Sarah Polley’s Take this Waltz is one of this year’s Galas

TIFF unveiled part of its 2011 lineup today, and 53 movies will have their North American or world premieres in Toronto this fall. Among the spectators at the press conference this morning in Toronto was a solitary celebrity—actress and director Sarah Polley—but expect lots of boldface names in the city come September. Directors whose films are slated for this year’s fest include Lars von Trier, Francis Ford Coppola and Marc Forster, and they could come accompanied by such stars as Olivia Wilde, Juliette Binoche, Carey Mulligan, Blake Lively, Glenn Close, Vincent Cassel and Ice Cube (yes, of the famed Are We There Yet? and Friday). Those are just some of the famous faces that we’re hoping to spot at Sassafraz, pop-up nightclubs and the latest TIFF venue, The Princess of Wales Theatre. We’ve compiled a full list below.

Is it just us, or were significant others one of the most commonly spotted red carpet accessories? Nicole, Jon, Megan (to name a few) all showed off their better halves at their premieres. With the festival wrapped up for another year, a look back at this year’s most memorable couples in our slide show below.

What it is: Bask-It-Style presented a media lounge in the Royal York’s Prime Minister’s suite to preview the swag it will be giving stars. Rather than make the celebs trudge all the way downtown (after all, that Avenue Road and Bloor construction makes travel a nightmare), Bask-It delivers pieces to the Hollywood bigwigs’ suites.

Who gets it: Such celebs as Megan Fox and Mickey Rourke have already been sent bags.

What they get: Like in many celeb gift bags, there are plenty of skin care products, like Cargo cosmetics, Emergen-C serum, Mistura Beauty 6-in-1 solution and $100 gift certificates to Toronto’s PureMed Spa. Anyone who couldn’t bring their own Harley Pasternak to the Great White North can work out with Farhan Dhalla’s Mind, Ball and Soul DVDs. And to cure the inescapable TIFF hunger (press junkets and screenings and parties don’t leave much time for eating), Old Dutch offers up a hearty bag of chips.

What it is: RealTV Films’ Social Media Lounge (vying for the longest gifting-lounge title this TIFF) has partnered with Chic Little Devil, an L.A.-based style boutique, to offer celebs swag, make-overs, food and booze. Many of the products aren’t to give away but to showcase; and the space offers film people a place to hang out and decompress near the TIFF epicentre, the  Bell Lightbox.

Who goes: TIFF hot commodities Emily Hampshire (who wore an Herve Leger-style dress from Chic Little Devil to the Alliance Films Party) and Katie Boland, Tara Spencer-Nairn of Corner Gas, and Playboy Bunny Bridget Marquardt have all stopped in. Guests expected this week are Megan Fox, Jamie Kennedy and Keshia Chanté.

What they get: Marquardt left with a gifted piece from jewellery designer Feri, and Hampshire and Boland borrowed dresses from Chic Little Devil for their nights on the town. Celebs looking to channel their inner rock star (or at least their inner Rock Band star) can check out electronic instruments from You Rock Guitars, which double as real git-boxes and as Guitar Hero controllers. As with most lounges, makeup and hair services are available, this time from Brennen Demelo Studio and Winks Eyelash boutique. Our favourite was the Ed Hardy water bottle we received in our gift bag. We’d look amazing at the gym, if we ever went.

Ellen Page: The ultimate no-frills girl lets her kick-ass footwear do the talking. We can’t tell if that’s a rip on her shirt or a mustard stain. We hope it’s the latter because that girl needs to eat a sandwich.
Megan Fox: The newlywed keeps the honeymoon going in bridal ivory—she brought hubby Brian Austin Green along last night for the premiere of Passion Play. Now if only there was something we could do about that ridiculous Marilyn Monroe tattoo.
Liana Liberato: The up-and-comer, who stars in David Schwimmer’s Trust, is new on the scene and 15, which means we almost forgive her for this Prince-meets-Elvira effort. Almost.
Liv Tyler is pretty close to fashion perfection in anything-but-basic black. Coco would be proud.

Fan frenzy descended over the Ryerson Theatre last night as vampy vixen Megan Fox walked the red carpet with her Passion Play co-stars Bill Murray and Mickey Rourke.

While it’s common knowledge that being the presence of celebrities can render a person into a giddy puddle of goo, Friday night’s Passion Play gala at the Ryerson Theatre brought out a mixed bag of emotions among fans: confusion and entitlement, hatred and horniness.

Ryerson is the TIFF cinema where plebs can get closest to the celebs. That’s also its greatest flaw: with the fan pit is so close to the red carpet, publicists and posses usually get in the way, drawing ire from the fans that lined up for three hours to see the night’s biggest star, Megan Fox. Some of the jock-frat types gave up all together, preferring to hang back and give interviews about where Fox lands on the hotness scale (nine, apparently).

“Move! No one wants to see you,” a women yelled at the TIFF carpet organizers. “It’s like they get off on pissing us off.”

Another whined, “Why is she talking to ET for so long? They should ask one question and that’s it.”

Meanwhile, co-star Mickey Rourke walked towards the fans to sign autographs. A Japanese exchange student jumped up and down with glee when Rourke scribbled his initials on her notebook. “I got it! I got it!” she beamed while slapping our shoulders. When he left to do more interviews, she leaned over to us and asked, “Excuse me, who is that?”

Amigo
Writer-director John Sayles goes the no-stars route again (à la Men With Guns) with this movie about an American soldier embroiled in the early-20^th-century Philippine-American War. The always well-intentioned Sayles tends to be at his most maladroit when tackling overtly political, large-canvas tales such as this, but we’ll cross our fingers anyway.
Score: 2

The Bang Bang Club
Best known as a TV documentarian, director Steven Silver makes his feature debut with an adaptation of the 2001 non-fiction tome about four young, white South African combat photographers. The actors—Ryan Phillippe, Taylor Kitsch—aren’t exactly A-list, but the film looks intriguing because the photogs aren’t supposed to be journalist heroes, but reckless, morally compromised individuals.
Score: 3

Barney’s Version

Black Swan
The hype is high for this one. Judging by the trailer, director Darren Aronofsky has returned to the hysterical, fevered style of his Requiem for a Dream with this ballet-world takeoff of All About Eve. Our guess: the setting (and star Natalie Portman) will imbue the film with a touch of class, but not enough to conceal its gaudy B-movie heart.

Buried
127 Hours
One film stars Ryan Reynolds as a man trapped in a coffin, while the other stars James Franco as a man trapped under a boulder. Our guess is that the former, Buried, will be the better film, because all it wants to be is an entertaining genre exercise. 127 Hours, however, is based on the true story of unfortunate hiker Aron Ralston and will thus be burdened by seriousness and likely seem as long as its title. (Plus, does anyone really want to see a guy cut his own arm off with a dull army knife?)

Brad Pitt and George Clooney may not be coming to TIFF this year, but the film festival is anticipating that such celebs as Megan Fox, Clint Eastwood and Jon Hamm will draw large numbers of paparazzi, which is why the paparazzi rules are changing. In the past, red-carpet-side spots were doled out via a lottery system, with photographers jockeying for good placement. According to the Hollywood Reporter, media will now have to e-mail festival organizers each morning with a list of events they’d like to cover and will receive a reply e-mail saying whether they’ve been approved for an assigned place on the red carpet.

Placement is not guaranteed and will be determined by each film’s “audience, reach and geography.” We assume that means larger publications and television will get first dibs, so bloggers, get a florist on speed dial and start buttering up those TIFF PRs.

1978

Festival judge Robbie Robertson orders the Plaza II Hotel’s entire stash of Dom Perignon within an hour of arriving. TIFF director Wayne Clarkson shows up to investigate (the Festival was still picking up celebrity tabs then) and finds what he calls “a true rock-and-roll fornicatorium.”

The Ontario Censor Board shows some prude attitude by banning Louis Malle’s Pretty Baby, starring a pre-teen Brooke Shields as a prostitute.

Nothing if not consistent, the censor board demands that 35 seconds of sofa-shaking sex be cut from the Canadian film In Praise of Older Women. Rebel TIFF staffers smuggle the original film reel into the theatre and show the uncut version.

1979

On the rebound from Farrah Fawcett, the Six Million Dollar Man, Lee Majors, arrives at a festival soirée with Karen Kain on his arm, telling reporters, “It’s quite a responsibility going out with Canada’s national treasure, but then I was married to America’s.”

1980

In the days before tweens hogged the limelight, the Divine Miss M. sparks a riot at the premiere of her musical Divine Madness.

1982

At an illegal after-hours club, Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel reportedly snort more coke than Tony Montana on a tear. De Niro then asks festival staffer Michael Copeman to stand guard at the bathroom door while he becomes better acquainted with a new female friend.

Newbie filmmakers Atom Egoyan and Bruce McDonald get two thumbs up for self-promotion: after both are rejected by the festival, they don matching tuxes and gloves to screen their shorts—Open House and Let Me See, respectively—outside the main festival theatre.

1983

The star-stacked Big Chill opens the festival, officially ushering in the era of Holly­wood celebrity that dominates TIFF today.

An unseasoned TIFF volunteer shows up at Glenn Close’s suite and blurts out, “Oh, I thought you were a man!” Close throws a first-class don’t-you-know-who-I am diva fit.

1984

Attempting to get close to Jack Nicholson in the VIP section of TIFF hot spot Copa, reporter Susan Ferrier MacKay holds up a sign reading “Want to dance?” Nicholson mouths back “No, thank you,” then turns to his fellow partier and says, “Pity she used the wrong verb.”

1985

Fourteen-year-old ingenue Margaret Langrick, starring in My American Cousin, works the party circuit with cigarette and wine glass in hand.

1987

Too big for regular theatre seats, pro wrestler turned Princess Bride star André the Giant gets an orange vinyl bench crafted to accommodate his seven-foot-four, 500-pound girth.

1989

Festival employee Don McKellar helps Drugstore Cowboy co-stars Matt Dillon and Kelly Lynch avoid the red carpet crowds by taking them up to the Varsity theatre in a freight elevator, which breaks down, forcing the trio to make awkward chit-chat while waiting for maintenance workers.

Bruce McDonald accepts the $25,000 best Canadian film prize for Roadkill, happily announcing it would buy him “a big chunk of hash.”

Celebs and film fans fight for space at the ROM screening of Michael Moore’s Roger and Me, prompting threats from the fire marshal and the evacuation of standing fans.
