Face forward: the perfect foundation for women who hate wearing foundation

perfektWe don’t often write about cosmetics and skin products on Style, but we’ve been using Per-fékt’s skin perfection gel for years, having smuggled it in from the States until it was made available in Canada a few years ago, and we’re surprised that the product has remained fairly unknown.

It’s essentially a liquid foundation made from an ultra-light silicone formula that evens skin tone and fills in large pores and fine lines with basically no effort—it melts into the skin. For foundation and powder wearers, it can be used as a primer to create a smooth base, but women who prefer a more natural look can use it (in a clear or tinted formula) alone for a glowing mug. Both water and sweat resistant, the gel is fragrance-free and enriched with vitamins A and E.

$65 at Sephora. Eaton Centre, 220 Yonge St., 416-595-7227, sephora.com.

Shoppers Drug Mart will open at Queen and John

urbanplanet

(Photo via Google Street View)

Last week, Urban Planet closed the doors on its massive store at 262 Queen Street West (the same building that once housed Caban), and the latest news is that Shoppers Drug Mart will be taking over the 20,000-square-foot space. The story was reported today in the National Post as the official sign of “long-coming death of Queen Street West bohemia,” though we’d never associate chain clothing store Urban Planet with bohemia.

My Edward Cullen Twilight make-over

twilight1

Norma Hill-Patton works on Style reporter Karon Liu

Even non-Twihards know that associating oneself with the Twilight series is a wise move, so when my editor found out that Norma Hill-Patton, the head makeup artist for New Moon, Catwoman and the last two X-Men movies, would be at the International Make-Up Artist Trade Show at the CNE yesterday, she sent me for an Edward Cullen make-over.

Torontonians score the most honours at the national hairstyling awards

contessa

A style from top Ontario stylist Robert Barbosa (Photo by Justin Borbely)

While most people were gorging themselves on tiny chocolate bars and mini-bags of chips on the weekend, the country’s aesthetic elite were attending their version of the Oscars, the Contessa Awards. Held at the Sheraton, this was the 21st edition of the Contessas, which recognize excellence in hair, makeup and nails.

Though the title hairstylist of the year went to Vancouver’s Chad Taylor, and the award for the top salon went to Glam in Montreal, Torontonians took home the most awards (but, hey, who’s counting?). After the jump, the Toronto winners.

The Oprah effect: The press conference-turned-talk show taping

Oprah27-313x387

Oprah ropes in her fans at the press conference for Precious

“It’s like the president is coming,” said one photographer looking back at the burly security guards at the entrance of the room.

“It’s bigger than that,” replied another. “It’s Oprah.

With our cameras slung over our shoulders, painfully weighed down by the giant lenses and flashes attached to them, 15 or so photographers negotiated spots and angles with each other so we all would have a clear shot at the mighty O behind the table she’d be sitting at for the morning press conference of the movie she co-produced: Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. Murale1

Shoppers Drug Mart's luxe cosmetics and skincare retailer, Murale, is designed to tempt beauty junkies

Score another one for the Shops at Don Mills. The city’s first Murale store, Shoppers Drug Mart Corporation’s answer to Sephora, opened its doors at the centre last week, inviting members of the media for a tour and to try out some of the products. And as anyone who’s stepped inside Shoppers for toothpaste and ended up with a basket full of stuff knows, these people know how draw out dormant shopaholics.

Toronto’s Best Dressed: Kenia Avendano

Black-on-black outfits can easily verge on boring, but this week’s best dressed—spotted on Ossington Avenue—is an exception. Kenia Avendano makes monochromatic interesting by combining trendy accessories with a vintage dress and statement jewellery. We talked to the 29-year-old Ryerson fashion communications student to find out how she stays chic on a budget.

Tell us what you’re wearing.
The dress is from the ’80s—I found it at a Vancouver consignment store called C’est la Vie. The sandals are from eBay, but the shipping cost more than the shoes. The jacket is from H&M, and the tights are from American Apparel. The most expensive thing on me is the ring from Jacflash, which cost $280.

Do you always wear black?
Yes, but I play with texture and silhouettes or add a flash of colour with accessories and makeup. When I wear bright colours, I feel too flashy.

But you’re wearing a lot of trendy pieces—how do you avoid going overboard?
I think mixing trendy pieces with timeless garments is the key. For me, it’s balancing something that’s in now, like the tights, and something I can wear years from now, like the dress.

Are there any looks you’re not into at the moment?
The headband across the forehead is something that needs to go away. I know trends come and go, but it should have gone months ago.

Have any cost-cutting fashion tips?
I’m obsessed with clothing, but I’m a student, so I buy inexpensive items and make them look like a million bucks. It’s something a lot of people have to do right now.

Makeup under $10 that doesn’t suck

lip-stain

Joe Fresh lip stains. From left: peach, candy, sheer pink and watermelon.

It’s easy to believe that the cosmetics industry is recession proof—on Saturdays, Sephora stores are full of women forking out $30 for a tube of Dior mascara or Laura Mercier lip gloss—but we’ve found makeup that doesn’t require a taking out a second mortgage to purchase. Supermarket fashion label Joe Fresh launched a makeup collection last spring, and like its clothing line, the products are incredibly inexpensive (nothing is over $8). We liked all the cosmetics, but the strawberry-scented lip stains stood out. Available in six shades, the stains dry with a matte finish and do not come off on cups. We found that sheer pink gives a natural look, peach and candy provide richer colour, and watermelon and apple are great for more drama (wear them alone or under gloss for additional depth). The best part: they’re $6 each, a price tag that might just be worth switching cosmetics stores for.

Joe Fresh Style. 10 Lower Jarvis St., 416-304-0611, and others, joe.ca.
