag arrived at LG Fashion Week’s opening ceremonies last night to support Holt Renfrew’s showcase of Canadian design. Robin Kay opened the festivities with her traditionally laboured speech, this time remarking on the heart and tenacity found within Toronto’s fashion quarters. “We have no excuse but to expose ourselves to the world,” Kay declared. (We were grateful that this did not prompt her to remove her clothing.) See our full photo and scene coverage below.

Jeanne Beker’s clothing line announces expansion—in both waist sizes and availability

Last season's successful edit (Image: The Bay)

The size choices in the most stylish clothing lines are, shall we say, a bit thin. Even when brands include wider waists, very few items are produced, in fear of overstock. The phenomenon is a recurring concern for women who either teeter on or fall into plus sizes. Though most designers ignore this issue due to cost or apathy, the tireless Jeanne Beker has taken it on. Toronto’s famous fashion maven will grow her clothing line, Edit, so that it includes waist sizes from 14 to 22.
