Toronto’s newest beach opens, David Miller suggests skinny dipping

After waiting for years for anything to happen on our derelict, post-industrial waterfront, it seems like something opens every couple months. Today’s ribbon cutting: Canada’s Sugar Beach, a new park across from the still-active (and pungent) Redpath sugar refinery, and the first section of the Water’s Edge Promenade to the east.

Father’s Day gift idea: a portable barbecue for $60

(Image: Bodum.com)

Bodum, best known for ingenious kitchen tools in Popsicle hues, has come out with its first barbecue. The charcoal-burning unit ($60) is picnic perfect—its lid fastens to the base for easy portability, and the handle is coated in silicone (oven mitts not required). Measuring just over a foot wide, it’s large enough for a round of burgers. The barbecue is still in short supply in Toronto, but Junors has the black version now with other colours on order.

Junors, Shops at Don Mills, 1090 Don Mills Rd., 416-385-3737.

Where to eat lunch this week: Cruda Café

This raw food café brings fresh life to St. Lawrence Market with dishes even a carnivore will love

The place: The two-month-old raw food joint (“cruda” is Spanish for “raw”) is the brainchild of chef Claudia Gaviria, who proudly offers mostly uncooked options to office dwellers who work too far from Rawlicious or Urban Herbivore. Tucked away in the northeast corner of the lower level, Cruda is a welcome reprieve from the market’s long-standing deep-fried lunch options. Don’t be turned off by the “raw” and “vegan” labels; this is satisfying food by any standard.
