Camera: a who’s who of Canadian cinema gathers at the Lightbox to kick off TIFF’s retrospective of Norman Jewison films

Camera: Norman Jewison Bash

Canadian film honcho Wayne Clarkson with art house icon Atom Egoyan and Lynne St. David-Jewison

August 11, Malaparte.

An air-kissing who’s who of Canadian cinema gathered on the sixth floor of the Lightbox to kick off Justice for All, TIFF’s retrospective of the films of Norman Jewison. One of Hollywood’s most prolific directors, Jewison is the kind of success story this city loves to laud at every opportunity. Following the reception, everyone shuffled downstairs for a screening of Moonstruck, Jewison’s 1987 rom-com. The crowd was also treated to a Q&A with Olympia Dukakis and the screenwriter John Patrick Shanley (both snagged Oscars for the movie). But it was Jewison who got the loudest applause, for dropping a well-aimed F-bomb while recounting an on-set incident: Nicolas Cage demanded a moment to think over a line, and Jewison replied: “Don’t think, just say the fucking line.” Beats watching Moonstruck at home in your PJs for the umpteenth time.

TIFF PHOTO GALLERY: Nicolas Cage has the assembled media eating out of his hand at the press conference for Joel Schumacher’s Trespass

When Nicolas Cage is in the room, it’s impossible to look anywhere else (really). From the moment he sat down, answering questions about Joel Schumacher’s Trespass with a degree of intensity and thoughtfulness that we’re sure surprised many, all eyes were fixed on the actor. He delivered lines from the film in character, did his best impression of Werner Herzog and playfully shared the story the film is predicated upon: “I woke up and there was a naked man wearing my leather jacket and eating a Fudgsicle at the foot of my bed. It sounds funny, but it wasn’t.”

TIFF PHOTO GALLERY: Nicolas Cage walks the red carpet for Joel Schumacher’s Trespass

After charming the assembled press corps with tales of a naked man eating a Fudgsicle in his bed at the press conference for Trespass, Nicolas Cage charmed his screaming fans at the red carpet at Roy Thomson Hall for the new Joel Schumacher flick, signing autographs the entire length of the carpet from underneath an umbrella. Seriously, Cage is a charmer (and, frankly, we’re kind of surprised). Unfortunately, his co-star in the film, Nicole Kidman, wasn’t in attendance (she’s currently shooting another picture in the U.S.). But no matter, Cage and Schumacher managed to delight fans without her. See our photo gallery, after the jump.

Nicolas Cage is a sad wine drinker and Maggie Gyllenhaal wears sweatpants at the Soho Metropolitan Hotel last night

Nicolas Cage (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

Outside of the Soho Metropolitan Hotel, fans gathered to catch a glimpse of Nicolas Cage at his Trespass after-party, and to be perfectly honest, most of the action was happening outside of the Euro beat–heavy clubland inside. We spotted Hysteria’s Maggie Gyllenhaal in “couture” sweatpants and glasses exiting an elevator, seeming eager to distance herself from the afternoons-in-Ibiza party that was happening in the hotel (she was staying there), but apart from these two star sightings, the biggest name we spotted was Massari. Check out the scene and find out what desperate measures some partygoers took to see Cage after the jump.

QUOTED: Nicolas Cage on his hilarious, horrifying home invasion

I opened my eyes and there was a naked man wearing my leather jacket eating a Fudgesicle in front of my bed. I know it sounds funny … but it was horrifying.

New TIFF News: eight galas and 17 special presentations added to the roster

The TIFF news keeps pouring in, with the festival announcing today the addition of eight galas (those splashy parties everyone wants to crash) and 17 special presentations, totalling 25 additions, 14 of which are world premieres. This brings the final number of galas this season to 20 (that’s a whole lot of free champagne) and the number of special presentations to 67. At TIFF, there’ll be a star for everyone, like brawny action dudes Jason Statham, Clive Owen (who has two movies premiering) and Gerard Butler, French actress Catherine Deneuve (so engaging we’d watch her eat Kraft dinner and do laundry), TV stars Adam Brody and Alexis Bledel (who taught us that the best way to solve complex teen problems is to talk really, really fast) and mega-stars Robert DeNiro, Nicole Kidman and Nicolas Cage.

From the Archives: a look back on TIFF’s most memorable moments

Oh, Snap
This month, the Toronto International Film Festival celebrates its 35th year with a glossy new home in the Bell Lightbox. Much has changed since the inaugural year, when Hollywood studios turned up their noses at the fledging fest. Then again, much hasn’t. It’s still two weeks of celebrities and fans behaving badly. Here, a look back on TIFF’s most memorable moments, from the coke-fuelled ’70s to the paparazzi-riddled oughties.

British actor Bill Nighy is mobbed by fans with poor taste in hats outside the Windsor Arms last night (Photo by Jen McNeely)

“We want the king, we want the king!”

At first we couldn’t decipher what the overzealous crowd was chanting, but as we drew closer to the masses outside the Windsor Arms, it became clear that it was not the king they wanted but the Cage. Nicolas, that is. The mob was gaining momentum and force, so when British actor Bill Nighy exited the hotel, an emergency PR situation dominoed: fans surged forward, magazines slapped magazines at Nighy and women on walkie-talkies were frantically trying to locate his driver. Cops had to buffer the mania so Nighy could escape. As he wandered in the direction of Theatre Books, all we could hear him say was “Where the fuck? What the fuck? Fuck!” An intense female wrangler yelled, “Bill—back inside!” She shouted louder, “Bill! Inside, let’s go!” ushering him in haste back in the embrace of the Windsor Arms. By the urgency in her tone, we thought the fans were about ready to rip his flesh off, like a scene from Shaun of the Dead.

Nicolas Cage on being a believable drug addict and why he won’t do Shakespeare

Nicolas Cage at the press conference for Bad Lieutenant (Photo by Karon Liu)

Perhaps it was naive to expect the real-life Nicolas Cage to be like the characters he portrays in The Wicker Man and The Knowing: paranoid and running around looking concerned. Still, the Oscar-winner, in town to promote Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, had his share of head-scratching quotes in between gushing about working with director Werner Herzog at yesterday’s press conference.

Canada’s queen of gossip, Lainey, tells us what she knows about the coming of Oprah, Mariah, Clooney, Cage and more

TIFF starts tomorrow, so for our last-minute update on what to expect, who to look for and where to go, we sat down with none other than Elaine Lui, a.k.a. Lainey of eTalk and Lainey Gossip.

Where Oprah goes, the congregation will follow—even to Sotto Sotto.

TIFF.TO: What does it mean that Oprah Winfrey is coming to Toronto for the world premiere of Precious?
LAINEY:
For a long time I’ve referred to Oprah as ‘The Mighty O’ and use capitalized pronouns when referring to her because people act like she’s God. Sometimes, I feel like she acts like she’s God. So it’s almost like God is coming to Toronto…like we should have a temple or something in her honour.
