Where to Buy Now: Davisville Village, because it’s the last place under $1 million off Yonge

Where to Buy Now | Davisville Village

Families eager for a midtown address without the Summerhill prices have one last hope. “Davisville’s probably the only off-Yonge pocket left for a house between $600,000 and $800,000,” says John Pasalis of the brokerage Realosophy Realty. “Anywhere else, its unheard of for that price range.”

Cuisine of India, an old North York favourite, reopens in Davisville

Cuisine of India’s new interior features their signature peacock motif

It’s been over a year since the North York Indian stalwart Cuisine of India closed its doors. Now, the once-beloved restaurant is reopening in midtown with a revamped vision, transplanting its trademark menu into a somewhat hipper new ’hood, with grab-and-go options and an unfussy ambiance.

Weekly Lunch Pick: the sumptuous tawük lunch plate at Tabülè

The tender barbecued chicken at Tabülè

This Middle Eastern restaurant is a midtown favourite—the room is already packed when we arrive for lunch. Our order of tawük ($8.95), recommended by an attentive server, features grilled nuggets of naturally raised Mennonite chicken parked next to a mountain of fluffy rice studded with vermicelli and fried onions. Like an ode to the perfect summer barbecue, the breast meat is moist under its light, charred crust and acts as the perfect foil to a large side of fattoush ($1.50 extra)—a refreshing salad of rough-chopped cucumber and tomatoes, sliced red onion and torn, toasted pita chips doused with a tart sumac dressing. We wash everything down with a tall tumbler of orange blossom-spiked lemonade ($3.95) and think of the warm weather to come.

The cost: $19, not including tax and tip

The time: 37 minutes

Tabülè, 2009 Yonge St. (at Glebe Rd. E.), 416-483-3747, tabule.ca.

(Image: Renée Suen, from the torontolife.com Flickr pool)

January is upon us, and for many hungry Torontonians, that means one thing: Winterlicious. The menus are less predictable than previous years—crème brûlée’s out,  lentils du Puy are in—so even the ’Licious haters might have a reason to take advantage of the festival this year. We’ve already named the 12 menus that we think are the best bets, but that doesn’t begin to cover it. Here, find Toronto Life’s 62 favourite Winterlicious restaurants, complete with menus, reviews and reservation numbers.

Winterlicious runs from January 28 to February 10. Reservations are accepted from January 13 onward (January 11 for American Express users).

12 best bets for Winterlicious 2011: our chief critic goes through the menus so you don’t have to

A steak dinner at Noce (Image: Renée Suen)

Big-spending downtown Torontonians have taken in the past few years to whining about Winterlicious, but the two-week dining festival, running from January 28 through February 10, remains popular for a reason: it offers great value, particularly if you choose your reservations well. Here are a dozen of Toronto Life’s best bets. They’re older, more established places, generally, with kitchens that clearly care. And though we haven’t yet tasted the restaurants’ 2011 Winterlicious menus, they’re full of interesting, delicious-sounding picks.

The Chase: two sisters show us how to find a Toronto condo on a tight deadline

THE BUYERS
Madeleine Kline, a 63-year-old former school secretary, and her sister Nicole Fasano, a 55‑year-old retiree who worked in book publishing.

THE STORY
When Fasano’s husband died in 2009, she decided to sell her Oakville house and move to Toronto with her daughter Casey (a 28-year-old interior designer, still living with Mom to build her savings). Meanwhile, Kline, who also lived in Oakville, wanted to move closer to her own daughter at Yonge and St. Clair. The sisters decided to combine their resources. Their limit was $500,000, enough for two bedrooms and a den (for Casey) in a building with a pool (Kline has MS and needs a pool for physiotherapy). They had to act fast: both Oakville homes sold in March and had end-of-April closing dates.

The great scapes: five ways that Toronto chefs are using garlic shoots

A bunch of garlic scapes (Image: Joe Shlabotnik)

For the past few weeks, garlic scapes have been cropping up on menus throughout the city. An early summer treat, these shoots are the sweeter, mellower off-growth of the more pungent bulbs that come later in the season (cutting them from young plants helps the bulbs grow plumper). But as they are delectable in their own right, scapes have lately found a following from locavore chefs. Below, five ways of the best ways to enjoy scapes in Toronto right now.

Heather Reisman not invincible: Pistachio’s Yorkdale mall location to close

The Yonge and Eg Pistachio location will remain open (Image: Google)

Not even a powerhouse like Heather Reisman could withstand the economic downturn. The Indigo CEO is closing the Yorkdale location of her green lifestyle and stationery shop Pistachio, reports Quill and Quire. Indigo has yet to make an official comment on the closing, but a sign went up in the store window last week—merchandise is now marked down between 35 and 75 per cent—and a staffer has said the last day of business will be March 31.

The large Yonge and Eglinton location, once home to modern furniture store Nestings, will remain open, though businesses in that area have been quick to turn over in the past year.

Unsurprisingly, cooking class registration increases in the weeks after Christmas, as wannabe chefs redeem gifts of culinary education. Those shopping around for just the right present will find options for any taste and talent level, with seminars on everything from making chocolate to tasting cheese or learning how to fry an Indian dosa. For romance, try a couples class; for kitchen newbies, there are beginner chef series. Below, our list of nine Toronto teaching kitchens and the gift-worthy classes they offer this December.

Just opened: Carbon makes its footprint on midtown

The casual-cool menswear shop Carbon stocks such feel-good brands as Shared and Alternative Apparel (Photo by Karon Liu)

Consider Carbon, the new jeans and T-shirt boutique on the Yonge strip north of Eglinton, more as owner Alex Mazelow’s giant walk-in closet than a casual menswear shop. For one thing, Mazelow has tried on everything in the store (he was testing out a new pair of Ever jeans when we dropped by), and he has played mannequin for women shopping for their absent boyfriends.

Just Opened: Do My Hair blow-dry bar opens today

Salon owner Deborah McGrath says the blow-dry business is recession proof (Photo by Karon Liu)

When a client leaves the salon, the inevitable countdown from having an impeccable do to having a flat, windblown bird’s nest begins. So consider the freshly opened Do My Hair blow-dry bar (the inclusion of the word “dry” is imperative) a pit stop between cuts.

For $32 ($22 for men), women will have their tresses washed and styled in about half and hour—ideal for a post-gym, pre-dinner touch-up or before a stressful job interview.

Unlike at typical hair salons, part of the store’s policy is to encourage walk-ins, rather than keep appointment books, says owner Deborah McGrath, who comes from a corporate consulting background. “A hair appointment is supposed to make life easier, but I find that my entire day has to revolve around that one appointment, which defeats the purpose.”
