Good Stuff Cheap: three genuine refuges where guys can get their groom on—cheaply

(Image: Lorne Bridgman)

HAIRCUT
Blood and Bandages, $22
This two-chair shop is a dude sanctuary with nary a Vogue to be found (reading material tends to be of The World’s Most Powerful Handguns and Rifles variety). Owner Roger Janes snips lids by moving between clippers and scissors—he’s never done a full clipper cut, saying, “It’s kind of a lazy way to cut hair.” Fellas get inspiration from the wall of old-timey hair-model portraits or just straight-up ask for the Don Draper style that’s ubiquitous these days.

Celebrities—they’re just like us, except they make more money and get more free stuff. An unfair irony, we know. As of today, the TIFF swag season has begun. At the end of the fest, we’ll name the best of the bunch. First up, Tastemakers.

Well manicured: matte polish is the latest nail craze

ko-flatte-black

With the exception of this summer’s liquid-like metallics, nail polish hasn’t changed much since cosmetic companies began adding glitter and quirky colours like orange and blue to their lines. Until now. Matte polishes from Knockout are the newest trend in the mani-pedi world. Applying it, however, requires an extremely steady hand, so skip the home manicure and take a bottle to a professional.

Knockout matte nail polish, $19 at Aritzia, Eaton Centre, 220 Yonge St., 416-204-1318; plus 11 other GTA locations, aritzia.ca.

Well manicured: Jason Culala and Noel Naguiat of Mankind (Photo by Karon Liu)

Wearing pink, shopping for clothes and getting highlights—the male sex has come a long way, but there are still a few milestones to hit, namely, having mani-pedis.

Noel Naguiat, who opened Mankind Grooming Studio for Men on Monday, remembers being laughed at when he went to a strip mall nail salon to have his nails cleaned. “It’s common for men to get manicures and pedicures in Europe and in parts of Asia, but here, a lot of guys feel embarrassed,” says Naguiat. “It shouldn’t be like that.” To create a masculine environment where men can get grooming advice without being gawked at, Naguiat, who is also an art director at an advertising agency, teamed up with his wife’s stylist, Jason Culala, to open Mankind.
