How bullying became the crisis of a generation

Kids are committing suicide, parents are in a panic, and schools that neglect to protect students are lawsuit targets

The Bully Mob

Mitchell Wilson had a short life. He was born in March 2000 at Markham-Stouffville Hospital to Craig and Shelley Wilson. From the age of three, he had trouble running and jumping. He climbed stairs slowly, putting both feet on each step before moving up. He fell often, and sometimes he couldn’t get up on his own. His doctors thought he had hypermobility syndrome—joints that extend and bend more than normal.

When Mitchell was seven, his mother was diagnosed with an aggressive melanoma. Her treatments left her distant, sometimes testy and mean, and in so much pain that she rarely left her bedroom. “I sort of kept Mitchell away,” Craig Wilson told me.

“He basically didn’t talk to his mother during the last four months of her life.” Wilson often left his son to his own devices while he took care of his dying wife and ran his family’s industrial knife business. Mitchell spent most of his time in his bedroom, playing video games. He comforted himself with food, and by the time he was four feet tall he weighed 167 pounds. Once, in a Walmart, he fell to the ground and his grandmother had to ask store employees to help her lift him.

Toronto takes first and second place in this year’s best washroom competition; see why

(Image: Cintas Canada)

After losing out to Vancouver last year, Toronto has ascended the, erm, throne in Cintas’s annual Canada’s Best Restroom contest (no, we’re not entirely sure why this exists, either, but why not?). This year, first place went to E11even, MLSE’s iPad-toting fine-dining restaurant, with second-place honours going to the Allstream Centre (a.k.a. that conference centre out at Exhibition Place). The five finalists were selected, according to a press release, “based on exceptional hygiene, style, public accessibility and usability,” after which the public got to have its say through an online vote. So what makes E11even’s washrooms so special? Huge expanses of marble, mosaic tiling and judicious use of the Toto washlet, which is basically the modern incarnation of the bidet (glimpse the future at Toto’s website). The LEED silver restrooms at the Allstream Centre, meanwhile, feature a carpeted makeup lounge (in the ladies’ room), complete with individually illuminated mirrors with walnut accents. In third, fourth and fifth place were Montreal’s Hôtel Le Germain, Edmonton’s David Morris Fine Cars and the Ottawa Convention Centre. Check out a slideshow of E11even’s winning w/c, after the jump

Jesse Brown: how big wireless companies, the banks, and even the actors’ union are keeping our mobile bills the highest in the world

Give Us Your MoneyGetting gouged by cellphone providers is such a routine part of life in Canada that it barely seems worth complaining about. Yet we complain all the time. We trade tales of shocking bills and awful customer service at every opportunity. We complain to friends and we complain to strangers. I complain professionally. To be a technology journalist in Canada is to constantly feed the nation’s seething consumer outrage.

Yes, Canadians pay higher monthly wireless bills than citizens of any other country, according to a report by Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Yes, our data roaming fees are higher than those in any other country, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Yes, a cartel of three carriers—Bell, Rogers and Telus—still controls 95 per cent of our market, despite the emergence of budget providers Wind, Public and Mobilicity. And yes, text message fees in Canada are ridiculously marked up, by as much as 4,900 per cent, according to academic estimates. Each story solidifies our right to kvetch. We truly are the most screwed-over cellphone users in the world.

VIA Rail reveals just what a $923-million investment will buy you

Earlier this week VIA Rail announced its plan for a slew of service upgrades, the result of the biggest government investments in the company’s history: $516 million in 2007 and $407 million in 2009. The improvements include refurbished passenger cars, station renovations (plus a few brand new ones), more trains and reduced trip times for the well-travelled Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal corridor. In particular, there will be twice as many trains between Toronto and Ottawa, meaning you can enjoy lunch at Fran’s down by Union Station and still make it to Bistro St. Jacques for dinner. Brad Long nabs Ottawa’s Charlotte Langley to run the kitchen at Café Belong

Langley’s chicken-fried tuna and waffles adorn Ottawa Magazine’s best restaurants cover

Ottawa chef Charlotte Langley has got talent, looks and a sailor’s mouth. Lucky for us, she’s also moving to Toronto. The young chef is bound for Café Belong on December 1, where she will become chef de cuisine under food TV star Brad Long, whom she partnered with at the Canadian Celebrity Chefs Event earlier this year. Langley will be leaving The Whalesbone Oyster House behind, where she was executive chef.

Tim Hudak spent his life climbing the Tory ladder and now he has a shot at taking over Queen’s Park—but can he convince voters he’s more than just Mike Harris lite?

Tim Hudak

Tim Hudak is riding in the back of an RV, a big, bouncy RV wrapped in an enormous picture of his smiling face, and he’s coming to see you. He’s really happy. So happy that he’s tweeting about it on his BlackBerry. “Outstanding,” he types, and, “On my way…” Now he’s peering out the front window, over the driver’s shoulder, toward one of the event venues where he’s going to meet you. “Shit, has this thing started?” He doesn’t want to be late. He wants to look you in the eyes and tell you what he thinks, and he wants to listen to you, too. The whole big meet-and-greet ball of wax: he loves it. This is who he is. “It gets in your blood, right?” he asks. Although that’s not actually a question. Putting “right?” at the end of certain things he says is just Tim Hudak’s way. “You are who you are, right?” he says. “I’m Tim Hudak.”
