The one thing you should see this week: a peek at the birth of a star

This week’s pick: Mary Pickford and the Invention of the Movie Star.

It all started with a single photograph. Rob Brooks bought his first Mary Pickford memento on the Danforth back in 1980, kick-starting a decades-long obsession with the Girl With the Golden Curls. Now the owner of the world’s largest collection of Pickford memorabilia—nearly 2,000 items—has decided to spread the mania by donating it all to TIFF, which has put 300 of the pieces on display in a fascinating exhibit that opened last Thursday.

Opening soon: a peek inside the Bell Lightbox, TIFF’s new home

The Lightbox lobby. Now picture it filled with celebs (Image: Karon Liu)

With less than two months to the Bell Lightbox’s grand unveiling, we put on our hard hats and rubber boots Friday to see how far TIFF’s new home has come since we last saw it a year ago.

Noah Cowan, the Lightbox’s artistic director and former TIFF co-director, guided us through the main entrance at King and John, where celebrities will walk down a black granite path (it will serve as the red carpet area) with enough space for media lines on either side. CanCon at TIFF: Atom Egoyan’s latest and Heath Ledger’s final film among newly announced titles

Even though it’s just a press conference, the announcement of TIFF’s Canadian lineup is considered to be the unofficial pre-gala kickoff for locals. Homegrown filmmakers, actors and distributors packed into the Royal York’s Imperial Room yesterday to pose for the camera and decimate the open bar and buffet table in a manner befitting this country’s underfunded film industry. Since a British film—Creationwas chosen for opening night, a Canadian project was widely expected to close the festival. Organizers didn’t disappoint. The honour went to The Young Victoria, a look at titular queen’s early years on the throne directed by C.R.A.Z.Y. filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée. Other notable announcements included:

Atom Egoyan’s Chloe, about a wife (Julianne Moore) who hires a PYT (Amanda Seyfried) to catch her husband (Liam Neeson) in the act of cheating;
Reginald Harkema’s follow-up to Monkey WarfareLeslie, My Name Is Evilwill have its world premiere;
Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, the tale of a travelling theatre show staring Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Heath Ledger in his last role. A Canada-U.K. co-production, this one just squeaked into the CanCon category.
