The Pink Tartan show, where even hockey players Luke Schenn and Tie Domi came to party

(Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

The Pink Tartan show was one of the hottest tickets at fashion week. The front row was packed with Toronto’s glitterati, like Weston family scion Galen Jr. with his wife, Alexandra, Stacey McKenzie, Dan Levy, club impresario Michael King, plastic surgeon Trevor Born, Shinan Govani, CBC-ers Zaib Shaikh of Little Mosque on the Prairie and Arlene Dickinson of Dragons’ Den and, perhaps strangest of all, Toronto Maple Leaf Luke Schenn and ex-Leaf Tie Domi. The show even pulled Jeanne Beker out of the woodwork; she had recently tweeted, “Wondering why I haven’t been tweeting from LGFW? It’s Passover, and sorry, but family rules over fashion!” Every available seat was filled and aisles were packed, creating what certainly must have been a fire code violation as the models started their walk. Kimberley Newport-Mimran put out a collection of tasteful knits, aviator caps (somehow, they worked), dresses and, of course, fur (used cleverly in full and flouncy skirts), which has been seen in many of the collections this season.

Shinanigans ensue at Holts Café book bash

Amid TIFF hoopla, the National Post’s society and celebrity ink slinger, Shinan Govani, held a launch for his book Boldface Names at the Holts Café—an event that seemed to procure more boldface names than Vanity Fair’s tiresome TIFF party the night prior. The event condensed every big schmoozer-boozer in the city, culminating in champagne-induced strategic chit-chat, name-dropping and back-handed gossip.

Few parties in Toronto could hope to pull in so many prominent figures. Here’s a run-down of the crowd: Jeff Stober owner of the Drake Hotel, Amber’s Toufik Tarwa, ever-so-tanned club king Michael King, Zoomer’s Suzanne Boyd, Society dolls Ashleigh Dempster and Amanda Blakley, Ben Mulroney of eTalk, Roots founder Michael Budman, Fashion Television’s Glen Baxter, Hello! Canada’s Ciara Hunt, brash book agent Sam Hiyate, Bustle’s design man Shawn Hewson, PR powerwomen Debra Goldblatt and Natasha Koiffman, actor Kristin Booth, singer Jill Barber, the Globe’s Leah McLaren (who rode her bike into Holt Renfrew) and a sprinkle of hot-to-trot 20-somethings that brought just the right amount of sexiness to mill about the lingerie section.

Harry Rosen party turns into an electro mash-up extravaganza with Steve Nash

When we arrived at the Harry Rosen party last night (the event’s special guest was Steve Nash) we knew exactly what we were getting into. Virtually every guest (mostly older men) wore head-to-toe black. The music was slow, low, ambient house—loud enough to be noticed, but not nearly so distracting as to take away from conversations about which BlackBerry model one is carrying.

Once conversations turned to Peter Mansbridge, we knew we were in for quite an evening. Fellow guests were heard remarking how “the market is recovering” and talking about where they summered. “Oh, you’re a broker, too?” was a commonly heard remark. When the DJ played a mash up of the Ghostbusters theme with Michael Jackson’s “Bad” and the room remained stoic, we knew we were in trouble.

Go west: The Saint brings some King Street style to the Ossington strip

Adam

Saintly partners: Giancarlo Spataro and Adam Graham

For the past two years, trendspotters’ eyes have been fixed on the Ossington Avenue strip. And now the ’hood is getting a fresh infusion of talent from the downtown core. The boys behind King West bistro Brassaii are opening The Saint, a new gastro-pub at 227 Ossington, in mid-April. The forecast feel? Swank style meets community comfort—that is, if the community embraces it.
