One boy’s journey into the world of beauty and glamour: backstage at Greta Constantine spring/summer 2012

A model gets her closeup backstage at Greta Constantine (Image: Jenna Marie Wakani)

TORONTO FASHION WEEK | SEE ALL While the clothes always take center stage (or runway, as it were) at fashion shows, the beauty component is an equally important aspect, helping tie the looks together into the designer’s cohesive vision. We went backstage at Greta Constantine—not only to scope out the half-naked male models—to give you the skinny on how the makeup artists and hair team get the models (normally a haggard bunch) looking catwalk ready. Hair was styled by Hair on the Avenue under the supervision of Colin Ford, director of education at L’Oreal Professionnel. Ford says “the clothes are both structured and unstructured and kind of androgynous,” so he wanted a similar look to the hair. It reminded us of a woman who vacations in St Barts: very sleek on top with a tousled look at the ends. The team achieved this by using L’Oreal’s Mythic Oil, a nutritive oil, on the ends and Lumicontrole, a cream wax, at the roots for shine. Though it took the stylists fifteen minutes to achieve the look, they told us anyone could do it at home in only five (but, of course they’d say that).

Video: how to pull off—or not—365 layers of makeup

There’s always been some debate about how much makeup is too much, and in this video we found, it seems directors Lernert and Sander wanted to push the limits of how much can be pancaked on before a waif model suffers serious skin damage. After nine hours and 365 layers of different kinds of makeup, doesn’t she look, um, amazing? Who doesn’t like looking like their face has melted?

The IIFA Look: 100 bobby pins and half a can of hairspray are just some of the trade secrets

Each high-maintenance head takes at least 45 minutes. (Image: David Pike)

Bollywood would be nothing without its opulent dance sequences featuring lithe performers, sumptuous costumes, immaculate hair and dazzling makeup. Making sure the hair and makeup withstands the hot show lights, acrobatic dance moves and sweaty skin takes a lot of effort, and it’s especially important when 22,000 people are watching live and another 700 million are tuning in on TV, as was the case with the International Indian Film Academy Awards this past weekend at the Rogers Centre.

For the ceremony, over 50 stylists from both MAC cosmetics and Marc Anthony were on hand to prepare the 130 or so dancers entertaining during the night. In fact, even bold-faced names like Hilary Swank, Shilpa Shetty, Bobby Deol and Irrfan Khan sat for 45 minutes or so to get their green carpet looks in order. Some of their tricks?  For sweaty skin, the MAC team used mulmul, delicate muslin brought in from India, to dry the dancers’ faces off between routines. For the hair, up to 100 bobby pins and half a can of hairspray were used per head to make sure each strand stayed in place.  Check out our backstage look at the performers getting ready for the show after the jump.

The swag series: RealTV is one of TIFF’s best lounges

Serious bling at the RealTV lounge (Image: Fraser Abe)

What it is: RealTV Films’ Social Media Lounge (vying for the longest gifting-lounge title this TIFF) has partnered with Chic Little Devil, an L.A.-based style boutique, to offer celebs swag, make-overs, food and booze. Many of the products aren’t to give away but to showcase; and the space offers film people a place to hang out and decompress near the TIFF epicentre, the  Bell Lightbox.

Who goes: TIFF hot commodities Emily Hampshire (who wore an Herve Leger-style dress from Chic Little Devil to the Alliance Films Party) and Katie Boland, Tara Spencer-Nairn of Corner Gas, and Playboy Bunny Bridget Marquardt have all stopped in. Guests expected this week are Megan Fox, Jamie Kennedy and Keshia Chanté.

Condo space Pears on the Avenue at Av and Dav has been taken over by Toro magazine to host a series of events for TIFF, the first of which was last night’s Caitlin Cronenberg–curated exhibit. Red: Canada Through the Lens of the New York Times. The party was full of the homegrown celebs we’ve come to expect at these events: Spencer Rice of Kenny vs. Spenny, proud papa David Cronenberg, Little Mosque on the Prairie star Debra McGrath and her husband Colin Mochrie, with whom Caitlin shares a love of Ann-Margret.

The swag series: celebs get Joe Fresh make-overs at the Tastemakers Lounge

Celebrities—they’re just like us, except they make more money and get more free stuff. An unfair irony, we know. As of today, the TIFF swag season has begun. Loaded with jewellery, clothing, makeup, accessories and games, gifting suites are the places where companies can reap mega-exposure if a celebrity picks up their goodies. This year, there are more lounges than ever, and we’ve been snooping around to report back on what they’re offering and what celebs have been stocking up on. At the end of the fest, we’ll name the best of the bunch. First up, Tastemakers.

Stephen Harper won’t divulge his stylist’s salary

Despite appearances, Stephen Harper has his very own Rachel Zoe, a personal stylist to attend to his makeup, hair and clothing needs. Debates over MP expenses turned up the information that Michelle Muntean, Harper’s grooming guru, is now paid by the Conservative Party, but her salary and travel expenses are being kept secret. Her pay, which used to come from taxpayers, has people up in arms over knowing how much was coming from the tax coffers to keep Harper looking so darned spiffy. Muntean’s official tasks are mundane, like picking out suits and ties and co-ordinating hair and makeup, but we prefer to think of her as Canada’s answer to Lisa Kline.

Why are there no female sushi chefs? Blame warm hands and menstruation

Yet another man making sushi (Image: rick)

According to the Star, there are only three female sushi chefs in Toronto because of a series of age-old beliefs about how the Japanese culinary art must be executed:

Women’s hands are too warm to handle raw fish or sushi rice. Their perfume, makeup and lotions interfere with the food. Hormonal fluctuations wreak havoc on delicate Japanese food.

Marketers (and girlfriends, wives and mothers) push for more men’s beauty products

Manly packaging from Toronto's Bread and Butter

According to a recent Globe article, more and more young men are taking their style cues from primped-to-the-nines man-gods like David Beckham, even if it means sporting such cosmetics as “guyliners” and “power bronzes.” The only problem is that due to a combination of general cheapness and a fear of being spotted in public buying flowery-looking jars of beauty cream, many men continue to shop for their products where they feel most comfortable: in their wives’ and girlfriends’ makeup kits. This, to the likely horror and annoyance of women everywhere.

Lindsay Lohan as Jesus, Abercrombie store scares Japanese shoppers, Tavi talks back

Lilo's Purple cover

Armani Exchange’s Share the Love Valentine’s Day campaign, which features steamy photos of same-sex couples, has angered the American Family Association, which expressed its displeasure on its Web site onemillionmoms.com. The organization, which aims to rid society of “filth,” calls the ads “poison” to children and urges other parents to “take a stand since A|X is one of the fashion leaders and this is becoming a popular trend.” We’re outraged—Armani Exchange is not a fashion leader. [The Cut]

• Controversial teen fashion blogger and Jeanne Beker stand-in Tavi Gevinson responded to the recent criticisms that have been levelled at her, her big hats and her parents. The gist? Bring it. “I’m going to New York on Saturday. I will be wearing some more hats. If you happen to be sitting behind me and you’d like to be able to see, just ask.” Let’s hope the Fashion Television cameras are rolling. [Style Rookie]

905 faces off against the 416 in fashion battle

Memo to 416ers: the 905 is not like the Jersey Shore (Photo via MTV)

They walk among us to learn our language and customs. They could even be in the next cubicle. They’re everywhere, and nothing can be done about it. That’s right; despite our best efforts, 905ers are infiltrating the city’s chicest restaurants and clubs unbeknownst to downtowners, writes Kim Izzo in her latest column for the Star, which chronicles her move from downtown to uptown.

Since November, Izzo has been documenting the pains of moving north as if she’s dealing with a terminal illness or moving to the other side of the world (Richmond Hill, to be exact). Now that she’s fully integrated into suburban society, she feels that 905ers get a bad rap from their downtown counterparts, who think people living north of Bloor have big hair, fake tans and souped-up cars. (When did Markham become Jersey Shore?)
