Introducing: La Société, Bloor Street’s massive new bistro and people-watching hub

The bar at La Société (Image: Gizelle Lau)

La Société, Charles Khabouth and Danny Soberano’s new upscale bistro, opened last week to just the chic red-carpet reception one would expect, with guests like “jersey boys” Kirk Pickersgill and Stephen Wong of Greta Constantine, media mogul Moses Znaimer, Canadian musician music manager and producer Jake Gold and Food Network Canada host Kevin Brauch (no RPattz sighting, though). We first scoped out the dining room’s impressive stained-glass ceiling shortly after it was installed, and returned last week to see how everything turned out.

Two foodie fundraisers set to benefit the Toronto Wildlife Centre this month

There’s a reason food and fundraisers go hand in hand: what better way to encourage patrons and sponsors to empty their wallets for a good cause than to fill their bellies with delicious food? (See: this weekend’s Toronto Taste.) This month, the Toronto Wildlife Centre—the only organization in the GTA that rescues and provides treatment for wildlife in need—will be on the receiving end of two such events.

Canada gets its own Top Chef; wild speculation ensues

News came over the wire today that Canwest is producing a Canadian version of Top Chef that will air on the Food Network next spring, but few details about the show (casting, filming dates, judges, etc.) have been released yet. All we know is that the network has posted a video asking fans to pitch them challenge ideas (read: we’re exploiting Internet users as free labour).

The Weekender: Canadian Music Week, early St. Paddy’s at the Ceili Cottage and six other things to do this weekend

1. ST. PATRICK’S WEEK
This year, St. Paddy’s Day falls on a Wednesday, which is no deterrent to proud Irish (and Irish-for-a-day) folk but makes celebrating a little difficult for the rest of us. Enter the Ceili Cottage, which has organized a week’s worth of events so no one has to miss out. This Saturday’s St. Practice Day festivities will include Irish dance performances and cocktails mixed by Thirsty Traveller and Iron Chef America reporter Kevin Brauch. Head back on Sunday afternoon after the leprechaun- and clover-heavy parade for more Guinness and dance lessons. March 13 to 17. Prices vary. The Ceili Cottage, 1301 Queen St. E., 416-406-1301, ceilicottage.com.

Toronto knock-off of Iron Chef will pit Jamie Kennedy against Ted Corrado

The second annual Stop for Food festival is pretty much a rip-off of Winterlicious and Iron Chef, but since it’s for charity, we’ll let it slide. To kick off the month-long prix fixe fête in 19 restaurants, a cook-off will be held on February 22 at the ROM’s C5, where attendees will see Jamie Kennedy (Gilead Bistro), Anthony Davis (Roosevelt Room) and Jason Inniss (Amuse-Bouche) compete against Luis Valenzuela (Torito), Chris Brown (The Stop) and Ted Corrado (of C5, which means he has a home stove advantage). Thirsty traveller Kevin Brauch will be hosting the culinary clash, but no word yet on whether there will be a secret ingredient or a yellow pepper–eating chairman. The event is sold out, but with proceeds going to the Stop Community Food Centre, that’s a good thing. Organizers are presently taking names for the waiting list.

Tyler Cunningham and Frank Romano go spatula to spatula in Liberty Village booze-off

Mildred’s Temple Kitchen is staging a battle (Crown) royal tomorrow. House chef Tyler Cunningham and Frank Romano (of Far Niente) will face off in an Iron Chef–style cook-off to launch the LCBO’s What’s Your Whisky Festival. The chefs will compete during the preparation of four rye-soaked courses, each based on a Canadian brand of booze, to prove that whisky is—wait for it—the next, next red wine.

Just Opened: Ceili Cottage

Irish times: Patrons live it up at Leslieville's Ceili Cottage (Photo by Signe Langford)

Irish times: Patrons live it up at Leslieville's Ceili Cottage (Photos by Signe Langford)

“We did this totally back-asswards,” says Patrick McMurray of Ceili Cottage, the Irish pub he opened in Leslieville, and the series of snafus that kept its doors closed until the end of June.

The last snag was the threat of an LCBO strike, which was scheduled to begin the same day McMurray planned to serve his first drinks. He sent his wife and a friend to the liquor store to fill four carts before he officially received his licensee number. As he tells it, the carts of booze were just approaching the cash at the same moment as his license was confirmed. The kegs of beer had yet to be delivered, but Leslievillians—having developed quite a thirst after months of watching the glacial progress on their new local—were pounding on the cottage’s red door, demanding refreshments. McMurray opened without kegs, serving cans of Guinness and bottles of Harp from a nearby Beer Store.
