TIFF PHOTO GALLERY: Neil Young, Eddie Vedder and Daniel Lanois at the red carpet gala for Neil Young Journeys

With his majestic sideburns on full display, Neil Young moseyed down the red carpet at the Princess of Wales Theatre yesterday for his film Neil Young Journeys. Director Jonathan Demme stuck close by and we’re gonna wager a guess that, like the rest of us, Demme is totally crushing on Young at this point. Journeys is Demme’s third doc on the artist, covering Young’s Massey Hall concert this past May and interspersed with scenes from a nostalgic road trip through Ontario. Other attendees included Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, manager Elliot Roberts and fellow Canadian music royalty Daniel Lanois, who produced the album Le Noise, which features in the film. See our photo gallery, after the jump.

TIFF announces this year’s Mavericks program

TIFF announced its full programming schedule today, which means its time to start planning individual movie lineups. It also means a few more big names have been added to the festival through TIFF’s Mavericks program, which brings out celebrities and newsmakers to discuss their latest projects. Last year may have had Bruce Springsteen and Bill Gates, but this year’s slate is equally impressive: Christopher Plummer, Tilda Swinton, Neil Young, Deepa Mehta, Salman Rushdie, Jonathan Demme, Maldives president Mohamed Nasheed, Francis Ford Coppola and Sony Pictures Classics founders Michael Barker and Tom Bernard will be making presentations. The program also includes the world premieres of Barrymore, The Love We Can Make, Neil Young Life and The Island President, and the North American premiere of Tahrir 2011: The Good, the Bad and the Politician.

Check out more details about the Maverick program after the jump.

Jonathan Demme to host art exhibit at Gladstone Hotel during TIFF

The westward movement of TIFF action this year continues with Jonathan Demme’s prized collection of Haitian and Jamaican art on display at the Gladstone Hotel from September 7 to 16. The director (Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, Rachel Getting Married) has a soft spot for Haiti. In the 1980s, he purchased a painting by a Haitian artist at a New York gallery, visited the island several times, made friends, learned Creole and later shot a documentary about Haitian journalist and activist Jean Dominique. The film, 2003′s The Agronomist, will be screened at the Gladstone on September 12 at 2 p.m., with all proceeds from ticket sales ($20 each) going to the Haiti relief fund.

So much for a heart of gold: Neil Young cancels his free TIFF appearance

neil

Tell us why, Neil

In a move sure to have fans pleading “tell me why,” Neil Young has cancelled his much-hyped public appearance at the film festival. The legendary rocker was set to appear at Yonge–Dundas Square on Monday for a public screening of Neil Young Trunk Show, Jonathan Demme’s new concert film about Young.

Details of Young’s appearance were sketchy, but there was no shortage of hopeful rumours (too hopeful, it seems)— spawned in part by a Toronto Star photo caption on August 20, and reported by outlets like Rolling Stone—that he was to give a free concert.

Thank you, recession: this year’s free TIFF events are surprisingly wonderful

Synonymous with velvet ropes, lavish parties and celebrities whose annual income rivals the GDP of Palau, the Toronto International Film Festival has never been a particularly thrifty affair—until now. TIFF is getting recession friendly in ’09 by offering expanded free programming at Yonge-Dundas Square (the kind that so irked Rex Reed last year), not to mention some A-list celebrity appearances. “It’s been a tough year for everyone, so everyone deserves a bit of a break,” says festival managing director Michele Maheux. And judging by the press release, it’s good to see they’re not phoning it in with the freebies: planned events include appearances by Neil Young, George A. Romero, Joan Baez, Sapphire and many more. The full list, after the jump.
